“Very very disappointing... do not be lured by the deals on offer!!!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2009

You have to wonder why such a 'fantastic' hotel is constantly offering deals on their rooms... well, we should have known better. Poor rooms, below average food, rude staff.
We first stayed at Dunstan hall in late November 2008. It was seriously one of the most disappointing hotel stays my partner or I have experienced. Sadly, approaching the beautiful building along the grand driveway- sets expectations which are sorely undelivered. The room itself was damp and shabby- perhaps leaning towards luxury over 20 years ago. The bathroom offered little consolation, slight mould and damp- giving a weary, tired look overall. We ate at the in-house restaurant that night and for spending over £100 expected an above average meal. Although the service was adequate- the meal itself was below average. The starter of quail being dry, bony and miserable looking. My partners second of lamb was acceptable enough, but sadly the duck I ordered was tasteless and lacking the unctuous flavour you may have grown to expect. To be fair dessert was very good- but sadly could not save the meal.
The worse part of our stay was the room itself which housed a very faulty venting system which made the worse racket all night. When we rang to see what could be done, we were dismissed as if this was of no importance. After trying to sleep for a further two hours, we called down for some ear plugs- only to be told by a mocking employee to ‘get some toilet paper and shove it in our ears!!!! Almost hilarious Fawlty Towers style- if it wasn’t happening there and then. Breakfast the next day was buffet style which mirrored the slop from a school camp- terrible.

On return home, I called the hotel manager to voice my incredible disappointment. We were offered a return night stay (in an upgraded room) for a token price. He assured us that our stay was not typical and that on our return we would be pleasantly surprised. Well, the room (a suite) was much nicer- but sadly still felt cold, damp and worn. Service was still below average. We ordered room service breakfast the next day- hoping this may be the better option. WRONG!! The same terrible standard. Super large portions that lacked any resemblance of taste or freshness. It is actually an insult to be offered a bed and breakfast stay with such alarmingly poor food served.

So… both stays were terrible. Better if the manager hadn’t tried to convince us back- as it only cemented our overall disappointment.
Would not recommend. Warning: Do not get lured by the deals on offer….

Visited with some friends for a one night golf break. Weather was superb which naturally makes one much happier. Wonderful building and approach up the long driveway. Golf course was in excellent condition, we played two rounds and the course is outstanding for a hotel, great greens and well maintained.

Location is good, just off the Norwich by-pass so easy access to the coast and Broads. Room was fine, two double beds and to a good standard. We stayed on a Sunday night, the premium La Fontaine restaurant was closed, so we ate in the Brasserie which is apparently more relaxed. The food was disappointing, the Hors d'Oeuvres buffet was particularly poor with little choice and the menu itself, whether a la carte or the inclusive "menu", was very limited. Three of the four of us went for the carvery - which was very good, but it was a carvery and a hotel of this standard should do better than that for the price.

Wine selection was good but no "House Wine" option for those that might want it. Prices were on the high side.

Breakfast choice was good.

We didn't visit the pool area, but another visitor said it was excellent.

The terrace area is splendid, especially with the afternoon sun.

We booked the De-Vere special offer 2 nights Bed & Breakfast with Dinner on the 1st night.

After seeing some of the reviews we arrived with some in trepidation. The welcome from reception was warm and courteous and all the staff we meet after that where polite and friendly.

The room was large enough, clean and the bed was comfortable. The room was cool on entry but turned up the radiator and the room soon warmed up. My only criticism of the room would be no main central light the room was never brightly light even with all the lights on and only 1 bedside light.

The food on the whole was okay nothing special.

The Gym and Pool where okay.

We both enjoyed the hotel and felt we had value for money

Amazing, period property and extensive, beautiful grounds, very good golf course, if you play, we dont. Some problems with what had booked re.room and various issues re.room and in hotel, did get some sorted, however far from ideal. Bear in mind this is one of the De vere 's deluxe hotels. Fitness and spa facilities and staff great, the Lilac room, treatments and staff are excellent. Norwich is a great city, have been to before.

  • Liked — Style, grounds, and the jacuzzi, pool steam room and lilac room
  • Disliked — Blowing out cold air in many areas? it was mid winter and snowing. Fontaine restuarant was closed on Sunday evening and we had booked dinner, no one had told us, we were allocated the Brasserie - all of which was mediocre. Need to get more supplies in , various had run out?!

I have recently stayed at Dunston with my husband and my 2 children. The location was really ideal for us and the hotel is frankly stunning!!! All the staff were more than friendly and polite, they went their way to ensure that our stay was agreable. The food was excellent and we felt very welcome from the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out. We will definately come back here and we do highly recommend this place because it really was "The Life".

  • Liked — The Space and the comfort of the bed
  • Disliked — nothing

Both the staff and hotel rooms were cold. The hotel make no effort to ensure that your stay is special so do not arrive with the expectations that are advertsied on their website: "warmth...sense of belonging...you wont want to leave". The hotel and staff are a dissapointment. This is not somewhere that I would reccomend.

Stayed at the De Vere Dunston a number of times in 2008 as business trips took me to Norwich.

Its a bit of a hike out of Norwich - probably fifteen to twenty minutes in a taxi - so not highly recommended if you want to get out and about in the city and then roll up to your hotel late at night.

That said, its perfectly acceptable. The staff are polite and attentive, and while the rooms are a little dated in their decor, everything works as it should.

The best dining option is undoubtedly La Fontaine - the main restaurant. The bar food (Bunkers and The Brasserie) and room service are somewhat uninspired and not great value.

There are better places to stay when in and around Norwich, but Dunston is fine for a short trip.

  • Liked — Nice location, good grounds
  • Disliked — Dated decor in the rooms
