Sand Sea Resort
Ranked #4 of 13 Hotels in Railay Beach
Reviewed 8 October 2007

We stayed at the Sand Sea in July of 2007 and came away with a mixed review of Railay beach. The good part was the location which is amazing and one of our favorite places on our month long trip.

The only bad part was the hotel which had bugs in the bed and all over the bathroom (we are not overly fussy travellers but having dozens of ants in your shower was not what we were expecting for 2100baht per night). We had light bulbs burnt out in our room so it was dark and smelled musty.

After changing rooms we realized the door on our new bungalow was warped enough from the frame that someone could reach in and unlock the door if they were ambitious enough.

One thing we noticed is that the more expensive rooms (we were into one of them) appeared to be in much better shape. If we had stayed in one of those our experience might have been better -- but probably not by much since the service and attitude of the staff is awful. If someone was planning on booking a regular room from this hotel I would strongly discourage them from doing so.

From our experience the service, food and rooms at the Railay Bay resort next door was far superior and we would not hesitate to book here if we come back.

Railay is great... the Sand Sea Resort was not!

--unfriendly staff
--the wanted to place us in a bungalow near a building site ('building is finished") whicht it obviously wasn't. hence there was a notice at reception saying they are sorry for the noise.

--when we entered the room the dust bin was not emptied. the aircon made a terrible noise and the interior of the bungalow was more in a darkish colour.

--bathroom was so-so but not okay for the price.

--dirty pond

-->wouldnt stay there again nor wouldnt stay at railay beach again due to the loads of waste all over the place and the generators in the middle between the two beaches.

-->people seemed to be less friendly than in the rest of thailand but that may have been due to my non-objective krabi sands experience...

We stayed at the Sand and Sea for 5 nights in the low season (we got really lucky with weather) and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We stayed in the most superior room (a/c, right next to pool with ocean view) which i highly recommend if the price works for you. While we were there we checked out the other hotels (including the very expensive Rayavadee) and found that we would rather be at the Sand and Sea than the others, no matter the price, because the atmosphere was so low key while the room was gorgeous and so comfortable (however, i don't know if we would have felt this same way in anything other than our level of room). We enjoyed being on the west/quiet side of the penninsula with the option of going to the east side for food and fun (a very short walk away). The food at Sand and Sea was very disappointing (especially the lunch and dinner) with most food being fried, so we ate the breakfast (included) at Sand and Sea and ate our other meals elsewhere (mostly next door at the Railay Bay Hotel).

We stayed here for 2 nights in April. Unfortunately we had to switch rooms while we stayed here because they were so busy. The first room was a fan concrete bungalow for 1950 baht. The room was fine and as a person who almost always stays in Air-con rooms, the fan was great. The second room was way at the back of the property right near the generator, and was much smaller and not a bungalow. However it had air-con and was only 1900 baht. We were a little spectical of the room and thought that we might be kept awake by the generator, but in fact it was fine. Both rooms had hot showers and cable tv, and came with buffet breakfast. The pool was really nice and the beach at Railay is beautiful! Orginally we had reservations to stay at a place in Ton Sai, but on arrival we immediately disliked the place. Backpacker extreme, dirty beach, and the trapped feeling.
Note: most of the aircon rooms here are bungalows and rent out for 3500 baht a night. They don't even advertise the 3 aircon rooms at the back of the property that we ended up staying at, so just ask for them. For 1900 baht on Railay beach, we would definately stay here again!

Fantastic location on West Railay beach - literally 50 yds from where the longtail drops off. We had a standard concrete bungalow with fan (basic but adequate) set amongst lovely well kept gardens. Breakfast was included but a bit disappointing. However the food on the menu for lunch/dinner was lovely. We preferred staying and sunbathing on the quieter west side and the more lively (bars and nightlife) backpacker east side were only a 10 minute walk away.

The surroundings we're beautiful but for 2000BHT a night you'd expect a bit more than this hotel has to offer.

We stayed in a standard bungalow with fan and found that air-condition would have been better since the fan wasn't able to cool the air enough. Also the bungalow was a bit dark, not too comfortable looking but clean and ok for a couple of night's stay.

Pool area was lovely, although some of the residents had an annoying habit of booking the sun chairs with towels while they went for a dinner or somewhere else.

Breakfast was good and tasty and it was lovely to eat it in front of the beautiful beach. We also had one lunch there. The food was ok but service not. Also no alcohol provided if a cold Singha-beer is what you're after.

Servive at the reception however was very friendly and quick.

We stayed at the sand sea resort from 17/11/06 - 21/11/06 this was the start of our holiday in krabi.
Upon arriving we were met at the airport by a sandsea employee who whisked us off to Ao Nang beach where we were met by a longtail boat to take us to west railay beach. this was a fantastic experience as it was about 10pm so it was pitch black as we set off across the sea. (Be warned you will get the bottoms of your legs wet getting on and off the longtail boat).
We checked in without any hassles and found our room. We booked a standard fan bungalow and found the fan to be more than ample for cooling the room.
The room was rather small and the bathroom smelt a little but i suppose you get what you pay for.
We had breakfast included which was varied and plentyfull each day with a choice of both western and aisian.
The pool area is ok but does not have many sun loungers to meet the demand of guests and if your not there early there's little chance of getting one as most have towels over them but have no one on them!!!

Time for the negatives i encountered during my stay. Firstly there is alot of building work going on on the back of the first lot of bungalows with the sound of industrial saws going etc.
So if its peace and quiet your looking for i would give this resort a miss untill you have guarantees the work is finished.

We also found the staff not to be as friendly as we have experienced in thailand in the past. On one occasion whilst enjoying our evening meal a waiter came over to our table and started to look at his watch as it was nearly 10:30pm and informed me that i would have to settle my bill as the restaurant would be shutting shortly. I found this to be extremely rude and never bothered to eat there again.

So in retrospect would i stay here again i'm not sure!!! The location is stunning and i feel that the resort uses this a little too much in it's favour. If they could iron out the little problems such as training staff better etc the sand sea would be a excellent base for your holiday. However after 4 nights i was glad to move on.
