I have been working in the East Midlands since November 2010 and during that period I have been staying at Holden House 3 or 4 nights a week. I would not hesitate to recommend this lovely B & B. If I am working in the area again will be staying at Holden House. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the breakfast is superb and Angie and Barrie's welcome is always warm.

We stayed for four days while visiting family nearby for a celebration. The rooms are very comfortable and clean and ours had a wonderful view over the river Trent. There are lovely walks nearby along the canal and it is well situated for exploring attractions in the area. Combine this with the friendly atmosphere and super breakfast and we would have no hesitation in recommending a stay here. We will certainly return again. Many thanks Angie.

have just had my third stay at holden house and would like to say that anyone looking for accommodation in the area will not find anywhere as nice as holden house, angela who along with her father run the b&b make you so welcome with nothing too much trouble, the house is in a great location in shardlow with lots of nice pubs and a couple of restaurants within walking distance and looks out onto the river trent and the trent and mersey canal,it really is a lovely location,on top of that the en suite bedrooms are very clean and comfortable and the full english breakfast is great, you really do get a home from home atmosphere which comes from angela and her father barry

Each time we visit family in the midlands we stay at Holden House. It is a nice central place situated in Shardlow. Angie the owner is a very homely and loving character... just like a sister... she makes you feel right at home. The rooms are cozy and clean... all en suite... with tv's, tea & coffee making facilities (and nice chocolate/biscuit), wardrobe and comfy & firm beds. Breakfast is a real treat... full breakfast, in-between or continental... the choice is yours.... and if you're lucky when you arrive in the afternoon, you'll be offered a cup of tea or coffee with one of Angie's home baked cakes... Thankyou Angie for your care... we'll definately be back... Nearly forgot to mention Barry... Angie's dad who is full of local information if you need to tour the area...

Room Tip: All the rooms are very good...

Our stay at Holden House was booked for us by Three Rivers Angling Adventures. The purpose of our stay was so that my husband, a keen angler, could fullfil his long held ambition of catching Barbel. I organised the trip way back in December 2011 as a Christmas present. (Please see my review of the angling experience once TA have checked out the authenticity of my review and Three Rivers are not yet listed on the site).

Built in the mid 1700's Holden House is a listed building with many original features. Landlady Angela Sheard is extremely proud of her business and many of her residents are returning customers. The full English breakfast, plentiful supply of cereals, toast and preserves would set up any angler for his day of fishing on the Trent, Derwent or Dove. Our room was "snug" housing both a double and single bed, double wardrobe, bedside three drawer chest, rustic chair and small table housing the tea and coffee making facilities, with a small flat screen tv on the wall above. En Suite facilities were a walk in shower, saniflow toilet and wash hand basin. Despite the lack of space the room was perfectly adequate for our needs. There was a plentiful supply of good quality towels, bed linen was clean and fresh and the decor plain but fresh and clean. Despite a little bit of flaking pain on the ceiling in the en suite (to be expected in a a house of this age) everything was clean and polished to a high standard. Shower water pressure was a bit low

We were fortunate that after so many weeks of torrential rain and flooding in the area we arrived in bright, hot sunshine and the jewel in Holden's Crown is its position on the banks of the River Trent. After a long walk along the canal banks and dinner in one of the many local pubs/restaurants it was a real treat to sit on the comfy swing chair in the balmy warmth of a perfect summer's evening observing the wildlife on the river. Only days before the water level had risen 8 inches above the bank, flooding the very area where we were enjoying the peaceful and relaxing evening.

Holden House is ideally situated for anglers, walkers and cyclists wanting to fish or explore the area. The Canal Side walks are a fascinating look at a relaxed and quieter pace of life. There are plenty of interesting places to explore but as we were only there for two days - primarlily to catch what is, apparantly, a prince among fish - our exploration of the area was minimal.

Angela is a friendly and laid back landlady, happy to chat or leave you in peace if you need. Struggling to recover from a complicated leg fracture she still manages to cook a great breakfast - fried eggs served exactly as you like them - everything fresh, hot and cooked to order.

Holden House doesn't deliver five star luxury - but what it does deliver is a clean, comfy, relaxed, friendly, ideal resting place that we would happily return to.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front face a busy road .
