“Not Bad, Not Great Either.....BEWARE of Solicitors......”
Reviewed 7 April 2010

Central Lovina isn't really a place to wander around and explore there's not much there to begin with. It's really just to stay and have some R&R in the resort itself. I was already forewarned about those lame ripoff dolphin tours so I'm just doing everyone a service by saying, "Don't even bother".

Puri Bagus was one of the more expensive hotels that we stayed at in Bali, I don't know if it was really worth it b/c I didn't stay anywhere else in Lovina but I didn't feel that we got quality service.

We got an ocean view room which was great b/c it looked out to the ocean with a beautiful sunset and had awesome cabanas along the perimiter to chill out and read a book and enjoy the sounds of the ocean. But, I initially had to switch rooms after I complained about the gang of solicitors loitering by a cabana in front of my room. It really bugged me that the resort allowed solicitors to loiter around the perimeter so every now and then you'd see some random guy or two walking up and down along the cabanas trying to get you to go on some lame dolphin tour or snorkeling.

The hotel staff would solicit services in general and were kinda pushy about it, I didn't really appreciate that. For the 10th time, thanks, but I'll pass on the spa services. We were even swindled to going on an expensive dinner boat cruise where I got seasick. Seasickness aside, we were better off on the hotel grounds b/c they had a special event that night where it was a Balinese Buffet dinner with Balinese cultural dancing and music, it wasn't free but it was cheaper than the boat cruise and alot more entertaining.

The grounds were well kept with fresh flowers everywhere which I loved.

Our room was substantial, it was clean for the most part. I wish the bathroom was a little cleaner, I'm a stickler for immaculate bathrooms. The outdoor shower looked much more luxurious in the photos than in real life so I opted for the indoor shower instead (you get both in your room). Our AC was dripping so their workaround was to put a big towel on the floor to soak up the water.

The food was expensive as mentioned in previous reviews and not memorable either.

The pool area was nice and the solicitors seemed to stay away from there.

The beach is just for that sunset view glittering against the small strip of black sand. You can't swim in the water, it's pretty dingy.

The one major positive I experienced at Puri Bagus was a Lovina Village Trek that we signed up for. Ok, I know, I got swindled into another package but I have to admit it was pretty memorable. It was a small group tour and luckily for me and my bf it was just the 2 of us and our guide and driver. We hiked around the villages and forests where our guide would talk about the plants, culture, and religion, saw a hidden balinese hindi altar in the forest, school children during recess running towards us to practice their english, clove farmers harvesting cloves high up in the trees, and to top it off we ended our day with a late lunch at a balinese farmers home with homecooked balinese food and enjoyed dessert in a little cabana by the cloves drying out in the sun, it was gorgeous and memorable.

Village trek aside, I wasn't satisfied with Puri Bagus. I think the loitering solicitors along the property perimeter and the pushy in-house staff solicitors pretty much ruined the experience. That and the front desk lobby didn't seemed concerend about my dissatisfaction and complaints about the loitering solicitors. I think they need to work on their customer service, the only reason why I gave them a 3 instead of a 2 is b/c the restaurant staff was very nice. And maybe they since they charge so much for the rooms they should use that money to hire a security guard to keep solicitors away or cleanup the beach property.

We stayed at the Puri Bagus for two nights this week in an Ocean view room. It was the most expensive of the rooms we stayed in on Bali but not the best. They are spacious and comfortable but simple. The air-conditioning was good, despite what an earlier reviewer noted. There is a private outdoor shower in addition to the one in the bathroom.
The hotel is a beautiful complex of thatched bungalows along the beach, with a large and deep infinity pool.
Breakfast was OK but during our stay no-one ate dinner at the hotel. Prices seem reasonable and the soup I had at lunch was good. There are three little restaurants within five minutes walk, and more expensive alternatives with shuttle services if that is what you are after.
The spa is located in several open pavilions surrounded by lily ponds. One hears the waves on the beach. The treatment was OK given the happy hour discount but the staff inexperienced.
Getting woken at daybreak by the mosque next door was shocking but we soon fell asleep again. Aside from that a pleasant and relaxing stay.

