“Never again”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2013

I looked for a hotel that had WiFi everywhere (an important criteria as needed to work in evenings which were from 4pm at this time of year). Not so and both the hotel (NEVER worked) and free Public WiFi (must log on every 30 minutes and then it spat the dummy most times and did not work) were a non event. I got sick of hearing they had only been there 3 months which does not excuse rubbish in carpark, many leaves at front door that were never swept up, and it took Phil forever to come to the reservation counter as he was talking, and then the sticky rings from a previous guest's glass on the bedside table. The real downer was the COLD room despite being told I could control the heat it always seemed to be less in the evenings and the room was cold always, so ended up sitting under the doona and even that was not enough to keep warm and NO extra blankets supplied. The TV kept dropping out, aka 'freeze'. The chair in the room was low so even if I could connect to WiFi it was not possible to use laptop on desk anyway. The light outside my window was on till 11 and the traffic was noisy (and would not be an issue but combined with everything else was just annoying). The bathroom had a damp smell. The evening meal I had was fine, the room spacious but COLD. A place to drop in for a meal it would be fine, to stay dreadful.
It was so bad that I left a night early as I was not going to stay freezing one more night and was happy to pay the full 3 nights (only stayed two) just to get away.
Running a good hotel is about the eye for detail and some people do notice the small things.
I also booked and paid for a Kingsize bed and it was not, Queen size I would image.

First of all may I say how disappointed I am to read you had a bad experience, this was certainly not our intention.

I understand from the outset that you were unable to connect to our WIFI, I am sorry this was the case. Having checked with other guests and accessing the internet myself I can offer no explanation as to why you were unable to access the internet using our WIFI, I appreciate this was very frustrating for you.

The points raised about the 'rubbish in the car park' ,'sticky rings from a previous guest's glass on the bedside table' I agree should not happen and I will get this looked into.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your room; however had we known you felt so strongly, we would have gladly offered you something more suitable. The very last thing I want to read is that you would never stop here again, especially as we had not been given an opportunity to make your stay more comfortable.

It is quite clear from your review that you were unhappy and I am genuinely sorry you felt this way.

I would urge Trip Advisor readers to consider our other recent reviews before passing judgement.

We stayed for two nights here in October. We got a very warm welcome from the new owners, our room was modern and very clean, and the food is brilliant and very good value. It is in a good location and the walk down to Bowness was very picturesque even though it's a main road. Would highly recommend it!

Room Tip: the hotel is on the main road, so ask for a room at the back.

We had a lovely short stay (two nights) here, we have just returned and would recommend to anyone. Family orientated, very friendly staff and spotless room. Dinner and breakfast both absolutely delicious. Difficult to find fault with anything for a hotel in this price range.

We have had lunch here a few times now. Driving up to the Lakes in heavy rain can be a depressing task, but the sun broke out and we knew that lunch at the Sun Hotel would be worth the drive. It is under new management but the welcome was as friendly as ever. The distaff side of the family both chose the chicken escalope having had it before, and I was tempted too, but went for the gammon instead. We were all impressed with portion size and quality of the meal. The chicken had a lovely lemon butter with it, and my gammon was large and not too salty. A nice drop of Coniston Bluebird made a nice change from the Wainwright Bitter I had last time. Due to the inclement weather there were no other lunchtime guests which was a shame for the new management. We will certainly be going back there again - why wouldn't you?

After a long journey due to hold ups on the motorway we received a very warm welcome after being shown to our room which was immaculately clean with a fantastic view we went down to the bar for a quick drink the bar has a good selection to chose from we went for the real ale which was excellent after popping back to our room to freshen up for dinner the power shower was very invigorating and well stocked with toiletries Dinner was first class and the staff very attentive and nothing was to much trouble for them the next morning at breakfast there was the same level of service and the breakfast being the most important meal it set us up for the day i would recommend the full English the Bacon is the best i have ever tasted WELL DONE PHIL SAM & YOUR TEAM
We will definitely recommend you and will certainly be visiting you again

Booked this last minute and wanted to be near the heart of the Lakes but not right in the centre. Phil and Sam are new to this game but it didn't show they were very welcoming, polite and eager to please. Breakfast and evening meal were very substantial. The bedroom and en-suite were very clean and the decor up to date and everything had been thought of to the last little detail. There was safe, adequate parking to the side of the hotel. Plenty to do in the area, had a lovely walk to Wansfell Pike and saw Golden Eagles along our way, lovely view from the top. Would certainly recommend this hotel however long your stay. After a long journey up to the Lakes we had a very warm, friendly greeting by Phil and Sam the new owners. The family room on the front was perfect with outstanding views to the lake. It was a good sized room, very clean and decorated nicely. The staff were lovely and very accommodating. We had such a relaxed time where nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was amazing; everything was fresh and of good quality. Even the coffee was lovely which is a must for us! Situated in a very convenient location to travel around and see the sights with a very warm welcome on your return. We can't give Phil and Sam at the Sun Hotel enough praise for the welcome and service they gave to us while we were there. We have already recommended to friends and family and will continue to do so. It won't be long before we return! Thank you from Pete and Rach Evans
