I stay at Al Mulino regularly when in the area on business and I have to say that it's a little gem of a place.

It's a converted windmill which gives it loads of character and the Italian family who own and run it are incredibly friendly and helpful.

The rooms are modern and, whilst they may not be to everyone's taste (bathroom is not a separate room but WC is separate), the beds are comfy and I always sleep like a log. The only thing I would change are the pillows - square pillows are not the easiest for Brits.

The fact I always sleep well may also have something to do with the fantastic Italian restaurant in the hotel. They have changed chef recently and the last 4 / 5 meals I have had have been truly outstanding - on a par with anything I tasted in Milan when living there. I would say it is refined yet simple Italian food. The quality of the produce is optimal which is the key to great Italian cooking.

The wine selection is fantastic and the ambience perfect. The place itself is very smart and the service is always spot on.

I would suggest al Mulino for a romantic night away or, if you like your shopping, try combining it with a trip to Maasmechelen Outlet Village which is only 10 minutes away. Well worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a shower as opposed to a bath.....unless you want to take a bath !!!!!

We spent 2 nights in this new hotel with 2 (elder) couples. We had booked 2 months in advance 2 'Deluxe' rooms through Booking.com (as we always do, never problems). At arrival it seemed that we got 2 'standard' rooms, and no possibility to get a deluxe room, as depicted in their promotion. Of course not, they only have 1 (one!) room that classifies as 'Deluxe' room (room with extra space and seperate sitting place)... Talking of false information and very doubtful (illegal) marketing!!! Don't expect slippers or bathrobe either... (announced as present in all rooms), and some rooms don't even have a wardrobe. Oh yes, the 'seating area' means that there is 1 (one!) chair present in the room. Sofa? which sofa??? As we were alert and assertive enough, we finally got the compensation of free breakfast (which matches exactly the price difference of 30€ a day between classic and deluxe room), but had to suffer an aweful (almost insulting) discussion with the lady-owner... she "considers" the rooms shown as classic rooms as being 'deluxe'... so she charges them at that price: imagine our astonishment? All other personnel is very friendly and tries to run the hotel, but is clear that the management fails completely. Breakfast with cold eggs and bacon the first morning, rather poor. Personnel cleaning the floors while you are having your breakfast? Oh yes, you better believe it! Restaurant: very tastful food, friendly waiters, good wines, but expect prices that are at the very high range for an Italian restaurant. This hotel has the potential to become something very good, but then not with the actual mentality of the owners... Once, and never again!

I visit Geleen, Holland around twice a month, and when I can’t get into my usual hotel I will explore a little and take a chance on other local accommodation. So I found this place on one of the hotel booking sites, and because of the rather good looking room pictures I thought I would take the chance (the fact that it was based around an old 1800's windmill also seemed appealing... for a bit of quirky character.

Before arriving I had specifically requested a room with a double bed (I don’t know why, but in this particular part of Holland (well the hotel is actually just across the boarder, in Belgium) all the hotel beds seem to be singles or two singles pushed together (very uncomfortable when you are used to a king size bed at home). On arrival, it was as I expected, a nice old character windmill building, with a modern hotel & restaurant around it. I found out that they actually opened in November 2011 (5 months ago), so everything was new, and very tastefully decorated with materials and furnishings from Italy.

The old gentleman at reception struggled slightly with English, but showed me to my room and explained the layout. Unfortunately the room had the usual 2 single beds pushed together, so I asked for a double and was shown to another room again with 2 singles, anyway it turned out that there are no double beds. I was very disappointed with the uncomfortable bed... I had two single duvets, which kept falling off during the night, but worst point was the very uncomfortable pillows... they were 4 times the size of a normal pillow, and looked very trendy when on display, but were awful to sleep on.... I had 2 bad nights as a result.

The restaurant & wine bar, again were very new looking and tastefully decorated, with the chefs cooking 'out front', the food and wine selection looked good. I ordered tuna chunks, followed by veal steak, with 2 glasses of house red wine.... the quality was very average, but the price was not, coming in at 45 Euros.

Overall, the staff seemed very friendly and helpful, and I could sense what the owners were trying to achieve, but unfortunately they are not there yet. The place has great potential, but they need to pay attention to the detail. Maybe if the staff & owners stay in the rooms overnight and invite friends in to sample the food anonymously giving honest feedback, they might get a better idea of the areas that need fixing, and make this a great hotel. Good luck to them, but I won’t be staying here again anytime soon.

New hotel (14 rooms), built around an old windmill. The hotel entrance is in the mill, rooms and restaurant are located in the new building. Hotel is located outside Maasmechelen, in a rural area not far from industry. Al Mulino has a modern design, is stylish and looks very clean and neat. I had a standard room (#16), which was stylish and trendy, and therefore not always practical. Little to no space to store clothes, no closet, not even a coat hanger to hang a pair of pants. Room and bathroom are one open space, where the shower is equipped with a glass door. No hotel information available in the hotel rooms (eg dinner- and breakfast time), neither a "do not disturb" sign. The hotel offers free WIFI, however not available yet in the hotel rooms. The staff in general is friendly. The reception is located in the wine bar / restaurant. Al Mulino has an excellent Italian restaurant, is a bit pricey and very popular with non-residential visitors. The breakfast is simple and pretty basic. It was a bit annoying to see staff cleaning the restaurant, whilst guests still have their breakfast. Al Mulino should definitely solve a number of teething problems. Overall a great hotel-restaurant with a beautiful design, but not practical in a number of places.
