“this is how I imagined a vineyard in Georgia”
Reviewed 13 May 2013

We visited Twins Old Cellar winery on 2th May and spent there one night.
In my opinion Alzani valley is the most beautiful area of Georgia, with a view on green fields followed by Caucasus main ridge with white snowy mountains.
The winery itself look like I had imagined Georgian winery before I came to the country. Winery facilities are made of brick, wood and clay, and are very well maintained. We had room number 1 with a balcony with the view on vineyard and the mountains. Room facilities are just fine, even with a/c, nothing to be desired more. In the evening we had a great dinner with local cousine and as much wine as we could handle. In the same time some Georgians from local community had their supra, and we had opportunity to listen to traditional songs. Its was a great experience and taking into consideration that nothing was arranged, it is hard to believe that ordinary people are so good song performers. All the time winery manager was on the place taking care of us. We really had a feeling being guests of that family for a while.

As far as the location is concerned the place is lovely and there is nothing to complain about. When you go out from the room you enter the world of miracle. Winery, kvevri so big that it looks almost impossible to exist. The sun is shining, you hear birds singing and sheep calling:). The rooms are quite satisfactory- you are in a village after all. But what we didn't like most of all was breakfast. We were 10 people and what we got was only bread, small amount of butter, cheese and white cheese with honey. No vegetables- it's a country for god's sake! It was poor and there was nothing that looked like Georgian hospitality...

Room Tip: Room nr 2 has got a great view- you will get a balcony. Nr 7 is quite small.

There are plenty of homestays in Telavi itself, some cheaper, but I would view The Twins Old Cellar as much better owing to its great location, wonderful food and friendly staff. In my view is one of the best vantage points to enjoy one of the most magical regions of Georgia.

As you will see from the photos, the building is in an L shape that embraces a vineyard. Many of the rooms have balconies looking over the vineyard, and the view from the balcony is towards the Greater Caucasus range. Sitting on the balcony, you will see the drama of clouds tipping over the mountain range and shifting the colour and light around the foothills and peaks. Swifts and housemartins dart around the vineyard. It is a lovely setting.

Downstairs there is a dining room and you can have meals prepared once, twice or three times a day. The standard of cooking was superb - every night was a feast, and a fire was lit when needed.

The rest of the building is a winery creating wine in the traditional Kakhetian style. Needless to say the wine served with meals is very good. There was also plenty of ice-cold Borjomi water.

We paid 60 euro a night per head including two meals a day.

Napareuili is a quiet, charming village. There are a couple of shops and plenty of easy walks across tracks dividing up the fields. A car or a bike would be essential to get you further afield. There are no other restaurants in the village that I know of, so you have to eat at the winery or go to Telavi. It is about 15 minutes' drive to Telavi, along a lovely tree-lined avenue. Napareuili is in a great location in the valley with respect to the various attractions you can see.

The rooms themselves are comfortable, modern, clean and all have en-suites. The two drawbacks I experienced when I was there were that there were no wardrobes, and the shower hoses kept on falling off their hooks. The latter was a bit disappointing in view of the price paid per night, but I would say all the other advantages and attractions greatly outweighed it.

The winery staff are very friendly. None of them was a native English speaker when I was there. They did get in a young man each morning who was able to act as a fair interpreter, but it was much easier to communicate in Russian. If you don't speak Russian or Georgian, you might be put off staying here because of the language barrier. I would say if you have a slight spirit of adventure, you should go for it anyway, as the staff are so friendly and I think they will find a way to make communication work!

At the time of writing this review, Tripadvisor had not added the website or contact details. Googling the name will bring up the website, which has pages in Georgian and English.

To get to the winery take the route into Napereuili from Telavi, and take the first left dirt track as soon as you have passed the two shops. If you get to the police station you have missed the turn. The winery is at the end of the track on the right.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room when you book
