Railay Bay Resort & Spa

We spent four nights in Railay bay in June just after the curfew was lifted but tourism had been greatly affected by then and there were very few tourists on the island, the weather unfortunately turned bad and there was nothing to do during this time as all activities centre around boat trips and the fine beaches, apart from that our hotel- which was expensive for Thailand was poor, staff were totally disinterested in their guests and there was generally a lot of neglect to the property, our room was not cleaned and after three days we had to ask them to come in and sort it out and it was still grubby after the fact. would not recommend this hotel.

We stayed four nights here as the third destination in our andaman adventures itinerary of the region, all the way from Koh Lipe to Phuket. The Railay Bay delivered perfectly. We didn’t go out much since our room and the resort’s large grounds had everything we wanted. That includes the large beachside swimming pool. A+ cocooning , recommended !

Room Tip: we had a "privacy cottage", could not ask for more !

#1; For clarification: do what my title states. That alleviates ALOT of stress prior to arrival. Tides constantly changing but are generally high in the early morning. Check the internet. #2: know what you are buying. Only the privacy cottages and the Pool villas are sincerely on the west side but the rooms and deluxe cottages are on the east or in the middle - you get what you pay for. Regardless it is a 1 minute walk from one end to the next- so I think it is trivial to complain. My theory is that people are just sooo frustrated with their arrival by longtail and initial disspointment of their room location, that they leave bad reviews. I think that is an injustice to the readers and the resort. We had none of this stress because we planned for the East peir arrival and knew what we bought ahead of time. The deluxe cottaged are clean, modern, spacious, and beautiful. The walk was not an issue - like i said, its just 60 seconds. The 2nd pool is right in the middle and the main pool is on the ocean - they are both beautiful and very well kept. The entire resort is very clean and immaculately manicured/well kept and you can use the gym and pool at their equally beautiful location Railay Princess on the east side, two hotels down. Breakfast is the same as the other 4 and 5 stars we stayed at in Thailand - a variety of Thai and Western with eggs any way. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. In Railay: you must go to Pranang Beach - it's where the big rock sticks out into the ocean - AMAZING - and there is a longhair parked there thg has surprisingly great food for cheap. The 5 minute trek there is through a cavernous forms with hungry little monkeys all over. Close your bags and only fees them (if u dare) near the little shop at the start that sells corn. The owner stands there with an empty sling shot to deter them from gettin too close. Eat at Mangrove - its the best! Drinks and small fireshow at The Last Bar. Tonsai beach has cool little hippie hangouts and cheap drinks. Take a boat out to snorkel and see the surrounding small island. Or, sit at the beach pool and enjoy the cool breezes in the evening:)

We stayed 3 nights in a privacy cottage during low season, and loved having our own little patio/garden to hang out in. The resort has several pools that can be used and is a short walk to shops and food on either west or east beach. We preferred to eat outside the hotel [cheaper and better] but enjoyed the central location and quiet privacy.

Having read the reviews before I visited the hotel, I was prepared. The reviews were right. The hotel is in need of updating/upgrading. The pool area is badly maintained including collecting empty glasses/bottles etc. breakfast was poor. Evening meals however were excellent. In some reviews, people criticised the staff, however, I found them all lovely and helpful. One big error for me was they ran out of white wine on 4 days out of 7. Railay has become far more commercialised than my previous visit, far more tourists but it is a beautiful location so hardly surprising. The hotel is reasonably priced, but I would expect the bathroom to at least feel clean.

The hotel area is huge and spans from East to West Railey. As such, your room may very well not be beach front. However, the beach front itself is beautiful and the restaurant location very good.
The reception staff is however horrible. My friend got food poisoning and asked for a late check out. They could agree to no more than 1 hour (1 pm instead of noon), even though the hotel was half empty. That is both insensitive and frankly amateur like behavior.
On similar notes, room service, cleaning and the like was almost ramdom. Seems there is no real management at the hotel.
I will stay elsewhere on my next visit.

Room Tip: As close to Railay west as possible. The hotel is huge, so you can potentially be on either beach.

I wish that we would have combed through more reviews before booking this place. There are nicer places to stay on this peninsula-but on the east side for a fraction of the price. We were told the way to get there (from airport) was via long boat from Au Nang-but were totally shocked when we realized that meant hauling our rolling suitcases over the sandy beach, carrying them over our heads through water and then onto the boat (good thing our shoes were waterproof and that it didn't matter about our clothes)-doubly shocked when we realized we had to do the same once we arrived at Railay West. When we got to the reception (again through water and sandy beach with our rolling suitcases) and then were driven (via golf cart) to our room that we thought was going to be on Railay West, we thus found out that it was 2 rows back from Railay East-even though we were paying Railay West prices to stay there. When we went back to the reception to tell them about this they were quite indifferent, although they said we could 'upgrade' for another $45/night. Beware, future travelers that this 'resort' is misleading in that half of the rooms are closer to Railay east than west. We also later found out that if we had arrived originally via Railay East that there was a little dock to walk on as well as sometimes a tractor to meet arriving guests. We ended up moving the other nights to another nicer resort (in fact on Railay east), where they were polite and helpful, for a fraction of the price. While the pool is nice at this resort and the beach on Railay West beautiful, I do not recommend staying here.
