This is a unique, completely different type of B&B then we have ever experienced..... Well above the usual "Farmhouse" Bed & Breakfast. For starters its REAL, not a house with an outbuilding, 1 horse, a dog and 2 cows calling itself a "Farmhouse B&B". Pat and Miriam operate a working farm with not only tons of livestock but, DEER. They raise and sell venison all over the World from this beautiful 146 acre farm just outside Michelstown. The fact they offer, a successful B&B AND operate a very productive farm left us speechless. They took the time out of their busy day to show us through the barns, and outdoor pens to a wide variety of Pigs, Boar, Goats, Kittens, Dogs, and finally beautiful, happy Deer. Every part of this facility was groomed and tended to.... not at all what you'd expect from 'a working' farm, barn and grounds.
One of the large out-buildings houses a recently professionally decorated B&B with large rooms / showers and a full size TV /WiFi. The breakfast was old fashioned full-size Irish (with 'special' bonus of venison sausage) and the interest in their visitors was sincere. Top it off with an owner Farmer Entrepreneur, that is also a accomplished Wine Maker [with numerous Awards], who has built a custom made, killer wine cellar and you have a overnight stay not to be matched anywhere in Ireland (that we know of). If you have the time; you can even book an evening meal and maybe taste your FIRST meal of superbly prepared venison and boar.
It only got better for us, when they knew of, and sent us to, a beautiful, little Car Museum in Clonmel ( The Veteran, Vintage and Classic car Museum) that helped us fulfill the ultimate part of our journey, so we couldn't have been more pleased with the extra effort.
If your tired of the humdrum, same-o, same-o B&B and love animals like we do, my wife and I suggest this great Farmhouse called "Ballinwillin House". Incidentally, the estate house dates back to 1776 so, you'll enjoy seeing it (from the exterior) as well. Sleep well ~behind an electrically operated gate and camera monitored security. Enjoy !

My husband and I spent 2 nights in this first class B&B and would return in the blink of an eye! The room was large, comfortable and clean, well decorated and welcoming. The bathroom was large with good water pressure. The breakfast was to die for! Everything was made on the farm, the bacon, sausages, eggs, oat cakes. . . you get the picture! Our hosts were extremely welcoming and warm, and we felt totally at ease. We will certainly return when next in that lovely part of the world.

I am just home after 3 nights at Ballinwillin House with the Mulcahy family. I travelled on my own for a quiet break mountain biking and horse riding. Miriam and Pat are the most amazing hosts. Words can't describe and its not often I'm stuck for words! ..... from their very warm, very homely welcome, to the wonderful quirkiness of their farm (deer, wine and boar plus other friends!) to Miriams wonderful cooking (all home produce) and Pats tour of the wine cellar and farm. Any guest would be extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to visit this beautiful home. As busy as Pat and Miriam are they are great to make the time they spend with their guests dining, chatting and sharing ideas. How lucky am I to have had a break like it. Thank you very much to all involved. CS.

We had no plans to visit Mitchelstown, but time was not on our side. We were looking for something less expensive, but all the B&Bs in town were full, so we had no option but Ballinwillin House. We were lucky.

This is a beautiful house, with comfortable and tasteful accommodation, owned and managed by a delightful couple. Pat and Miriam are superb hosts: warm, welcoming, interesting, and very good company, the sort of people you can imagine being lifelong friends.

I hope to go back.

Beautiful home, grounds and farm animals. Just to get up close to a heard of Irish Red Deer was a real experience. Accommodations were clean, tastefully decorated and modern. Breakfast was out of this world. Stayed two days and wish we had stayed much longer. We will return. The town of Mitchelstown just a few blocks from the B&B is picturesque with several historic site. A drive to the Mitchelstown Caves is also well worth the effort.
