Excellent two night stay. On bed and breakfast basis everything fantastic. I have stayed in Norwich before and this was easily the best hotel by far. I would love to stay there for a whole week on a full board basis.

This is a beautiful hotel with great facilities but check you have the room you expect. We booked a Friday night at the last (2 hours before) minute amd opted for the Superior Room. On arrival we were checked in to room 509 which, whilst ok, wasn't superior. Bathroom very tired and in need of a good clean and refurb. On checking with the nice guy on reception it turned out 509 is a standard room as they had no superiors left. The rate reflected this but would have been nice to know before going to the room.

The hotel was very busy with golfers, hen parties and two weddings so the bar was rammed. However all the staff were great and breakfast was up to the De Vere high standard. Spa offered good service.

All over a nice stay just a shame about the room.

Dear suggyd
Many thanks for your feedback-You`re absolutely right we are a very popular hotel for various groups as well as couples. We have lots of space available so theres always enough space to go around and enough of our team to give that famous Devere service.Do come back and experience it again soon
kind regards

All I can say is,rooms fine, ours was large with 2 big single beds, food was ok,big choice so could find something you would like to eat.The staff were always trying to help, and all problems were sorted out very well.As a golf destination I would say Dunston Hall is ok,the course was looking a bit tired but that was due to the lack of rain and not to the efforts of the ground staff.I was surprised at how well we were looked after,as my opinion of De vere hotels in general is very poor.Mottram Hall being the worst of a poor lot (stayed there in early May on a one night stay,Belton woods almost as bad).

Have just returned from a one night stay, with some friends on a golf and spa package.I appreciate that the hotel was. extremely busy on Saturday ,however the check in experience was horrendous.Long wait with large queues,no contact for reception staff with housekeeping,In general we felt that the hotel was understaffed, had to wait 20 mins for a cup of coffee, left on the bar to get cold!Room very hot and stuffy, small window ,poor mattress. If eating in the carvery,DO NOT eat late ,food dry and luke warm.Staff faultless at table ,nice decor but poor poor food.

Like many of these large hotels desperate to fill bedrooms and function seats, Dunston Hall has to be all things to all people in order to make money. My wife and I stayed for two nights for a family wedding reception and I was initially disappointed: very poor welcome at Reception, no offer of help with luggage, a room impossible to find in endless corridors. However, the suite we had booked was lovely, even if it did have scuffed woodwork, crudely polyfilla-filled holes in walls, frayed furniture and a bathroom fan not working (reported to Reception - no feedback). The main issue (and we heard this repeated by local Norwich people) is the clientèle: while many very pleasant ordinary people use this hotel, there is a rough element attending evening functions we found unwelcome - coarse and vulgar teens and twenty-somethings, sporting aggressive tattoos, wearing singlets and flip-flops in the dining room, bawling in the entrance etc. Smoking is a problem: the Reception and corridors smell of cigarette smoke from fag-hags puffing away just outside doors, including the health spa! Smokers literally pack the main (very beautiful) entrances; they should be shoved round the back as they create a very poor initial impression of the tone of the place. The lack of personal direction is striking: no-one seems to chivvy the place along; it needs a dragon on the staff somewhere! The hotel would do well to appoint a doorman to insist on standards and to set a simple dress-code to deter oafish appearance. With those measures in place this hotel could be very good indeed. Italian hotels of a similar classification would never put up with such sloppiness.

Room Tip: Our suite was expensive but delightful, worth it as a treat.

Stayed for three nights on a heavily discounted rate but couldn't shake the feeling that I was only just getting value for money as the place needs some investment to really bring it up to the standard that the location and building deserve.

The room was clean but somewhat tired with the bathroom in particular needing some work. The bed was rather uncomfortable and the mattress was obviously somewhat aged. Unfortunately, neither my wife or I slept well during our stay.

The bar area is quite dark and dull and more than a little dated now. I wouldn't want to see an ultra modern bar in what is a splendid old building but it is clear to me that an upgrade would really bring this excellent space to life.

On the positive side of things, the staff were very friendly and efficient and went out of their way to give us advice about local attractions etc. Breakfast was good with a wide variety to choose from and despite being busy you didn't feel rushed at all.

The spa was clean and seemed well maintained when I visited. It is worth pointing out that two regular guests raved about the staff who, in their opinion, are the main reason for them returning to the hotel again and again.

Finally, the building itself is beautiful and the country setting is excellent. Many of Norfolk's attractions are in easy striking distance as well.

It really is a shame that the hotel hasn't had the level of investment of some of the other De Vere hotels. I have been to Cameron House at Loch Lomond and I have seen what can be done by the company. If Dunstan Hall received a similar level of investment it would make a spectacular difference. Unfortunately, until this is done, I would not consider returning.

I am not one to dish out 5 stars for everything or to argue that everyone who disagrees with me can't have stayed in the same place, but I really do struggle to understand some of the negative things about this place. I have just returned from a 2-day stay there and absolutely loved it.

There is an undoubted 'wow' factor in driving down the approach to see this Victorian take on an Elizabethan mansion. But the inside was not the disappointment that some seemed to feel. It is quite plush, with friendly and helpful staff, decent sized rooom and, at the price of £68 per night for a double that I got online, excellent breakfast included, an absolute steal.

After a rather mediocre salad at lunch, our expectations for dinner were not high. However, the option of a £20 themed three-course meal or carvery, with one child eating free for each paying adult, was exceptionally good value. The Italian on the first night was a lot better than the carvery on the second and sometimes the service got slow because of the high occupancy, but these are minor details and I would feel petty quibbling anything.

It is mainly a golf hotel and I can't comment on the course, but it does make for lovely grounds in which to walk our dog - it is both child- and dog-friendly, which is not that common in golf hotels. The pool and gym are also well above average.
