“Excellent staff, but hotel needs investment,”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

This was a one night stay, whilst visiting the local area. We had mixed feelings booking the hotel, given the rather varied reviews, but it was a late booking and there wasn’t much in the way of alternatives.
The positives: There were plenty of staff (and management team) present at all times. They were all very friendly and helpful – service at reception and in the restaurant was first class. The bars and restaurant were a little ‘tired’ but generally very pleasant. The grounds are excellent, there is a top class golf course and plenty of parking.
The ‘less than positive’: Our room had the benefit of what looked like a relatively new carpet and a nice TV with lots of channels. Sadly, everything else was really poor. The room was boiling (despite fans attempting to move the air a bit – a lost cause due to a tiny window opening). The bed had a truly awful mattress, that was either very cheap or well past retirement. The bathroom was grim – the housekeepers had clearly given it a superficial clean, but age and probably too many superficial cleans meant there was black fungus in places, the showerhead was badly seized up with calcium deposits and the toilet just smelt.
The leisure centre must have been amazing at some point, but like the rooms, it has been ‘let go’ and needs major investment to update. It really does seem as though DeVere have given up and are looking to dispose of the place.
The staff really were the only thing that stopped our stay being a bit of a disaster. They somehow manage to still create a bit of a positive atmosphere. The stay was quite cheap, but in all honesty, we would happily have paid more to stay in the hotel if it had some investment.

Room Tip: Avoid the standard rooms if you can. Particularly those in the 600/612 range. These rooms get very h...

We booked golf break for two couples (2 golf widows) and we all had a great stay. The fellas enjoyed 2great rounds of golf and the girls enjoyed the pool. The park and ride is just Down the road witch makes going into Norwich City centre really easy. The menu in the bunker bar was varied with large portions. We had dinner in the brasserie and enjoyed great service. The only draw back was that we were on the third floor and there was no air con, so room was very warm!

We booked a family room for the weekend, no aircon and on entering the room it was like a sauna, the room was a decent size but in need of refurbishment, the beds looked like they had been sat on or used before us. The bathroom did not look particularly clean, the bath was old and the enamel was coming off. The shower badly needed de scaling. We used the pool which was ok, but very stuffy and strange lighting. We ended up checking out a day early, mainly because of the heat of the bedroom

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

Just back from a weekend break with 19 golfers...great course (plenty of water to negotiate), good food and great staff! I got a room upgrade as the organiser...little touches that make the trip even better! Good value with the 20% off other food and bar bills. Don't hesitate to book a break here!

Room Tip: Lower floor "upgrade rooms" have air con which was a must with the recent hot weather we...

Last year I took my girlfriend to Dunston Hall for her Birthday and we had an absolutely amazing time- I couldn't fault the level of service, food, rooms or the grounds. So we decided to come back again for a two day trip on the 31st July to celebrate her birthday again. Looking at the previous posts all I can say is faded glory indeed.

We paid upfront £295 for two nights dinner and breakfast inclusive and were shocked to find that for a 4* hotel we had a room that we simply couldn't stay in for the level of money paid:

-There was no air conditioning- and the room was like a sauna.
-The window latch was broken so we couldn't even open the window.
-There were about three spiders nests and cob webs everywhere- after clearing out two of the nests I gave up.
- The bath room tiles were a state- filthy.
- The panel on the bath was peeling off.
- The furniture was dated and had scratches- generally worn.
- The telephone line didn't connect to reception.
- The floor tiles in the bath room had cracked.
- The room had two large butter fly's that we couldn't let out due to the broken window
- The carpet had deep stains and was generally dirty.
- The sheets weren't in the best condition either.

After calling reception on my mobile I was advised that they could send someone up to clean the room and we could be upgraded on the second day but not the first as they were full. We were too disgusted that we actually left the hotel after ten mins of arrival!!

We got the full amount refunded, however, this didn't take into account the sheer inconvenience of the trip. We were given a cheap bottle of rose champagne as an apology- which tasted awful- adding to the sour taste of the experience. On a positive note the staff were apologetic and fairly helpful but there was very little they could do to re-assure us that we were getting value for our money- the room looked like a worn down 2* b and b room- un loved.

We drove from Sudbury (Suffolk/Essex) to Norwich for a special birthday experience. I worked over time to have a half day in order to get to the hotel early to enjoy the gardens and spa.

In the end we couldn't find anywhere at such short notice so we ended up going home. This completely ruined my partners 34th B-day and as most of our plans were centred around the swimming pool/spa and golf range we were completely infuriated by the whole experience and left high and dry.

Dunston- you need to invest more money in ALL of your rooms and ensure that a manager or senior staff member checks the rooms after they have been cleaned for quality assurance.

Very disappointed

Positives:

Location, architecture, and staff.

Negatives:

The rooms were lovely...in 1986, when I suspect they were last refurbished.

No aircon, so you're sleeping in an oven.

Everywhere is festooned with cobwebs and spiders, threadbare carpets, wallpaper hanging off, mouldy bathrooms and the general air of somewhere unloved.

Think of it as a large tatty old style Travelodge hidden inside a Gothic mansion.

Sorry to say, but avoid this place until DeVere spend some money on it.
