The hotel is an interesting blend of old and new, with the castle housing the reception and restaurant, and the barn has been converted into a meeting or training center. My room was in the newest building, the Academy, and it was typical of a boutique hotel with modern furnishings.
The grounds are beautiful and I could imagine its grandeur as a gentile family home a century ago. The main building is beautifully preserved and has a delightful salon for breakfast with a view.
However, steeped in history as it is, there was no attempt to explain its heritage to the guests. Indeed, there was almost no interaction between the hotel staff and the guests except the wait staff, and even then it was minimal. Meals and drinks were just laid out at the appointed time during my short time there. Viewed positively, we can say that the service was non-intrusive but having stayed in many hotels, it did strike me as odd to have such little contact with the hotel.
