Just spent 2 nights here on a kgb deal. After reading some of the reviews we had low expectations , however we were very pleasantly surprised. It is more like a pub than a hotel but lots of positives, including WIFI and Freeview and free parking,.
We were a bit taken aback when we arrived to be asked what time we wanted breakfast, and what we'd like to eat! (20 hours in advance!) But the chef, who also acts as receptionist, just doesn't like waste, and the food was delicious. We didn't eat in - there was a pub in town that served very cheap pub meals. I think it was The Beacon, a bit like a Wetherspoons. We also had lunch in The Plough, the barmaid there was lovely, very friendly, and the food was fine for lunch. .Staff at the Lord nelson are all very friendly and helpful and for what we paid, which included a free bottle of wine, we would highly recommend it. They told us when we were leaving that they're going to be doing a 2 for 1 offer so if you're interested in visiting, ring and ask about it.

We went on a KGB deal.. Two nights, two people, b + b... £49!.,. Excellent value.. Would have paid more!.. Ate in their restaurant/diner... Was lovely .. Reasonably priced for what it was..breakfast lovely.. No complaints!..would stay agAin.. Great using this as a base to explore!! Very nice room..large, modern and clean!
Linen on bed beautiful and the room smelled of fresh linen!...cheerful chatty staff.. Think that the way you access their car park should be included in the information at time of booking.. But that is literally all I could 'complain' about!

My husband and I booked this hotel last September and, as they said they were fully booked until after Xmas we booked a weekend nearest to our March 30th wedding anniversary. It didn't look anything like a hotel, more an old pub! There was no reception or any instructions on the front door apart from 'knock & wait.'
The room was big enough but drab. There were rattling sash windows and, although we knew it to be a listed building the curtains were thin and unlined. Being there on the worst snow weekend ever this year the room was chilly, as was the dining room. There had been a couple of cancellations that weekend because of the snow but there were only 4 couples there! Food was OK but the cook served us as there was only 3 people working there. The room was very creaky when moving around and the mattress and pillows did not have any protectors on - yuck!!
A friend of mine got the same KGB deal but could not book a weekend so had her money refunded. Won't be going again.

Room Tip: Not over the road.

Just spent 2 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed it. It`s a charming old building with cosy rooms. Beams to duck your head, twisty staircast`s etc. Because it`s old don`t expect lifts, PVC windows etc. The welcome is excellent and the staff are very helpful. We arrived on a Sunday night in deep snow. Bags were helped up to the room which was very cosy and warm. Easy to walk into the centre of town where there are plenty of places to eat (Wetherspoons) as the hotel doesn`t do evening meals on Sundays.

Breakfast is excellent, full English and we ate one evening - again excellent cooking, attentive chef.
Lot`s of plus - free wifi (just stayed in an Ibus hotel who want to charge £8 per day) plus free full range of normal freeview TV.

free parking. However your satnav will take you to the front of the hotel - don`t despair - go back to the main road turn left then find your next turn left, past a pub and follow the road to the end.
Stay if you like individual private b+b/hotels, don`t stay if you want corporate standard service.

Last plus, change of towels every day. Good base - lots of stuff to visit within driving. Was on a kgb deal but still had excellent service. Another time will phone direct as they are doing they`re own deal.
