“Great hotel --- but”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

Stayed 10 days based at this hotel whilst re-visiting Almeria for the first time in 20+ years. Most of the coast has developed into the high rise, over built disasters of the majority of the Costas, but Las Negras and Capo de Gato, thanks to national parks status, is little changed.

Many reviewers complained of the hotel being hard to find. My advice, ignore sat nav, slow down, use your eyes. The hotel is of a striking modern appearance as per photos, easy to see from main road.

Fast check in, friendly and efficient. Our room, like others, very modern "bauhaus meets Ikea". Very white and straight lines. Comfortable bed, good pillows, plenty of storage with bathroom behind ceiling to floor sliding door. A little unusual in layout, but as with all areas of this hotel, very clean.

We stayed on half board plan and pleased we did, because breakfast was worthy of any top hotel with its array of fresh juices and fruits, choice of cold meats and cheeses, with many different pastries and cereals, all of top quality. Evening meal, again, was well prepeared, using quality products and cooked by a chef who takes pride in his work.

BUT

Staying in March, outside pools were drained and being repaired. One would expect to use the indoor pool that is listed in the facilities and is usual in a four star hotel of this quality. But it is in a spar, run separately from the hotel, and the charge per person is 25 euros per entry. This is not acceptable for a quality hotel, suggest management amends this.

The usual question, would we stay again, no, unless the indoor pool is part of the hotel.

We live locally to the Cabo de Gata, and enjoy the hippie laidback vibe of Las Negras. This is the first time that we have stayed at Hotel Cala Grande, and we would definitely return. We stayed in a standard double room €99 including breakfast.

The staff at reception, in the restaurant and in the spa were all very friendly and spoke a wide variety of languages.

The beds were extremely comfortable, and there is also a Pillow Menu on offer. There was also a terrace with stunning views to the sea, but a table and chairs may have been better than a sunbed and bench.

We did pay an extra €18 per person to use the spa. It is not a huge spa but does have a Circuit including sauna, hamman, plunge pool, different hot/cold showers, pool with jets and jacuzzi with jets. Very relaxing.

I realise that many people could not find the hotel using GPS, and we did watch approx 20 cars zooming down the high street which ends in the sea ...I think an oldfashioned map may be better in this tiny fishing village. Worth the find though!

Room Tip: We stayed in 204 overlooking the pool, with fab views to the sea.

Mind you, it is not easy to find, especially when Nijar is given as location. Las Negras is part of Nijar but more than 20km away froim the center of the village. Best is to put the coordinates (longitude and latitude) in your GPS, since also the street (C/Navegante) was not known in our system (monthly updated Garmin). But once arrived we felt that the search had been worthwile. A wonderfull hotel, modern architecture, furniture designed by the great architects of last century, no unneccesary decoration, a place to become ZEN. We loved it. On top of this, the personel was very helpfull and up to their tasks, the breakfast buffet plentifull. We certainly will come back.

Hotel Spa Cala Grande is a very nice hotel, both from the design perspective (the pool area is really wonderful) and the location one, it is on Las Negras village, a very small but cool spot and from there you can easily visit all the Cabo de Gata area (mainly the beautiful beaches). I'd definitely recommend it if you want to visit this part of Spain.

Cala Grande hotel is a very modern and nice hotel. Rooms are big and very clean. They have 2 pools, one of them for children. Both are very nice although they have thought about design and not about security. Pools are surrounded by marble floor that is extremely slippery and dangerous. The pool bar is very good. The barman is quite professional, something very rare in a beach place like this. Breakfast is the best I have ever had in a beach hotel. They offer different fresh fruits, breads, eggs, tomato salads, cheese, etc.

The hotel has a very decent and wide complimentary gym. Also very rare in a beach hotel like this. They also have a SPA, but it is not complimentary.

Hotel recepcionists are very kind but, to be honest, they do not know how to answer most of the questions.

Las Negras is a nice place but you should know that the beach is awful. No sand, just stones and a lot of boats. The "El Playazo" beach is at 10 minutes drive. It is very good, but not as good as other beaches in El Cabo. There is not medical care in Las Negras. Unfortunately we had a health problem and we had to wait 15 mins until an ambulance WITHOUT doctor came.

In short, the hotel is very very good, a jewel in Cabo de Gata, but is located in Las Negras and that is a problem for me.

Stayed for 7 days at the end of July. Interconnecting rooms were a bonus and immaculately clean. The super-king size beds were wonderfully comfortable so we slept very well. The balcony was ideal for catching the morning sun and a place of retreat when the temperature rose in the afternoon. Staff were incredibly helpful and the location meant we could walk into the village to the various bars and restaurants. Breakfast was an ample buffet served daily til 11am and the few times we dined in the restaurant we were not disappointed. Las Negras has a population of 300 outside of the summer months and really is untouched by mass tourism. We met no other English tourists; in fact very little English was spoken. A truly relaxing, blissful break!

Room Tip: Rooms were spacious but the corner suites had uninterrupted sea views!
