Dunston Hall
Reviewed 11 August 2009

Just returned from a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend at Dunston Hall. I have to say we were very pleasantly surprised with the standard of service from all the staff. The hotel and surrounding area is lovely and although I agree with some of the comments regarding the food, overall there was plenty to eat and we enjoyed every meal. Our room was very comfortable and the facilities good. You will not be disappointed if you are going on a short break!!!!

dunston hall is a nice hotel situated about a ten minute drive outside norwich, the drive in is very impressive as you weave down a long gravel track to the hotel and ajoining golf course.

the staff here are very effiecient and friendly but somewhat formal with it as well.

the rooms are of a decent size, very clean although a little dated for my tastes

there are 2 good bars one being the golf club which is well equiped with snooker table and large screen tv showing various sporting events.

the one thing that lets dunston hall down is the very dated food, during the week i stayed there we had the same 3 meats on the carvery every nite.
although we did not get to try their ala carte restaurant which is like the bar, quite pricey.

all in all though it is a fantastic place where you definately get a class above the all to common travel lodges

We went to the hotel with some friends. The positive aspects for us were the hotel location and ground, the room (OK for the price we paid) and the good service in the bar.

The main area for improvement is with the food. The carvery was OK but not worth the money and ordering off the a la carte menu (I think this was supposed to be cooked to order) resulted in the food being bought to the table within 5 minutes. Also had some problems getting the correct bill at the end of the evening.

The hotel probably gets a lot of its trade from weddings and other functions and therefore has to produce food is large quantities. Even so, I am sure there is room from improvement.

When we checked out I was going to say something when we got to the standard ‘did you enjoy your stay’ question. We were not asked this and, as far as I can tell, no one else was in the 20 minutes we were in the lobby.

We booked into this hotel for 1 nights stay and were thoroughly disappointed. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and has a lovely setting but the standards drop as soon as you step inside. The hotel is trapped in a time warp - it's interior is seriously shabby with wallpaper hanging off the walls and we found a big hole in our bedroom wall. There were stains on the carpets and all over the walls. We arrived to our bedroom which we had paid nearly £200 for a basic room and found pubic hairs in the bathroom on all over the floor - the cleaners obviously don't 'clean' and there were cobwebs too just to top it off. After calling down to reception to request a room change we were moved to another room which unfortunately wasn't much better- i walked in to find a pair of fake eyelashes on the carpet beside the bed and crumbs all over the floor! I honestly cannot believe the cleaners get away with this! Its disgusting. After all this i wasn't particularly looking froward to getting into the bed as i seriously questioned the cleanliness of this hotel and we later realised there was no air con so on a warm night it was really uncomfortable. Such a shame as this hotel really could be amazing considering the grounds and setting but i will never go to a de vere hotel again after this.

Stayed here with friends for 4 nights.

Position: About 2 miles from centre of Norwich, but a straight forward trip into the city. Maybe 25 miles to the coast and in the middle of some pleasant countryside.
Imposing Manor House with a golf course attached.

Reception: Helpful and happy. Had to report the fan not working in our friends room. Nothing changed for 4 days. Still not working when we left. Room staff forgot to leave some milk. Reported that and it was there before we got back to the room!!

Dining: Two restaurants. A posh one that only those on expense accounts and trying to impress their partners would go to, and a Carvery which was more than adequate. We only stayed in for one meal and it was very nice. Breakfast is excellent. That again is buffet but you can order things like porridge, kippers and eggs Benedctine etc. All staff in here were great and nothing too much trouble.

Rooms: Light and airey. Good sized bathroom. Very clean. Friendly room staff who were happy to help if you were something short. For example, there were 2 extra pillows in the wardrobe but no pillow cases on them. Spoke to staff and they arrived within moments. No complaints at all.

Bars: The usual hotel rip off that encourages people to smuggle their own hip flasks in!! 2 glassses of wine and 2 single house brandies =£22.50. Make your own minds up about that!!

Leisure facilities: Went to pool and whirlpool. Both had pleasent atmosphere. There is also a steam room and a sauna. And don't forget the golf course

General: Seemed rather more buisiness people in than holidaymakers. If you can get it at the right price, have a hipflask that will fit in a handbag.and don't mind paying over the odds for food then this is the place for you. I would certainly go again if I ever went to that part of the country.

Having visited Dunstan Hall 29 times over a number of years, our recent stay was excellent. A friendly welcome followed by good food and excellent service was followed by a pleasant round of golf.
The reviews of 2005 are completely out of date. Much refurbishment has taken place and it's now a very good venue.

Don't be fooled by the pictures - This isn't a luxury Country House hotel. What it is, is a mass Conference, Banqueting, Golfing Hotel, clothed in good looking pseudo tudor brickwork with a decent spa. Food is mass catering, but staff efficient. Biggest problems are the iffy heating/ventilation and the high prices for drink and food .. Apart from breakfast I recommend you eat @ the Wildebeest Arms a mile away
