Fort Nalagarh - A Heritage Resort

Reviewed 29 June 2012

I have stayed here earlier (about 8 years ago). We came in for a conference today with the office group. The first impression was that the proprty was not very well maintained. We were in a conference romm all day where the air conditioners were underpowered and everyone was very unconfortable throughout the day. The food was average at best - nothing to write home about. We ended the day with a drink at the bar, which I guess was ok. Since I stayed here quite sometime ago, I came with fairly high expectations. I have stayed at other heritage properties in India, but this was clearly below par.

OK, I've been a bit lazy and taken a while to write this review, but in all fairness it's taken some time to get over the fantastic experience of our trip to India and the wonderful stay at Nalaghar Fort last October.

Although now a natralised british citizen, my wife is Himachali by birth and although legaly married in the UK, we had never expreinced a true Hindu wedding. With the help of her family in India and because her brother lives in Nalagarh, we decided that Nalagarh Fort would be an ideal venue to hold the Hindu wedding ceremony and give us a chance to renew our vows.

We contacted the hotel general manager, his name is Sumit, who helped to arrange every detail including the mendhi ceremony for the ladies, a Himachali folk night before the wedding day and all the wedding day paraphernalia required to make the day perfect for us and our guests.

The food was excellent, the rooms were great, very atmospheric, some with spectacular views across Nalagarh. And of course all staff couldn't do enough to ensure our every need was attended to. I was worried how my 95 year old mother would manage but I needn't have, she was treated as the star of the show and looked after by all the staff.

Drinks by the pool on the days following the wedding and a cooling dip helped to round off our few days there before we moved on to Shimla. Nalagarh Fort is only an hour or so off the normal tourist routes but well worth the detour if you have time to spend a few days there.

All the rooms are clean and comfortable with on suite facilities, one room in particular has a bathroom with a huge picture window where you can shower whilst enjoying panoramic views over Nalagarh. A cosy bar overooking the pool is the place to round off the day amongst pleasant company. Would we go again? You bet, we can't wait, although next time it will be just the two of us.

Mick and Deepa, Leicester, UK

Room Tip: All the rooms are great but, for a room with a great view ask for an upper room overlooking Nalaghar

En-route to Delhi after a tiring tour from Manali as a stop over we booked this marvel just for one night. We reached in the after noon and been offered with a nice room. Remembering the European style rooms with fire place for winter. For the first time i was experiencing such a room in real.

The courtesy of the staff, The taste of the food, they way it has been served was worth mentioning. There is no big menu to be offered. It was kind of feel like home concept. Tasty good food.

Lot of recreational activities included, Badminton, Swimming pool, spa, Tennis court and lot more. Lush green lawns, gardens and they had names for each rooms too !!!

The way the entire place is conceived into a resort is worth mentioning. The sunset at the fort is a eye catching scene as well.

It was surely the best experience in the entire 8 days tour.

Cheers to the staff and the management !!!

Room Tip: any room is a good room

We had visited this property in year 1998, it had a very few rooms available. Now, in year 2012, 14 years later this property has quite a few rooms (over 35). This property gives a very good view of the small town Nalagarh, which is located in the foothills of Himalayas in Himanchal Pradesh.

This is heritage property and managed by the owners themselves. The staff is very friendly and self-motivated. There are a few things no one can teach in the hospitality industry is to be helpful. The staff here is extremely helpful and they go an extra mile to helpful. For example, someone offered to wash my car. They provided a "carom Board" and Chess in our room. They were ever so helpful!
Resort has small dining area. The lunch and dinner was in our package. We liked lunch better than the dinner. Probably, because dinner was bit too spicy and not to our taste. Breakfast was very basic, but was alright.

They have a bar too, which I did not have a chance to use.

Cleanliness: Since the resort is in foothills, it has lots of dust. Although owners have taken care to provide best of amenities and service, the cleaning of floors (of room) and general cleaning needs a little more focus. Walking in your room bare feet will make your feet very dirty!

The washroom is of the size of most hotel rooms in 5 star hotels of Hongkong. Though, it could have been made more perfect. The towels need recycling too!

This place could be very hot in summers. An ideal place to stop if you are driving from Delhi to Manali. Do take the Delhi-Zirakpur-Pinjore-Nalagarh route. The other route (recommended by GPS) is not good.

Overall a good experience!

Room Tip: Suites and rooms are good. Room on top could take a lot of time in cooling in summers.

Absolutely amazing old fort with great views! We stayed here for just one night on our trip from Shimla to Chandigarh, it’s about an hour’s drive from Kalka station and 1.5 hours to Chandigarh. It’s out of the main tourist route and located up a small side street on the top of a hill so hard to find if you don’t have a taxi. The only way to describe it is a beautiful tranquil 600 year old palace, perched on a hill overlooking the third world dirt and chaos.

We had a deluxe room which was huge with a massive walk in shower and bathroom and paid around 4000 Rupees (we just turned up and booked) Our room opened up onto a grassy courtyard lined with mango trees and white washed walls. There are amazing views of the landscape from little balconies and windows. The terrace has amazing sunset views over the chaos below.

The food served in the restaurant was very good with an evening buffet and a good selection of curries and breads. The pool is very relaxed, however, my only gripe was the two local kids by the pool who sat next to us giggling and pointing constantly. Not sure if they belonged to the hotel or not but it was like they’d never seen westerners before.

We also had a massage, manicure and pedicure when we were there which I think was overpriced for what it was. We subsequently then didn’t have enough cash to pay for the room and the card machine didn’t work, so think twice before taking a massage!

We arrived quite tired to be given the biggest room we have ever had .A huge bathroom. It was very comfortable and the views from the terrace were beautiful.Although the dinner was very good the table cloths were dirty. They have a badminton court in the central courtyard which can get a bit noisy especially when they start playing at 6.30 in the morning.! A comfortable stop on the way to Pragpur

Our stay at Nalagarh Fort Resorts marked the beginning of our trip to Himachal Pradesh in early April, 2012. We were quite enchanted by the setting, the architecture and the decor of the place. The staff was courteous and accommodating. We were almost wishing we had stayed longer than a night. Then we had dinner. It was floating in oil and excessively spicy. We wondered how families with small children (there were several staying there at the time) would manage. We ended up the next morning with a bad case of food poisoning which partially ruined our trip. I had a look at the comments in the guest book later. The beauty of the property had earned much praise, but the food had invited adverse criticism.
We are back home and despite nearly a fortnight having gone by since our stay in Nalagarh, we have still not recovered. We now suspect the food served to us was recycled (the hotel was hosting a convention and probably made do with leftovers). In a remote area like this one, where there are few other culinary options, the meals served at a hotel are the backbone of the establishment. We are therefore quite disappointed by our experience of the place.

Room Tip: Ours was on the first floor and had a terrace all around it with nice views. It was also set apart i...
