Pantai Mas

I must say i expected much more having read previous posts on tripadvisor. We came back with some positive feelings and some negatives as well. We had not chosen this place for spiritual reasons or anything of that kind, but just were looking for a place to relax, different from usual hotel resorts. And different it was...

Let me begin with some positives. The place is totally different from what you will find anywhere at Bali thats for sure. Simply but functional rooms with open air showers are not luxurious but serve its purpose well. pool is nice and pleasant with no crowds around (at least for the time we were in). Good idea is also no reception in the building, it supports the feeling of "home away from home".

The negatives? Well not everyone is excited by meeting a resident bunch of roosters with exceptional abilities to squak around all night from 1am. You can either kill them or live with the noise, but if it is your holiday time, you might not be overexcited by them. If you meet a bunch of cockroaches at the bathroom, you will hardly be pleasantly surprised (to be correct we only saw them regularly in one room, the other looked cockroachfree. Apart from that be prepared to small (but fine) breakfasts (breakfast is not anything to talk about at most places on Bali), not very exciting beach, 25 minutes walk to reach central Lovina and tour prices somehow more expensive if you book your tours directly at the hotel. But it is the same practice as everywhere. In here, be prepared to relaxed atmosphere (especially if you are Dutch) but also to businesslike behaviour. If you take a canoe for 15 minutes you will be charged a full day rate

Anyway if you are looking for someting different far away from crowded Kuta atc., go for it. If you are looking for sunbathing at your luxury, just run away, this is not your place. Not bad Germano-Indonesian restaurant is around the corner. And just one more thing from my point of view - there is much more to see in indonesia, dont stay at Bali too long...

Room Tip: Local personel speaks some english but if you have something important to talk about, just talk to...

It is such a beautiful place, almost indescribably. The view is amazing on both sides, but I prefer seaside; in lucky days you can see the dolphins from out the hotel and the sunsets are wonderfull! The staff is very friendly and it's a nice thing to eat with all the stayers (if you want to). The food is prepared freshly every day and it's the original Bali-food! So good!
The yarden is wonderfull and calming. Pantai Mas is like a little peace of heaven.

I can't say enough about Pantai Mas. It's a “spirit and learning center” on the north coast of Bali, north of the mountains, in Temukus Bay, near Lovina. It's not at all a typical resort hotel, of which there are many along the beachfront in the area. Small but growing, it hosts mostly long-term guests of anywhere from weeks to months. Our 4 days were atypical, though they are open of course to short stays, as well.

Pantai Mas is owned and operated by Evert, a Dutchman living in Bali, and his Balinese wife Dayu. As is their practice of personally transporting their guests to/from the Bali airport in Denpasar (nearly 4 hours away, over the mountain!), they both went together to Ubud to pick us up and bring us to Pantai Mas and then, later in the week Dayu took us over again to the airport for our departure.

In addition to being co-owner and operations manager and chief driver and tour guide of Pantai Mas, Dayu also creates delicious, nutritious dishes for the super-healthy menu we were served every day (full board option). We told her she could do a side business selling her recipes! Guests are served breakfast on their own schedule during the morning, but everyone is called together by the ringing of a bell and sits down together family style for lunches (around 1 p.m.) and dinners (around 7 p.m.). A beautiful, family feeling and opportunity to get to know everyone.

One morning, Dayu arranged for us to hire a catamaran to take us to see the dolphins that hang out a mile or two off shore. A huge tourist attraction from the surrounding hotels, but we went after the tourist crowd. The dolphins (dozens of them!) put on quite a show for us. We felt it was for us personally – they disappeared during a time another boat came through and then reappeared after it had passed. The babies leaped totally out of the water doing somersaults and spins. And they slapped the water with their tails as we turned to go, as if saying good bye. We felt truly blessed and so connected with them. Then we went snorkeling in the coral reefs a few hundred feet off shore. Beautiful coral formations and colorful tropical fish, of course. Biggest surprise for me was the electric-blue-colored star fish.

On another day, Dayu took us to see the GitGit waterfalls up in the mountains, where, after detouring to see lower falls, we got to unexpectedly blaze a trail up the mountainside for a shortcut back to Dayu’s van.

All in all, an amazing experience!
