We only stayed one night at this great little hotel but really wishes we'd had longer there. The house is a beautiful Art Nouveau mansion which is Luiz's family home. He does the cooking (tasty traditional fare very reasonably priced) while his wife Sophie looks after the guests and is very helpful with regard to the interesting sites of the Garrotxa area (full of dormant volcanoes and spectacular scenery). Bedrooms are stylish and comfortable and the house and garden are extremely relaxing.

Having booked a Villa for a week in Begur, we added a night before and another after staying in this beautiful hotel. We discovered that the saving in flights by not travelling on a Saturday, almost covered our hotel costs. The hotel itself was beautiful and Sophie was incredibly helpful, offering many suggestions for things to do in this unexpectedly beautiful location. We ate dinner here on both nights and were served delicious and authentic Spanish food with a great choice of reasonable wines. The only slight downside was that as we had a flight to catch on our final morning and had to leave the hotel before 9.00 we were unable to have any breakfast as this was served only after 9.00. This however, would not put us off returning. The warm welcome, beautiful and comfortable rooms and delicious cuisine, in this very interesting region would certainly draw us back.

It was a real pleasure having such friendly guests to stay who appreciated the hotel, cuisine and our hospitality. We will definitely be as flexible as possible with our breakfast times so that your next stay will be 100% satisfactory. La Garrotxa is a very beautiful and undiscovered part of Catalonia and there are indeed many things to see and do here. It's a shame you didn't have more time to discover the beauty spots of this region. Many thanks for your kind review and please come back again!

We stayed three nights in August 2013. I wish we could have stayed longer. This was our first visit to Catalonia and we wanted somewhere from which we could explore this central region known as the Garrotxa. The hotel is run by Sophie and Llouis. Our room was spacious, comfortable and elegantly furnished with original Spanish modernista furniture, with a balcony overlooking the garden and distant hills. Breakfast and dinner, (dinner was either prix-fix or a-la-carte), were prepared by the owners and served in the garden. The food was excellent. Our hosts were friendly and helpful, helping us plan walks and excursions, providing us with maps and advice. There are walks and bike rides that can be taken without having to drive (the hotel rents out bikes), and there are many places to visit within a short driving distance, including the larger towns of Girona and Figueres, and many smaller towns and villages. Our favorite town was Besalu, a small town with a perfectly preserved older section, with Romanesque churches and other buildings of interest. The region also includes Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, a uniquely beautiful area of extinct volcanoes. One of the highlights of our trip was the nearby volcano of Santa Margarida. A short hike takes you to the center of the crater, in which a small hermitage was built in the 12th century. Had we only had more time, there were many other small towns we would like to have visited, and hikes that we could have taken.

This magnificent building makes for a complete immersion in the Catalan countryside and an enchanting stay. The hotel is close to a river that has many waterfalls and calm swimming spots which is perfect for kids and adults alike. The hotel also has comfortable gardens where one can relax, have a drink from the bar and/or eat some of the delicious local food that is prepared at the hotel. Overall, an exremely pleasant surprise! It is only an hour and so by car or TEISA bus from Barcelona, so if you're around there, be sure to make the detour, it's completely worth it!

We stayed at this wonderful hotel on the first day of our walking holiday. As soon as we entered we knew we were in for a treat. Our beautiful room was filled with antiques and the view from the balcony was great. Good food & wine in lovely surroundings and all for such a reasonable price. All in all the perfect start to our Pyrenees holiday. Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony.

A truly wonderful hotel and it's most valuable asset, Sophie and Luis, were absolutely fantastic hosts. We were on an 8 week holiday from Australia and our 2 night stay at Can Garay , as part of a cycling tour, was one of the highlights of our trip. Our room was lovely as were the meals. On the morning of our departure it was raining heavily and at Luis' suggestion Sophie arranged for our bikes to be transported with our luggage to our next destination. Then Sophie drove us all the way to Girona. A most appreciated gesture.

We had a great stay at Hotel Can Garay. The building is a gorgeous family home that has been converted to an inn. Both the interior and exterior are really special, tall windows and dark wood paneling on the inside and a beautiful garden in which to sit. Antiques fill this lovely hotel. It is within walking distance from the bike/walking trail and a beautiful river and falls. I would highly recommend dinner there- we had not planned on eating at the inn but ended up enjoying a wonderful example of regional cuisine prepared by Luis and it was fantastic. Sophie provided us with plenty of tourist information on the area.
