For the 70’th birthday of our family’s grandfather, we all – 10 adults and 13 children, set out to Crete to celebrate.
We stayed at Eleona’s for 3 nights in seven cottages. The place is truly beautiful, at the heart of the mountains surrounded by olive trees and natural flora.
Every little detail is taken to heart: gardens full of herbs with little signs describing the herb, ‘bird’ chimney tops, the use of natural and traditional materials in the interior giving both a warm and a comfortable feeling.
The cottages preserve a traditional atmosphere, are clean and have a kitchenette with a fridge and hot plate, plasma and d.v.d (there’s a small movie library at the lobby), c.d player.
The family cottages have a galleria with a king size bed, and french doors open to a balcony overlooking the breathtaking view. The apricots on the trees were ripped just on time waiting to be nibbled by us.
Manolis, the friendly owner, is there ready to help and recommend and the staff is always smiling.
A big advantage is the Taverna at the hotel. Breakfast is served as a buffet and is dined either in the taverna or at the large and pretty balcony.
We enjoyed all of our dinners there; traditional dishes such as mussacca, lamb with potatoes and herbs, roast goat.
All of the dishes were excellent with the appetizer: Greek salad, stuffed vine leaves, cheeses and wine. The kids also had a choice: chicken with tomatoes, sufflaki, spaghetti bolognaise, chips, sausages and more.
The Taverna is open all day and we recommend even if not staying at Eleonas, to hop in for lunch.
The staff was so pleasant and made an effort to make us comfortable and met every request during our meals.
At the top story of the taverna is a playroom with a soccer table, ping pong table, large ball room-Gymboree,; When the kids finished their meal they ran up to play leaving us the adults to comfortably continue to chat long after the meal ended. (At other restaurants we find that we have to either keep the kids busy or leave straight after dining).
Attached to the taverna hall is a bar where we had our private celebration for granddad’s birthday. There’s a screen and it is possible to connect to a computer for presentations.
The swimming pool is lovely and there are a few fitness facilities, the kids very much enjoyed these.
The surrounding is beautiful. We hiked the Ruvas Gorge, a track of a few hours going down end ending right at Eleonas (you can also continue to the lake). Manolis recommended that we drive to the peak of the mountain – it took an hour with charming views.
We also drove a half hour to Matala Beach and enjoyed the local festival of repainting the street. We enjoyed the beach and the swim although the water was cold (end of May). We dined at one of the restaurants on the beach
We wish to thank Manolis and all those who succeeded to set up and preserve such a unique place as Eleonas.
We all returned home, from the youngest 2 years old to the oldest 70 year old, so contented with a taste for more...
