Velo Vercors is located in a beautiful setting, with wonderful views, in particular, from the garden and terrace.

I chose the B&B option and was certainly not disappointed. The room was comfortable (with an ensuite bathroom), and the breakfasts healthy and substantial: museli, yoghurt, fruit, bread and croissants, jams and of course, tea and coffee.

The cycling in the Vercors region is incredible. The climbs are challenging, the descents exhilarating and the landscape ever changing. The roads are extremely quiet, and the towns and villages encountered are full of interest and history. With Roger's help, I was able to do 6 rides of between 100 & 150k, with minimal duplication (although it has to be said, there are many roads that you will want to ride again & again). If you have a Garmin, download free 'open street maps' from the net, and use a site like Bikeroutetoaster to plot your routes- this ensures troublefree navigation, and also an opportunity to explore less common roads. Having ridden several times in the French Alps and Pyrenees, and also in Italy, I can honestly say that the Vercors is a cut-above for cycling.

My friend and I spent a week at Velo Vercors with Roger and Teresa staying in a gite from June 29. After day 1, the weather was fantastic and we spent the days riding the hills with the maps and instructions provided. I am not a very strong rider but the ride routes were tailored to suit us and the astonishing views and finds along the way were worth the climbs. However, there are amazing places to ride without climbs like Pont-en-Royans with the houses hanging from the cliff side. The highlights for me were the ride to Saint-Antoine Abbey, which is a working church surrounded by a medieval village. A magic place. And also the ride to Combe Laval, where the road is cut into the side of the cliff and the views are panoramic. Just keep your eye on the road when you are riding! But there are plenty of stopping points.
We ate out at the village of St Jean-en-Royans mostly, which is a 5 min walk, and the locals were friendly and hospitable and the language barrier never proved too much of an issue but I did use a pocket dictionary. The food was excellent and healthy with lots of salads and great value.
Teresa provided dinner on a few nights for all the guests featuring local produce and wines. This was a feast and a great way to talk with the other guests. Informally, guests met for drinks in the common area most days and we often dined at the village together.
This was a fantastic experience. I did feel a bit intimidated by the other "fanatic" riders but there is definitely a ride for anyone. Would love to return for more. And the drivers are friendly and tolerant, unlike some Melbourne experiences. I did feel incredibly safe on the roads.
The hire bikes organised were excellent and Roger looked after any issues encountered.
The accommodation was basic but comfortable. There was no music or tv so a bit quiet in the gite but there was a cd player and heaps of cds in the common area.

We've just stayed for 2 nights with Velo Vercors. It was amazing, we're still in Saint Jean but they were full so we could only have the two nights. Teresa went out of her way to book us into a hotel and made the arrangements for us. I'm still going to be riding with them over the next few days.

The location is stunning - if you're reading this and are wondering how good it is the think no more, it's brilliant for cycling. Just make sure you take the guided rides with Roger as he is a font of knowledge and has some really excellent rides up his sleeve.

I love the outside seating area there, the whole place is amazing.

Well worth spending your hard earned cash on a visit - just don't fill up the two weeks I'm already planning for next year (it really is that good).

Room Tip: Book well in advance for TdF week.

We spent three days last week at Velo Vercors. Teresa and Roger (the owners) are very nice people and do everything to give you a nice holiday. Roger provided us on forehand with some beautiful routes with spectacular views. After cycling, there was time to relax on the large covered terrace. The B&B we had booked was equipped with good beds and a bathroom with the necessary amenities. The bikes were safely parked in a garage with opportunity for small repairs.

Just returned from three days at Velo Vercors. The weather wasn't on our side but we did manage to ride two of the three days and those rides were epic. It's all up and then down so remember to bring some layers for cold descents!

Can't beat the insider knowledge that Roger provides or the sense of welcome both he and Theresa give their guests.

Hungry riders be warned, finding an open restaurant in Saint-Jean-en-Royans Sunday through Wednesday can be difficult. Make sure you hit up the local Carrefour in advance in case you're shut down. And don't expect the Carrefour to be open after your ride!!!

*There's a take out pizza/pasta place at the far corner of town that's hidden on a side street but usually open for business. The pizza is great and they'll even sell you a bottle of wine or beer.

Options at this small gite ran from 3 apartments with 2-3 bedrooms/modest kitchens or the B&B cave rooms (we chose the latter). If you are tall, the double beds in the cave rooms aren't optimal. There's also no window so if you want fresh air you'll need to crack the door.

We'd rate the accommodation 2-3 stars. Nice linens, clean, but pretty basic. The reason we gave Velo Vercors 4 stars is because Roger and Theresa make up for the rooms with their spirits, style, and good will.

Room Tip: If you are tall your best option is to ask to have two twin beds put together. The double beds are too narrow and short for anyone over six feet.
