There are not enough nice things to say about Hotel Sainte-Helene and its owners. It took Mark and Kay over a year to renovate the building, and they did an excellent job. The rooms are very tastefully decorated with lovely antiques and extra thoughts given to their guests' needs. A kettle for boiling water, various teas, coffee, and cookies are in each room. The modern bathroom with huge shower is luxurious as are the towels and linens. A small refrigerator in the breakfast room filled with water, sodas, and milk is on the honor system, as well as bottles of wine. The breakfast with any type of coffee you might want and tea, etc., is wonderful – fresh breads, pastries, fruit, yogurt, and cereal. There is a small, inviting courtyard as you enter Sainte-Helene, which is a lovely spot for a glass of wine in the late afternoon. The wi-fi worked great throughout the house. In the parlor, there is a TV and DVD player, movies and books – although I don't know why you would need to use them unless it is raining.
Mark and Kay are gracious hosts and do their best to fulfill any request made by their guests and even chauffeured us to a restaurant on our last night. Although not natives, it is obvious that Mark and Kay love the area. Their excitement when telling of the various attractions is contagious and their advice on what to see and arranging our day was spot on. Mark spent a lot of time and effort to make sure we had correct directions to our destinations. They have a wonderful cat, Monsieur Gabby, but if you are not a cat person, don't worry. You may not even know he is there.
Olonzac is a cute town in a central location for touring the Languedoc region. We had 3 of our best meals during our 2 weeks in France at restaurants in the area – one being at Bel in Olonzac itself and two in Homps, which in on the Canal du Midi and about a 5 minute drive from Olonzac. We do hope to return to the area one day, and Sainte-Helene will be where we stay. As we drove away, we felt as if we were leaving good friends. Thank you Mark and Kay for making our stay so pleasant.
