We stayed at Damai Lovina in October, 2008, for 5 days. The staff and service were exceptional, the menu sublime (and the dining experience exceptional in all aspects), the outdoor private spa pool and shower fun, and evenings by the fire at the pool sheer relaxation. Staff showed real attention to detail and were polite, helpful, and punctual. The villas are lovely, and the gardens beautiful. Highly recommend the mojito-type tea. Airport transfers hassle-free, and the hotel offers a complementary taxi service to local sites/services. Wifi service was reliable. Great place for couples to relax in the peace and quiet of northern Bali.

My husband and I recently spent 3 nights at the beautiful Damai Lovina. We were greeted with wet towels and a fanatastic drink upon our arrival. The manager Dwi was most helpful and the entire staff was amazing. Each and every one of the staff went out of their way to make sure you were comfortable and had everything you possibly needed. Our villa was spacious and clean. We had a great outdoor shower which we just loved. There was even plenty of closet space! Each evening we would arrive back to our room to find a new treat in the eating/reading area of our room. The kimono and sarong were the most comfortable I have ever worn and had they had my size in stock, I would have definately purchased one to use at home! The bartender, also named Dwi (his monniker "driving while intoxicated) made the best drinks both with and w/o alcohol. He made up drinks that he thought I would enjoy. The food at the restaurant was out of this world and the head chef, Ketut, was so pleasant and went out of his way to prepare the most beautifully presented dishes. I got a tour of the kitchen and had I had more time, I would have taken his cooking class. We also had massages at their little spa and it was great. During our massage which is given outdoors in a covered area, we had torrential rains which only added to the overall experience. The music, the rain and the great massage will be memorable. There is a new area to Damai with the most beautiful villas. If you are not afaraid to spend a little bit more, go for the upgrade. You will not regret it. The architecture and furnishings in all of the accomodations are truly beautiful. Most visitors to Bali don't make it up to the North, but Damai Lovina is a place not to be missed.

Stayed in late December and were treated like kings and queens. Our two active boys aged two and six were given a lot of attention by the helpful staff, which made our stay very relaxing. The place is out of the way, but who needs to go anywhere? However, small villages nearby are nice to visit. Food is also exceptional. Only negative comment would be that nearby Lovina beach was very quiet at the time of visiting hence we were given a little to much attention from the local vendors. A more relaxed approach would at least encourage us to shop more.

We spent just one night as a part of our tour of Bali, but we immediately fell in love with this place. The location is certainly off the beaten track, about three hours from the international airport and about fifteen minutes uphill drive from the northern coast of Bali.
Once you're there, the hotel with it's beautiful grounds is like paradise, very luxurious but maintaining a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. There are only a handful of rooms which are actually little houses. Ours had the shower and a whirlpool outside, in a lovely little private walled-garden. The room itself was spacious, clean and luxuriously appointed.
The main-pool isn't huge, but very nice, with a great view.
The highlight of our stay was the dinner. The cuisine was excellent and by far the best we've experienced on Bali.
Altogether, the hotel offers excellent value compared to other high-end options on Bali, the drawback obviously being the location. However, there is plenty to see on the way, so you can make the most of the transfer by making sure you have plenty of time and a driver who knows the sights.
I think this hotel is a perfect place to relax, read and enjoy great food.

Spent five days at Damai, each more fantastic then the previous. Some observations:

- Expect to eat. The restaurant food, chef and staff are exceptional. Favorites were the morning bread basket and the tuna tartar on lemongrass stalks. We also opted to spend a day with the head chef which was a lot of fun and we learned a lot. We also took advantage of the complimentary room service often which appreciated after a long day of activity. Since Damai is rather removed from the rest of Lovina, be prepared to have most of you meals there.

- Expect to plan outings. Damai is nestled up in the hills above Lovina and is not easily accessible without a vehicle. Fortunately, the Damai staff provides a full menu of interesting outings and will modify or create a trip just for you. We particularly enjoyed snorkeling Menjangan island, our trip to the market with the chef and visiting the sarong factory (the only place to buy a sarong). The hot springs were also nice but you have to run the gauntlet of merchants there and back. Our least favorite activities included a stop at Lovina beach (nothing but merchants) and the dolphin outing by traditional boat. If you've never seen a dolphin, perhaps this would appeal but the reality was very tacky as literally hundreds of boats jockey to view the same animals.

- Expect quiet time. As noted, Damai is removed from Lovina so it's you, the staff and a few other guests. The bungalows provide good privacy and there's a real laid-back pace.

- The spa is so-so. We spent a few hours in the spa - an open air hut close to the road and though the staff was courteous and competent, the facilities just don't match-up to similar resorts. I would advise arranging any services to happen in your room.

Damai makes a great home to explore the surrounding area. Lovina itself was OK, but there was enough to see for a 3-4 day stay. The facilities and staff are fantastic, the food is beyond exceptional. Highly recommended.

We had a great time at Damai, the staff was really nice, the location has a great view. Best part of this hotel is that its away from the touristy areas of south Bali.

The chef is really creative, I recommend getting the 6-course tasting menu - but make sure you are hungry! My wife and I agreed desserts were amazing.

The bartenders were the best! We asked them to get creative using some non-typical fruits for drinks they delivered each time! Great guys, great drinks.

The villas are great, quiet, nice, wifi/internet included, room service 24/7. Just ask for the room away from the main office/kitchen. Some of the villa have views, others are a bit more recessed, best to ask. Make sure you book in advance. Very popular place.

The staff were very personable, always helpful. Overally, we had a enjoyable stay.
