First on my visit list for my second visit to Lovina in two years and I was not disappointed.
It cannot be coincidence that we were sat in a full Mr Dolphin restaurant and the one next door had NO customers. Good food, extremely welcoming staff and very friendly atmosphere. Local musicians (often the staff) play local music but will have a go at almost any type of music and have a fairly extensive request playlist. Two guitars, a bongo drum and tambourine playing 'brick in the wall' has to be heard to be believed!
Transport to and from the restaurant can be arranged. Believe what you read from other reviewers, you will not be disappointed.

Warung Dolphin in Lovina, Bali, is one of the best and most delightful restaurants in the world! I have eaten here at least a hundred times on many trips to Bali--and ran back here for the exquisite seafood special platter in November 2013. It contains a very fresh and delicious seafood assortment of moist broiled tuna, fresh shrimps, squid, and steamed vegetables. Served with delicious nasi putih (Balinese white rice) and magnificent sambal matah as an accompaniment. It just doesn't get any better than this. Mr. and Mrs. Dolphin were thrilled to see me again--all customers are remembered and treated like very welcome friends. Excellent English is spoken, and all dishes are served with a huge, sincere smile. Warung Dolphin is a very special, quiet, and peaceful part of the paradise that is Bali.

Mr. Dolphin (Gede Masda) and Mrs. Dolphin (Kadek Astini), are the very friendly owners of the delightful Warung Dolphin, a small, local, beach-front restaurant opened in 1999 in Lovina. Situated right across from Banyualit beach, it specializes in boat-fresh seafood (Mr. Dolphin has his own prahu in the waters daily). Mr. and Mrs. Dolphin pamper and indulge all of their (mainly western) customers, and will pick up guests by motorbike anywhere in Lovina (just call him on his mobile phone). They made it their business to learn exactly what their many Dutch and German clients want—and have implemented extremely stringent hygienic standards in the preparation of their food. Mr. Dolphin personally leaps to attention to serve the guests and takes their orders with a huge happy smile and a joyous welcome for returning guests from previous years. Everyone is welcome, taken good care of, protected, and treated as family. The food is among the best in the world—from Balinese specialties like gado-gado to luscious tuna, shrimp, and squid. Mr. Dolphin and the local boys also have an open guitar and music session every night after 9 PM in this relaxed, intimate, comfortable café.

The ever-smiling, beautiful Mrs. Dolphin is the chef-extraordinaire in the rear kitchen, and allowed me into her spotlessly clean, well-organized cooking stronghold (2008) to watch a magical preparation of traditional Balinese tum. Tum is usually made from either chicken or boneless fish like tuna, marlin, or mahi-mahi—as these forms of protein are “easier to get” (expensive pork tum is only for ceremonies). A Balinese wife will prepare tum at home once every one or two weeks for her family for lunch or dinner—whenever she can afford to buy the chicken (a costly ingredient). Eel tum is a traditional village dish—availability of eel is sporadic, seasonal, and geographical, as it is sourced from nearby rice fields. Tum requires considerable time, an almost obsessive sense of devotion, craftsmanship-like art work, and manual dexterity, but this delicious, visually adorable dish is well worth it!

took a chance and went back after four years, a lot of new hotels on the beach , probably all inclusive but not for us. we decided to see if mr dolphin was still around.we called in at 8pm one evening , but no one there. we sat down and ordered some food and then mr dolphin himself turned up. he recognised us from years ago and then he got his guitar out and started singing. another couple came in and a friend of mr dolphin who sang along with him. it turned out to be a lovely evening especially when mr dolphins young son aged four joined in the dancing. after mr dolphin drove us back to our hotel. thank you mr dolphin
