“Friendliness abounds in this cosy inn in a delightful Rutland market town.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2011

I stayed at the Crown Inn in Uppingham for two nights in August 2011 over a weekend, a convenient location for my visit to the Birdfair 2011 at Rutland Water. In view of the fact that it was difficult to find accommodation in Rutland at this very busy time I consider myself most fortunate in finding a room at The Crown, the jewel in the Rutland crown!

Alan Pickersgill and his staff went out of their way to make my stay one of sheer delight. The room I had was on the small side but suitable enough for a solo traveller, and spotlessly clean. My room had en suite facilities with a nice range of free toiletries. The doors to the shower cubicle could have opened a bit wider though!

If you like your real ale this is the place for you! Alan serves a range of Everards ales (Leicester brewery) including the award winning Tiger ale and usually has a guest beer or two. The bar is busy, well appointed and full of friendly Rutlanders! Might be something to do with the fact that The Crown is CAMRA's Rutland Pub of the Year!

The room rate includes a delicious full English breakfast and the dinner menu is a real treat. All dishes are prepared and cooked by the resident chef who specialises with his pies. Try the chicken, sun dried tomato and chorizo pie with puff pastry topping. Oh boy, absolutely delicious; served with new potatoes, broccoli and carrots and a snip at £8.50, accompanied by a 250ml glass of Shiraz for just £3.00.

My only regret is that I couldn't stay longer! I unreservedly recommend this hostelry to anyone.

Room Tip: The rooms on the second floor are quieter, being more distant from the bar...

We stayed for one night in September before heading off for two weeks camping. This hotel is in such a great location in the pretty village of Uppingham. The service was really good - were very friendly and helpful. The bathroom was clean and relatively new and the room had some great original features like a cast iron fireplace and sash window. However, the bed was quite honestly the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in:the blow-up mattress we spent the next two weeks on was amillion times better. You could feel every single spring digging in all night. It was such a shame that such a relatively inexpensive thing to sort let this otherwise lovely old pub/b&b down. Can't comment on the food as we ate at Don Paddy's on the square which was VERY good food - can't recommend enough.

The landord and his staff were first class, very warm and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble, this coupled with a fantastic menu of locally sourced foods and real ales made for a superb overall stay, i felt very welcome in the bar area with locals easy to talk with. the room i had was faultless and had immaculate cleanliness. i have stayed at many pubs over the years offering accomadation and have to say this was one of the best and excellent value for money
