Nobody wants to get up at 3am on their holiday - but wow, it was worth it ! The sunrise was spectacular ! We saw the dolphins in natural environment ( even though there were probably 100 boats out there ) . Then onto the National Park, where the water falls were amazing, the foliage unbelievable and the environment pristine. Of course, as in most of Bali, you can expect hawkers trying to sell you spices and t.shirts along the walking tracks, but aside from that, it was peaceful and tranquil.
Next trip to Bali, we will stay in Lovina for a couple of nights so that we get the opportunity to fully explore this beautiful part of Bali.

Hate Kuta?? Then Lovina is the real Bali. Friendly people, good prices- meals are much cheaper up there compared to the Kuta/Legian area. Lots to do or just chill out.

Lovina looks like (and has a stigma) of being a sleepy town that has seen its better days in the 80s when back packers, Hippies, and magic mushroom gourmets had blown life into the local fishing community around "Lov-ina Bay". But you'd be surprised: after 2000 a whole lot of long-term-tourists or Semi-residents have settled around Lovina, and brought new life into a local community. The new life is a very different lifestyle from the Seventies -it is modern comfort, wireless Internet, pools and dive shops. World-Cuisine: Thai, Japanese, Italian, Western.. And there is night life ! Life music in 4 different Bars. But the BEST of Lovina is when you go out -east and west.. 5 to 20 km to the west of Lovina (Seririt, Ume Anyar, Munduk, Kalisada) -that's what western settlers have discovered: the natural Bali, perhaps the real Bali ? Without the make-up of Ubud's sacral shows and endless ceremonies. The Bali that is more in balance in between people and nature. where "culture" is only a minor part of life. But nature (beyond the ceremonies and religious impacts) is time-less. Huge old trees, rice terraces, fruit plantations, grassy hills and waterfalls... all that is just "South Pacific". could be anywhere (including Hawaii) -think away the Balinese for a minute (you can do that in Buleleng / North Bali) and you are on a beautiful island. Period. Then accept the Balinese as an enrichment. Not pre-requisite. ! Why so? Because Bali's North has seen Chinese traders, Portuguese sailors, Javanese Immigrants, Dutch Administration (Buleleng was the place to arrive in Bali in pre-airplane centuries !!) and Singaraja was the capital of Bali and of 350 years Dutch ruling.
All these tribes, nations and cultures MIXED in Buleleng - accepting differences. Early Cosmopolitans ! There is no space for fanatics and rigid rule along the North Coast. You can dress the way you like, you can find magic mushrooms (still today) Karaoke Bars, Libraries, Lontar readers, Waterfalls and upmarket Villas. .. and lots of Expats (tired of Bali's South).

If you are going to Bali, don't ever miss the Dolphin Watching .. It may not be very popular yet, but it's a 5star thing to do ... You will never be dissapointed.

Beng was at our hotel at 5.45am sharp as promised. He took us on the most exciting boat ride of our lives. My friends even helped him to push his boat into the waters, all for the love of Dolphin watching ....

Once in the sea, adrenalin pumps as we wait for dolphins to surface again and again ... It was worth to lose sleep for just to catch a glimpse of these heavenly creatues. We didn't mind the countless hours of driving from Kuta and finally our arrival in Lovina was at 9pm. Stopping occasionally at tourists attractions, we managed to see the best of Bali. Dolphin watching changed my perspective on Bali. This was super fun and the best stop ever.

I will go back to Bali on a 3 hour flight and a 5 hour drive if I have to, just to enjoy the dolphin watching again ... 3 days straight as 1 day wasn't enough ... Fun, fun, fun ... See Bali through the eye of the Dolphin .. :) No regrets ...

My friend and I went to lovina beach to watch live dolphins in the sea. We moved off as early as 6am. We left our hotel at about 3am to reach to destination. It was worth the sleep and time going there because the scenery is just gorgeous along with seeing live dolphins at such close encounter. We paid RP 250 000/pax for this. Another RP 150 000 for the fish feeding. The fish feeding was optional, we felt it wasnt really worth the penny for the fish feeding.
