“Amazing”

My fiance and I absolutely loved this place. If we ever make it back, we wouldn't even look for another hotel. Staff was amazing, atmosphere was so chill, 2 pools were beautiful and clean, and our room was huge and super clean. Breakfast was great, bar made good drinks, and had plenty of bar and restaurants within 2 blocks. They even had a purified water container in the bathroom for drinking/ brushing your teeth. Could not rate this place high enough. If you need a driver to/ from airport or even around Lovina, ask hotel for Eddie, he rocked. If you wanna go dolphin watching on a boat find Dodie, in last booth inland before the main road.

Spent a fantastic 4 nights at Rambutan in the hotel part (not sure where the 'boutique hotel' comes from but basically there is a hotel part and a villa part but everyone shares same pool and restaurant). The staff are really friendly and very helpful and the breakfast was lovely. Close to the beach and easy to arrange tours at the hotel. The pool is great, needs a good clean and people have a habit of reserving loungers but since people tend not to stay long and are often doing trips, even at our peak time stay it never felt crowded and loungers would become free at some point.

Thanks for your review and we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay. Yes regarding lounge chairs around the pool, it is hard to stop people placing their towels and reserving a lounge while not using it. My suggestion is if you see the lounge is not being used for more that 20 minutes then remove the towel and use it. The Boutique means it is a small hotel and not a block hotel, so we are actually small in number of rooms but they are set in a one hectare tropical garden.

This wonderful gem near Lovina provides a well balanced offering of relaxation, opportunities for children to play, clean and well appointed accommodation, good food, access to local activities and two immaculate pools, all at a very reasonable price. When staying there, pay a visit to the superb and friendly Warung Apple, on the way to the beach.

Pleasant place to stay with small children. The pool has a baby area but even my 6 years old son enjoyed playing in the the undeep area. The tree hut and playing ground scored good as well.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we had to cut our stay at Rambutan with one night. We could only notify the owners one day before but they showed great flexibilty by selling the room to other guests and not charging us anything for this night. Quite an achievement on such a short notice. Thanks again for that.

Thank you for your write up and appreciation of our flexability. We would certainly never charge for a room if we are able to sell it again and in the off season we allow people to leave early with no extra charge. Hope to see you back soon.

Rambutan Cottages, Lovina. Downtown location in beautiful grounds, easy walking distance to limited range of local shops. Staff have good English, but everything happens slowly. Beautiful large pool by restaurant and bar. Drinks were ridiculously expensive given our location and compared to prices elsewhere, eg Rp 176,000 for two spirits. Apart from the magnificent balcony, the rooms are something else. 2* rooms in 4* grounds. Climbing the irregular steps up to our room and then entering the room felt like we were transported to somewhere in Mexico. The bathroom was the worst I have seen in a hotel; the owner should throw it out and start again. The toilet is mounted on a 150mm high pedestal, so you will need to be 6'10" tall for your feet to touch the floor. No idea why anyone would do that. The bathroom door didn't fit the frame and no shower curtain, so the floor floods. A totally impractical stone bath and painted black walls complete the ambience. Got to see to believe. Bed was also made of stone (hard foam on solid base) but the a/c was effective and the insect repellent seemed to do the trick. Mini bar was full of soft drinks and a few beers. The curtains don't offer any privacy as they don't cover the width of the window. Very noisy environment at night. The 'call to prayer' went until after 11pm and started again at 4:50am. the barking dog drowned out the rooster, until the loud birds started at 5:30am. Careful what you say in your bathroom; while in the shower I said something to my wife and my daughter in the next villa answered! It made it easier to say good morning the next day through the paper thin walls. Not sure if there is better in this area, but I will find out next time as I would not stay here again and would warn others off as well.

