“Historic Small Hotel”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

During our visit, there was special event in Barcelona. The hotels were full and rate was high. We found this one which is only about 15 minutes drive from Barcelona city centre.
It is locating in a small town. The car park is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. We had problem in locating the car park. Their staff were very nice jumping into our car to show us the direction.
That night was our last night in Spain of this trip. We planned to pack our luggage that night. We did quite a lot of shopping. So, there was really a lot plus the luggage we had to bring to the hotel room. Unfortunately, the path between car path and hotel was not plain and smooth one. And, there was no escalator in the hotel. Though the hotel staff gave us a hand, we still had a hard time in fact.
The hotel was originally an old house and renovated becoming a hotel. The interior decoration the hotel was a bit old and the room was small.
We included breakfast in our booking. It offered continental breakfast. I requested for skimmed milk for the cereals. The waitress was not good in English and could not understand at the beginning. I had no attempt to insist and just tried to take the normal milk. However, the waitress was very keen to clarify my request. She went to ask her colleague what my request was and asked me to write it down. Though they were not able to offer skimmed milk, I really appreciate their attitude of taking client's request seriously.

It's old and lovely, in the small town square, next to the church. The old whitewashed walls are covered in original oil paintings and photos, with all kinds of old farm implements, doctor's bags, suitcases, all over the place. I think it used to be an old farmhouse. The room we had - a normal double - was calm, simple, pretty. Two comfy armchairs. A lovely old wooden table. Comfy bed with lovely sheets. Shower-room. Wooden floors. The church bells ring close by but somehow didn't wake us. The staff were really, really welcoming - so different from the simply polite reception you get in big hotels. It truly marked the place out. There is a quite smart restaurant which is well known in the region and quite pricey, which looks out over flower boxes and the whole valley. We didn't get to eat there, but I had the most delicious breakfast for 6 euros there, sitting in sunshine with a lovely breeze as the windows roll back. Juices, fruit, help yourself cheese of five or six kinds, local ham, unusually good pastries, cereal... There didn't seem to be a lot to do in and around Cabrils, and the seafront down at Villasar de Mar wasn't very attractive at all, but if you are passing through the area and looking for a hotel, you really have to stop here. It's gorgeous and so very welcoming. You can easily get into Barcelona, which is about 20km away. There's a bus at the end of the road down to the train station in Villasar, and then you just hop on into Barcelona.

My wife and I spent a few days just before Christmas in Cabrils, which is about seven or eight miles north of Barcelona, to visit an old schoolmate who has settled down there. The town and the hotel were both a delight --- small, friendly, unpretentious, and quite accommodating. Communication was amusing because though I speak Spanish, I do not speak Catalá (the local dialect) but it was never a problem. We had a top floor room with a splendid view, though it was a modest struggle to get up there with two suitcases; but it was quite comfy, snug and warm with a great bed and a very modern bathroom. Breakfast was a high quality affair with superb coffee; in fact I was assured by quite a few people that the restaurant at Hostal de La Plaça was the main attraction, though we never actually ate lunch or dinner there during our stay (perhaps next time); to get to the hotel lobby you must actually go through the restaurant, which I thought was a little weird but ultimately all part of the place's abundant charm.
