“Amazing food & so friendly!”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

Long time since i've done a review... but this place deserves it! The beautifully refurbished Sun Hotel was a great experience on many levels. Very friendly staff, including the new management who only took over 2 weeks ago! Amazing food, (Great chef) in the beamed & beautiful restaurant, complete with open fire. The rooms are modern and v stylish... With great attention to detail. Power shower, beautiful bathroom, contemporary natural wood furniture (& slept v well for 2 nights, even with our 4 year old in the room!). Gr8 TV, quiet at night & lovely views of the hills from the room. I was even shocked by the bill at the end of our stay, as up to 6 of us at a time, had dined like kings! Thanks to the new managers Phil & Sam!

We stayed for one night at Room 10 few days back, after failing to find suitable hotel for our budget and preferred location in Windermere town. Was lucky to find last minute promotion on their website for £65 inclusive of breakfast. A bit sceptical when we parked the car next to the hotel, but boy it was so lovely on the inside. Totally surprised. Here's the pros & cons;
Pros: classic+modern feel room, very comfy bed, nicely decorated+very very clean. 5 star bathroom, power shower n ear buds :), generous complimentary tray & bottled water, very kind hosts walk us to the room, generous & hearty breakfast, 5 mins drive to windermere town, bus stops in front of hotel
Cons: road noise (room facing the busy road, but got used to it including my baby)not a big problem.quality sleep nonetheless
Summary: we really had a great stay, felt welcome n appreciated by the hosts. Highly recommended!
Suggestion to owner: change your listing to windermere town, am sure you will be a hit.

Ten of us turned up on a Saturday at about 3pm for a drink, the place was empty by the way, and was told by a sour faced lady that she would need the empty tables for diners and that we would have to squash on to one table!! There was no one in there!!
On leaving we were told that if we were going to going to come again we would have to book, NO CHANCE, so rude

First of all may say how sorry I am to hear about your experience at The Sun Hotel. I can fully appreciate your disappointment.

As of the 23rd of August 2013 The Sun Hotel has been under new management and as a result of this I would not expect any of our customers to receive a compromised level of service.

I would appeal to the all Trip Adviser readers, to review the comments made since the 23rd of August 2013 that reflect the high standards we maintain.

We do value every customer that walks through the door regardless of whether you are dining with us, staying with us or simply wish to enjoy a drink with us.

I would like to assure you and your fellow Trip Adviser readers, that should you visit The Sun Hotel again, you will receive a warm welcome and first class customer service.

Please accept our sincere apologies.

Wow! What a place! We only visited for food, we didn't stay in the accommodation, but our experience was fantastic.

I should say, first of all, that we had not booked - it was a walk in dinner, which made the our experience seem even better!

The staff bent over backwards to accommodate our party, which included my 5 year old niece. They crouched down to speak to her at 'her level' and made food recommendations for her. And she subsequently cleared her plate, which is a rare occurrence indeed!

The standard of food for the adults too was of a very high standard. Everyone had clear plates!

I do not have a bad word to say about this place! Even the toilets were nice!!!

We will definitely be returning!

We have walked and driven past this hotel on numerous occasions and never given it a second glance. It was booked last minute for a bank holiday break and we only got it through a cancellation but it was the only place we could get at such short notice. From the minute we walked through the door we were greeted by lovely and friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us.Our room was spacious and clean the only down side was the noise from the main road during the day when the windows are open but after a while you get used to it at night it isn't a problem. We booked bed breakfast and evening meal and the food was excellent we couldn't fault any of it.The hotel was going through a change in owner ship but this didn't reflect on the service we received Phil and Sam are no doubt going to be a great success and are very knowledgeable about the lakes we will definitely be returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: rooms at the back will be quieter as they are not on main road

Stayed the bank holiday weekend with friends. Even though we had arrived during a change of management, this did not deflect from the friendly service, clean comfortable rooms and lovely food. Would definately stay again.

I can't add anymore after reading all the other reviews, I totally agree with them all. We stayed for two nights the food was excellent we ate in both nights although we were going out to eat the second night, the food was so nice there we stayed in the second night. We stayed in room 12 and was a little disappointed with the size of it but then we realised it wasn't that bad we could come and go as we liked as we where near the rear exit (main door is locked after 9.30 if there's noone in the bar). Also it was quieter being at the rear of the hotel as the road seems to be constantly busy. They seem to have got it all just right, room was decorated lovely, really comfy bed (a bit too comfy), beautiful and clean room.
We walked into Bowness about 2.2miles on the first evening and back again. We walked to Ambleside the next day 3.3 both lovely places. We took the day hopper bus coming back £7.00 each but it lasted all day and you could get on and off as you like, it went to Windemere, Kendall and all the surrounding areas. All in all it was a very good break and we hope to return again.