Room Tip: The stairs to upper rooms have large, irregular steps, which will be a struggle with luggage

I have looked at all the things you have pointed out. Regarding price of drinks, for one measure of imported spirits we charge 60,000 Rp or about USD6.00, for a large beer (two glasses) we charge USD3.5 and for soft drink, like a bottle of coke we charge .70 cents. I looked at the steps and found them to be ok and only a few slightly higher than others, so sorry if it caused you a problem. The toilet is mounted on a 50cm (not too sure what you were using to measure them with) stone as toilets in Asia are quite small. When I sat on it, my legs were bent at my knees and I’m only 5ft 11’’ or 175cm tall. Yes the bathroom door was slightly warped and we will look at fixing that. No we don’t see any need for a plastic shower curtain, as the floors are stone and hence not slippery when wet. The shower is set in a large bath tub, so not much spillage anyway to the floor. Most people like our stone walled bathrooms and we get many compliments about them. The bathrooms run all the way along separating the rooms but yes you can hear from bathroom to bathroom but not room to room, as there is a bathroom in-between. If you take a ground floor room you would not have a problem. How a bed can be made of stone is beyond me, they are spring mattress placed on a wooden frame. I checked the curtains, that we had tailored made for the windows and they cover the windows just fine. The call to prayer was a Hindu ceremony at the local temple on the beach. Loud chirping birds, well what do I say to this.

The Rambutan is a perfectly nice hotel but it won't be particularly memorable for us. It's not a bad hotel, but neither is it very outstanding.

Within Lovina there's no doubt that the Rambutan provides a nice little sanctuary away from the village. This side of the island is obviously a lot poorer than the south so it's a bit grottier and there's more touts and beggars. I'm a bit conflicted about Lovina - honestly, I probably wouldn't choose to go back there again but on the other hand it was nice to get away from all the tourists and spread some tourism dollars around to poorer areas.

Key points:

1) Rooms - We stayed in a villa which was nice, modern, clean and had all the amenities you could possibly want. Compared to other places in Bali we stayed in their value for money is questionable so I would probably recommend staying in a room. Another downside, they expect 100% payment upfront for villas for some inexplicable reason. They are nice but not that nice. Also, when we changed our mind and decided to leave two days early they tried to charge us a 100% cancellation fee. Moral to the story - book a normal room one night at a time!

2) Wifi - free wifi is a given in most hotels so the Rambutan is out of sync with the market by making you pay extra for hotspots. The only place you can access free wifi is in the back corner of the restaurant.

3) Restaurant - the complementary breakfasts are good but the rest of the time the restaurant is overpriced and underwhelming. In fact, it had the worst food we encountered in the whole of Bali. Luckily there are some good and very cheap little warungs nearby. Alcoholic drinks are also overpriced.

5) Pools/Gardens - the pools are nice and there are some toys and play equipment for kids. The gardens are so-so (I was a bit surprised by all the rave reviews about the gardens).

Overall, we enjoyed our time there but it was 'good' rather than 'excellent' with a few niggly things that undermined it.

You say we charge a 100% for villas and yes that is right because we get people like you who change their mind after booking the villa. We only have a few villas and when someone books them we block the villa and do net sell to anyone else. You were very sneaky and did not get round to paying the other 50% when asked but kept delaying and I guess you did this so you could decide when you got here. Very clever on your part. You then refused to pay what you had agreed to when booking the villa.

Regarding your other points: We have free WIFI at the restaurant and bar area and due to the size of our property which is over one hectare of tropical gardens, we charge a nominal fee for the hotspot that covers the whole grounds, which means a big investment for a small hotel in room numbers like us.

Our restaurant does very well and most people enjoy the reasonably priced food, like a whole fish or duck for two that costs USD14.00. Alcohol is also very reasonably priced for a hotel, large beer (two glasses) cost USD3.5 Yes there are plenty of cheaper warung type restaurants close by to us and I often recommend to guests which ones to try.

We have stayed at this hotel 4 times now and would not stay any where else in Lovina. The gardens are kept neat and trim, both pools and grounds are kept spotless. The hotel itself is always being updated and this stay staff were scrubbing driveways and pool paving.Richard the owner is English and is always available if you have a difficulty.Rambutans 2 senior staff Mas and Eny are also brilliant making sure the day to day things run smoothly. We also appreciate the little things this hotel do such as this time we found the pillows a little to high and when mentioned pillows were changed quickly. The restaurant has a nice outlook over main pool with some tables available at pools edge. Our only slight criticism is that staff work such long hours although I can also appreciate that the quiet economy is most likely responsible for this. We will definitely be back

Room Tip: Pay more for a superior room overlooking pool.

Thank you for your review and we are very pleased you keep coming back to Rambutan. Yes hours of work are long compared to western countries. All our staff are given one day off a week and also have two hour breaks in the afternoon. Hope to see you back again soon.
