Star guesthouse is a disappointment. I decided to stay in a VP guest house which is across the road from the star guesthouse. VP guesthouse is brand new. With wifi, flats screen tv, satellite, hot water, room with a fan cost 10$ (Negotiable:)

To be honest, didn't end up staying here. Several reasons. First, got taken there despite having already said to the tout and the minivan driver I had plans to stay somwhere else (the surest way to guarantee I WON"T stay somewhere). And seeing it just from the outside wasn't exactly enticing, what a real estate agent might describe as "having potential", ie. worn and neglected. Found out from the guesthouse where I eventually ended up, that it's now being operated more as a Khmer hotel, rather than catering for travellers. Lots of Khmer karaoke and rooms rented by the hour. Looked like that too.
Might have once been a good option for backpackers and independent travellers, but this doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Having spoken to people who HAVE stayed there, I'm probably being generous giving this place 2 stars. My advice is try anywhere else. There are plenty of other places in Banlung to suit all kinds of tastes and budgets.

Me and my brother stayed here for just one night while riding dirt bikes around the country. The room was cheap, so I shoudnt really complain, but the bed and pillow was like a brick, and when my brother found the wrapper of a comdom next to his bed, it pretty much summed it up. I have nothing bad to say about the staff though, they where a nice group.

Room Tip: We stayed on the bottom floor so maybe its nicer upstairs

The hotel is off the main strip on a quiet and pleasant street. Rooms are cheap, spacious, come with a TV and big, comfortable beds, but they're not particularly clean; lots of dust and red dirt. However, for the price, it's still a good deal.

The restaurant serves reasonable food but nothing spectacular.

I agree that the people here are scammers. We paid $8 for a motorbike trip around some villages and all the sites, but we were deserted a number of times throughout the trip while our guides mucked around. Not that I'm bemoaning the loss of 8 bucks, but I would never book tours through them.

The Lonely Planet recommends this place saying it's run by the knowledgeable & reliable Mr. Leng. Sure enough, when you call, whoever answers the call identifies himself as 'Mr Leng'. But when we got there, the place seemed to be run by a bunch of kids. Their 'boss' identified himself as Mr Leng's nephew, then changed that to his son later in the evening...

If you are just looking for a place to stay, this place is cheap (though not cheaper then other hotels in Ban Lung of the same standard) and rooms are spacious. But DO NOT rely on them to book tours. They will do anything, ANYTHING to sell you their tour even though they know it's not what you want.

We arranged for a trek in the Virachay National Park and the next day I started to get suspicious when the motos dropped us far too distant from the park. But our guide, aka Mr Leng's nephew/son, swore we were going to Virachay and promised to show me the entry gate.

During the long trek, I grew even more suspicious: either the Cambodian jungle looks like a slightly neglected version of London's Hyde Park, or something was wrong. He finally showed me the 'entrance' to the park: a stone with some Cambodian writing on it. Just next to a bunch of huts, i.e. a village. We had obviously been cheated and I got really pissed off at him, this time not asking, but telling him I knew it was a scam. He admitted to having taken us for a trek in the nearby countryside, not thinking Virachay was really THAT important to us, was sorry, hoped we would keep this silent , etc...

Well, this is the story and you can make what you want of it...
