Sunrise Tropical Resort
Ranked #3 of 12 Hotels in Railay Beach
Reviewed 26 April 2014

Rooms - Spacious, above average but leaking.
Balcony has a small pond which has no
purpose besides being a habitat for
mosquito larvae.
Lots of mosquitoes, hotel provides electronic
repellents, but not very efficient

Surroundings - lots of trees, gardens, adequate pool
Beach at East Railay is non existent
But you can walk to West Railay and
Pranang beach for less than 15minutes
Quiet and private

Food - breakfast buffet is average
Ala carte menu is authentic Thai and delicious
Dont commit the same mistake that we did by
exploring outside of the hotel. Its either too
expensive, service is slow or food which is not
restaurant quality.

Staff - definitely with Thai Smile
Attentive, accomodating and hospitable

Location - Central to almost everything essential.
Right infront of the long tail boat service,
near the walkways to West Railay
few meters walk to Pranang beach
convenience store in the resort

No fitness area
Expensive tours
No areas for children

We stayed at Sunrise Tropical in January during our visit to Thailand. Except for beach view from the lobby, there is nothing good to write about this hotel:
1. The room size was small. It seems they expect guests to stay in the bathroom. A lot of space was wasted.
2. The a/c leaked. Thank god! we didnt keep any of our items on the table otherwise it would have been soaking wet.
3. To relax, the resort has kept two chairs outside but they were broken and the lighting was so poor that we actually felt unsafe sitting outside.
4. The breakfast was not that great and the wifi in the lobby wasn't great as well, wifi was not available in the rooms.
5. The hotel staff was OK
6. Food was bad, we had to look for options in other hotels to eat.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel unless its the last option available.

We arrived to Railay on the west after a 20min long tail boat from Ao Nang. We found Sunrise Tropical easy enough to find which is just a short 10min (although very hot) walk to the east. Everything is well sign posted. On arrival we were presented with a fruit juice and cold flannel. We stayed in a tropical chalet which was very clean, spacious and nicely air conditioned. Although the beach on this side isn't as nice as the west or particularly Phrang Nang we found the east much better at night in terms of restaurants and bars without being noisy. Would definitely visit again.

Loved the hotel itself - beautiful rooms, monkeys in the trees, amazing location and excellent value. SUITCASES + BOATS = DISASTER?! If you can't carry it through the water, don't take it to Railay.

When we first arrived we had to wait for about 2 hours and we were both ill and tired, this wait was annoying as I had put in the 'special requests' that we would be early and I hoped they might accommodate. However check in time is clearly stated and that was our problem, fair enough.
When we got to the room I was overwhelmed by how nice it was as all that was forgotten about.

Loved the place, loved the hotel, be conscious of cleanliness and food hygiene as we both got extremely ill but we ate among numerous places.

One bad thing, was the AWFUL service at dinner in the hotel. The staff playing on their phones and talking to each other blatantly forgot about us despite being one of two people in the restaurant - we were trying to get there attention for MORE THAN 30 MINS. This meant no drinks, no desert and we were in a hurry to meet friends. Breakfast was nice (self service, thankfully!).

Our rooms were by the pool - adjoining tropical chalet. They were beautifully appointed, spacious and the best shower we'd seen in Thailand. The beds were not as firm as some either...we all slept soundly!
The breakfast provided lots of variety and we especially enjoyed ordering our own omelettes. Although the Bain maries didn't keep much warm. We did dine in the restaurant in the evening and the food was reasonably priced and tasty. They do not serve alcohol, but you can byo.
We found staying on this side much more peaceful as boats weren't pulling up all the time as they are on the west. It is a 500m walk to the west beach for a swim, although we went swimming at Pranang cave beach most of the time. The other restaurants along the strip provide lots of variety and it's not nearly as expensive.
The service at Sunrise was outstanding. We had to leave at 6am for an early flight and they organised all transport and breakfast boxes to go. The staff were very friendly and their English was great. The only criticism was that Wi-Fi was only available in the foyer of the hotel, but this is the case with a lot of places.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the tropical chalets. They were a bit cheaper and at the front of the complex. The indiv...

Stayed in Sunrise in Feb for 4 nights. Loved the grounds and the room was fine. Pool area is small but there was always a sunbed available and it gets a lovely breeze. Breakfast was fine. Had the seafood kebab on 2 nights for dinner- lovely.
My only negatives are the unfriendly service from the restaurant staff (experiences with other staff were excellent) and the lack of signage from the long tail boats in Railay West.
Overall it's good value for money and I would stay again.

We had such high hopes for this hotel but unfortunately the most impressive thing during our stay was the breakfast. They had such a large selection of fresh fruits, Thai food, western food, veggies, cereals, breads, sweets and several teas and juices that it was impossible not to find something you loved. The guest service was decent but what really disappointed us was the location. Getting there was much more difficult than anticipated. Almost all boats except for very rare instances will drop you off on the west side of the island. The hotel does not have clear signs directing you the right way. We found ourselves taking what seemed to be the only path available where the boat dropped us off. To keep it short it was the worst walk we had to take in Thailand. It seemed to take forever to reach the hotel through the winding roads and it was on our second day there that we discovered a much more direct route further down the island connecting both east and west. The hotel could definitely do a better job of advising guests on how to reach it from Railay west. Lastly the rooms themselves were okay, not really what you would expect from a place that calls itself a spa. They were large and spacious but lacked in maintenance. The bathrooms in particular were not up to par with our expectations. Unless this place gets renovated and a greet upon arrival service I would not stay here again.
