This was my third time staying at Horsley lodge and the first time since all the rooms have been refitted to a luxurious standard right down to soft close toilet seats! However the highlight of the stay was the newly re-vamped Highlander Restaurant, with scallops to die for and lamb which fell off the bone coupled with fantastic service. This is high class dining at pub prices. in a word - outstanding!

Thank you for the good review, as you are a business guest from Dorset, we rely on getting it right so that you will choose us again over other places that may be more convenient to the main roads, but we hope if we go the extra mile so will you, Horsley Lodge is just off the Main A38 less than 15 minutes from the M1, but to open the curtains and see one of Derbyshire's nicest views has got to be a bonus.

My husband and I got married at Horsley Lodge in October 2011 and it was everything we had hoped for and more.

The setting is beautiful and we even managed to get gorgeous sunny weather which means our photos are amazing and we managed to make good use of the new patio area outside the conference suite.

The staff at Horsley are great and very friendly. We were on first-name terms with all of them by the end of the day. Jo is the greatest wedding planner and was there all day with us! The DJ was also great, we'd given him a list of songs to play and he managed to play them all as well as others to keep the atmosphere going.

The accommodation at Horsley really is more 5-star than 3-star. They've recently refurbished all the rooms and they're all just beautiful. We stayed in the Honeymoon suite on Saturday which is on a floor by itself and the 4-poster bed just topped our day.

We also stayed in The Barn the day after our wedding. This room is stunning, the bed is huge (take a step-ladder with you to get on it) and the jacuzzi is amazing. Unfortunately, we had to leave really early in the morning to go on our honeymoon but have pledged to go back and stay at The Barn for longer.

Horsley Lodge has always been a favourite with our family but now its definitely the best venue for us in Derbyshire!

What a transformation! We have been to Horsley Lodge several times before and have had some dissapointing experiences, However, after dining in the Highlander restaurant this evening I can honestly say the new menu, service and image is certainly going to leave a few other high class restaurants in the area quaking in their boots! It's quite amazing that a restaurant can transform in such a short space of time. The new menu was exciting and the food delicious, the staff seemed to be proud of their new surroundings and were just as friendly and attentive as always! We will be recommending this restaurant to our friends and look forward to returning. Thank you for a wonderful evening!

Wow, thankyou, we were at the "Restaurant of the year" awards when you came as the new style of menu and service went live on Nov 1st, so its congratulations to my new General Manager, Luke Gregory, who joined us from Hoar Cross Hall Spa, for getting it transformed so well and so quickly. There was a lot of work done behind the scenes, but our wonderful staff have stepped up to the mark brilliantly and look forward to serving you again soon.

We came for a family wedding and stayed two nights - the night before by ourselves, and the night of the wedding reception.

The overwhelming impression we took away was of staff who genuinely put themselves out to make sure you're happy and comfortable. An example is a downside of the hotel: August is not in its heating season. Even I, as a fairly hardy male, shivered a bit as we went into the room (Mitford - the upside is glorious views over the golf course and countryside; the downside is it has two outside walls). But within 5 minutes staff had brought an oil-filled radiator which very satisfactorily warmed the rooms and the walls up. It was instances like that over nearly two days that made you feel very welcome.

The room was comfortable and well-decorated and we had two good nights' sleep. Two little warnings: Mitford is above the bar and the loudspeakers for the piped music couple directly into the floorboards, and of course you don't get the full melody, just the bass notes. Again, the staff know the problem and will turn the music off. And the towel rail is on the central heating circuit, so if there's no heating, there's no warm towel rail.

We ate in the dining room on the first night, as a threesome. A very pleasant room, pretty good service, and the food was very good. The hotel (it only has about 8 rooms) benefits from being the club house for the golf course. This means it has a high food turnover, so can freshly prepare meals rather than get them out of the freezer. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt relaxed. We'd be quite happy to call in for a meal if we were in the area.

Despite it being the club house you don't feel overwhelmed by golfers: somehow or another the logistics are organised so hotel guests and golfers don't get mixed up. You certainly don't feel like second class citizens. And I think the golfers recognise that hotel guests must cross-subsidise their costs. Mostly we had smiles and cheery hello's - apart from one group of miserable lady golfers who seemed to regard the area as their private fiefdom. Still, it takes all sorts......

So, we would have no hesitation in staying again if current standards are maintained.

Room Tip: Pay £10 extra to get a front room with a view.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. I'm sure it helps other travellers to get such a good insight. You saw all sides by attending a wedding and then staying an extra night to appreciate the restaurant as well. We look forward to your return as we aim to not only maintain but improve all of what we do here.

We stayed at this hotel as we were attending a wedding at the same venue.

The Hotel Overall: 5/5 Very relaxed environment. Peaceful. Lovely decor.

The Room: 5/5 The rooms here a fantastic. We were able to see a few of them as we knew other guests staying in many of the rooms and I can say that each room was equally as fantastic as our own. The decoration and furrnishings are lovely and the bathroom has a very luxurious feel to it. We stayed in the 'Tudor' which was one of the rooms overlooking the golf course - this was perhaps the only advantage over the other rooms as the views were fantastic. This room is also at the end of the hotel away from any noise. We also got to see the seperate barn accomodation which is fantastic if you want to spend that little extra - it is set on three floor and is very luxurious.

The staff: 4/5 all very friendly and helpful. We felt like one of the staff members was a little 'off' on arrival when we asked if our room was ready yet (as we were there 20 mins before the check-in time), we were happy to wait but another staff member did report that the room was vacant and had been cleaned so we could check in early. All of the bar staff were very nice!

The food: 5/5 We can only comment fairly on the breakfast as our lunch and dinner was part of the wedding package so may be a little different to eating in the restaurant. The breakfast was very nice. We had a full english breakfast which was cooked beautifully. You can also have cerial/toast and tea/coffee or juice - all of which are self-service and replenished regularly. The restaurant overlooks the beautiful views of the golf course.

Overall we had a very nice stay here and would not hesitate to stay here again should we wish to visit this area again. I would definitely reccommend Horsley Lodge to a friend.

Room Tip: One over-looking the golf course - pref the TUDOR

Horsley Lodge staff pulled out all the stops for the passing of a member. The staff and directors all pulled together to make this an easier day for family and friends. There were at least twice as many people as expected, and the whole of the staff worked really hard and kept the food and drinks (hot & cold) coming to ensure things went smoothly. Thank you all for your hard work
