“Finally Telford has some proper Cocktails!”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Have not stayed here but do enjoy coming here for cocktails with friends. I was first introduced to Carriages by attending a birthday gathering there and loved it.

The lighting sets a nice mood, you don't get rammed in there (i.e. some places pack as many in a tiny place as they can), the staff friendly, the music is not too loud so you can talk and enjoy time with your friends and most importantly the cocktails good!!

Not sure it has been promoted that well as I had not heard of it until the birthday gathering where I fell in love with the place.

Reminds me I am due a visit!

We booked our 2 night stay direct with Carriages. The booking was confirmed promptly via email.

Upon arrival the check in was fine & we were shown to Room 2.

The room was recently refurbished & was very nicely presented with an enormous bed!

The Full English Breakfast was massive & the largest I have ever had the pleasure to eat.

The three course evening meal was nicely presented & a good sized portion - no noveaux cuisine here!

James the Manager & his staff were very helpful & nothing was too much trouble.

It was my wife's Birthday whilst we were away & James not only decorated our dining table but also emerged after dinner with a birthday cake & lit candles - a lovely touch.

We visited Ironbridge Gorge & the Museums which are highly recommended. They are just a 10 minute drive from Carriages. .

Carriages was a most enjoyable weekend break & one which I would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Room 2 is highly recommended

We booked our 2 nights directly with Carriages who were very helpful; Stephen who took our booking explained exactly what was in the deal and sent us an email to confirm.
We arrived after we found where it was - thank goodness for sat nav!
Stephen met us on arrival, told us where to park (free) then carried our bags upstairs to Room 1. We were impressed as soon as we walked into the reception area; the whole place exudes quality and attention to detail. The décor is very pleasantly different and very pleasing.
Our room overlooked the Wellington railway station and you could see All Saints church and some of its grounds from our window.
The town was literally 2 minuets walk to get there. Another nice touch was that there was a book in our room which gave us loads of good background information on the town both past and present. We thought we might go into Telford, which was 10 - 15 minuets drive but never got around to it as the weather was good and it was nice to just relax and enjoy our surroundings. In reality we didn't use the car during our whole stay.
Our room was a full 5 stars, with excellent décor, very clean and tidy and the en-suit bathroom was the best, lots of room with a double sized shower.
The food again was a full 5 stars. The restaurant and bar were in keeping in their presentation - good attention to detail and very clean and tidy.
We went down for dinner and were met in the bar by James who took our drinks order and our dinner order a little later.
The food was great the service was great and the place was great.
The room was warm and quiet, yet you could hear the buzz of life around you. The Full English breakfast was just that, perhaps the best we've ever had - with proper bespoke sausages! Wow.
We could go on and on, in conclusion would we recommend it - yes 10 out of 10.
Thank you Stephen and James for making our stay so pleasant and memorable.
Liz & Mike

Room Tip: Try to get one overlooking the Railway Station.

Have just come back from an excellent break at this fabulously renovated hotel. After some initial diffficulty locating the entrance we were met by Stephen who took our bags off us and showed us to our very well presented and well upgraded room. The service from all the staff was superb and nothing was to much trouble. The food which we were told was cooked by the owners partner was amongst the best we have ever tasted and we were served with complimentary cocktails chosen from an extensive list. We are considering returning in the summer.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front overlook the station so could posssibly be noisier if windows open.

This was a Mighty Deals 2 day break. Very good and caring service from James, the Manager and the owner also was on hand to welcome us. Indeed all the staff were friendly and keen to see that we were comfortable. The hotel has obviously had an expensive upgrade (it was the former Station Hotel) which was impressive and of high quality. Our bedroom, no.1 was excellent, equipped with the usual facilities It overlooked the train station, but there was little noise from there. The dining room was pleasant with fresh flowers on the table. Breakfast gets a 5 star rating and we were offered a cooked breakfast even though it was not part of our package. Dinner was home cooked and reasonable, but the choice was fairly limited. The same menu each night. Lasagne, Chicken Caesar salad, bangers and mash, fish and chips or salmon. Starters and puddings OK. A strange complaint, but the plates had far too much food on them - not usual in a boutique hotel. For example, we opted for ice cream on our final night and we had a piled up dish with 5 scoops of ice cream.
Wine choice was good and reasonably priced, and we enjoyed our free cocktails.
So far,so good. The downside is the location between the bus station and the train station. There is free parking round the back in a scruffy commercialised area.
The big downer was the noise factor at night. On our last night there was loud noise from the cocktail bar until 3am which kept us awake. Therein lies the main problem. The owner is catering for two different customers. Those expecting the 'boutique hotel' and those expecting a late night drink in a cocktail bar who cannot be expected to carry on their conversations in hushed tones. Our stay was not at the weekend.
You pays your money and takes your choice! If you like a comfortable hotel with pleasant staff and late night drinking, this may suit you!

Room Tip: No 1 was good. Don't know about others.
