The town of Brez, in Trentino-Alto Adige, has only 700 inhabitants, and they are usually not visible in this quiet little town. So it was such a pleasant surprise to find this gourmet restaurant in the almost deserted main square! The bright dining room is part of a hotel with thirteen rooms.
We started the meal with the complimentary "amuse bouche," and ended with the complimentary tiny cookies and pastries served on a wood plank, all hand made on the premises. I ate some of the best ravioli I have ever had. Included in the menu are rabbit, quail, lamb chops, a special cheese baked in the oven, and other delicious dishes. Of course, there are also the local dishes, like potato pancakes with artisan salamis or porcini mushrooms, roasts served with "polenta," a corn meal mush, etc.
This restaurant is definitely worth the trip to Brez, not only because of the food, but also because the drive there is very scenic and sometimes breathtaking. The mountain roads are flanked by vineyards, with the the jagged snowy peaks of the Dolomite mountains towering above, and mountain streams glistening below.
