This is a small museum and it has it all on Matisse. If you are enthusiastic about art you really should visit this museum and maybe skip some of the more famous ones. This museum has a very interesting collection and it is presented neatly. Visit also the historical city on the same trip!

A very nice day trip from Brussels, this is a nice little town with good Ch'ti food that you might not bother to visit if it weren't for this charming little museum in a former episcopal palace. We saw a very nice show of Eastern European post-impressionists as well as the permanent exhibition, then crossed the street for steak with maroilles - a nice day!

A fascinating mix of works, not just of Matisse, but by several other artists of the period. The perfect way to follow our Sunday lunch in the Brasserie de l'Abbaye in Le Cateau, and on the first Sunday of each month, admission is free. A pleasant little park at the rear made for a very relaxing afternoon.

An easy drive from Lille or Lens-- add this to your Northern France art tour. We went to the Louvre Lens in the morning (reserve ahead to eat lunch there), went to this lovely museum for 2 hours in the afternoon, and stayed in Avesnes at Les Mout'anes) that night. It was kind of a perfect day. This is a small collection, but excellently displayed. There are some really unusual early and late Matisse paintings here. There are also some great exhibitions of his contemporary French modernists.
