Description: Recommended by Michelin 2010 We stopped here by happy accident this Sunday lunchtime. Run by a husband and wife team the food is outstanding and excellent value for money. Just down the road from Sissinghurst Castle. Hugh's food and Leonora's charming service deserve a wider audience.

“Excellent food, atmosphere can be strained”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

Rather like Apicus, the food at Rankins is exquisite, but the atmosphere can be a little pressured unless it is busy.
It is worth a visit to experience the cuisine

“Good food, but in dreary settings”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

I travelled down from London to meet my parents and a couple of family friends who were over from the other side of the world visiting. It was a Sunday, and there were no other customers in the restaurant, so it was very quiet. No music playing, just the tick tocking of the grandfather clock going on behind our conversation. The restaurant setting might be described by some as 'quaint' and 'unique,' however upon arrival, we were met by a musty smell, and felt it needed a good dust over. Overall, we thought it was a strange, quite depressing atmosphere.
The food was beautifully cooked, although we thought it was a bit overpriced.
The service ended on a low: we had arrived at 12.30pm, and by 2.30pm we were finishing our tea and coffee. By this time the hostess/owner was standing in the room with us, staring out the window. She continued doing this for 20-30 minutes, until one of us approached her and asked if she were closing soon. She responded "I think 3 hours is enough don't you?"
This kind of put a downer on our day. We were having a big catch up with friends who we hadn't seen in over 10 years, and after this comment, we felt like unwelcome visitors in someone' home.

“Good food, good service, nice atmosphere, good value”
Reviewed 29 April 2013

We had a very pleasant evening at Rankins in Sissinghurst. We were met by the owner who welcomed us and sat us down at our table. She chatted with us for a while before asking for our initial drinks order. We ordered Rankins Smokie and smoked salmon to start. The Smokie was presented hot in a ramekin and was delicious. The smoked salmon was good as well. We had roast duck confit and lamb noisettes for mains, followed by apricot tarte tartin and cheeseboard. It was all very tasty, well presented on the plate, and washed down with G+Ts to start, then two nice half bottles of red and white wine, followed by a port with the cheeseboard. The atmosphere was good, the owner attentive, excellent service and delicious food. It wasn't too expensive and was good value. We'll be eating there again.

“Another great evening at Rankins!”
Reviewed 9 March 2013

What a lovely evening we had at this superb restaurant. It is a firm favourite with our family and each time we go, we enjoy it every bit as much as the first time we visited. We love the cosy atmosphere and the food is just so good. I had the smokie - amazing for me as I don't usually like fish - and my husband had the egg noodles which he described as excellent. I then had the lamb noisettes and he had the duck confit and again both were delicious. What we like so much about the food here is that it is traditional and not over complicated so you can really taste and enjoy the ingredients. And we love the welcome we get. We feel like old friends each time we go. We'll be back soon!

“We'll be back!”
Reviewed 25 February 2013

This was our second visit to Rankins and was quite as enjoyable as our first. We were warmly welcomed by Lee and nothing was too much trouble for her. One of the strengths of this restaurant is its sense of intimacy yet also the feeling that you are having a meal with friends. It's so refreshing and unusual to have someone front of house who takes a genuine interest in your life and wefare, and it makes for a warm and friendly atmosphere. As for the food, we were both extremely happy with our selections - the smokie was outstanding and the balance of flavours just right, we had the bean stew as a main and thought that delicious, in fact everything was exquisite. The cost seemed very reasonable for a three course meal, cheese interlude and quality bottle of wine. Highly recommended.