We had already stayed in the north area of Bali,so we knew that is not so "developed"for the tourists. The hotel was o.k.(apart from the mosque and the electricity factory that got on our nerves sometimes). It has a great pool ,the rooms are big and cozy, but every night we had to take out the frogs that were coming in.When we arrived there was water running from the flush pipe ,but the next day was fixed. At breakfast (which was o.k.)we had to search for someone to make us eggs-every morning! The Spa was nice ,but there was too much noise from the beach(a buplic one as they told me)and I left with 5 great bites of mosquitos! We chose this hotel only because we wanted our son to visit this area of Bali, and he loved it,as he did with the excursions we had around there. We ate only once at its restaurant as it was pricy and no great food.We usually had dinner before going back to the hotel at the Dutch-Bali couple restaurant just outside it(they even made spagghetti for my son that didn't like bali food). The staff was arranging for us any excursion we asked at a normal price, and we saw some great places we have checked before leaving home .(what to see in Lovina area-trip advisorand Balispirit.com and Balistarisland.com).We didn't have great expectations at this area,so we weren't really dissappointed from what we got.

if you are a light sleeper do not go here - the mosque call to prayer is just up the driveway and at 0430 each day you can hear because of the loudspeakers, even over your air con. But the puri bagus itself is lovely and you soon get back to sleep. It needs a little bit of care as the grounds are a bit dangerous - especially for small kids or people who have a disability of any sort. the service was wonderful and the rooms were kept spotless. Like usual the buffet dinners are exhorbitant. Just take a 2 min stroll up the driveway to 1000 dreams bungalow and restaurant, the Bambu or the seamans cafe and you get a wonderful selection of food and drinks at a very cheap price. The service at these restaurants is wonderful - in the 1000 dream you feel as though you are sitting in their lounge room as the service is so friendly without being in your face. All three knew what you meant by "no chilli please"

Let's go straight to the point, when you first arrive to Puri Bagus the first thing that comes to your mind is "Woaa this place is gorgeous", when you leave this place it's more in the lines of "Wooaww I got robbed and abused bad time!".

Location:
The hotel is really well located on the beach. The beach by itself is quite small and you can barely swim since its full of sharp coral pieces. Let's be honest the sunset is quite amazing. But if you want to have a look around the hotel or maybe find a restaurant, stores, anything, forget about it and don't count on the staff to try and help you out since the main objective of this hotel is to force you to stay between its walls and spit your occidental cash out.

Rooms:
Rooms are fine, we especially loved the bathroom and outdoor shower but what a surprise when one morning we had three hotel employees unexpectedly coming in to.....change 'one' lightbulb (that is one changing the lightbulb, one holding the ladder and the last one staring at my girlfriend in the bed).

Service & Food:
Let's be honest, there is one thing Puri Bagus employees want to get out of you is '$$$$'!
The first night we arrived was 'Buffet' night, now hold your breath this cost us $30 per head!! (IDR 300,000) yeah $30! More expensive than New York or even London where we work. We could not believe it when we saw the bill, and that is without the $20 bottle of wine and don't forget to add service and tax! The whole meal cost us around $100 with wine and service and the food was far to be the best in Bali.

Now the internet. We wanted to skype our families and decided to go for a prepaid card handed over at reception. This one costs $6.5 for one hour which again is more expensive than New York or London, oh to give you an idea the next day we went to an internet café in Singaraja and paid IDR1,000 for 20 minutes, that is 0.10 pence or 0.15USD.

Furthermore hotel staff were really unfriendly since we were trying to "sneak out" of the hotel to either discover the area or just have a meal at a decent place which would not rip us off! You only get one free shuttle out of jail...errr....sorry, the hotel, and that is 'only' between 9 and 11am, that is drop off and pick up included so you better be quick. The guy dropped us in the middle of a slum in Singaraja (to make sure you're repelled and disgusted and plea the driver to get back to the hotel asap) this is where we found the internet cafe, we asked the driver to drop us at a supermarket on our way back where we hope we could find some food to save us money by not eating at the hotel 'restaurant'.

Overall our stay at this hotel was really unpleasant because of the really bad service and unsmiling staff + the fact we felt like human size purses to everyone.

This hotel wants your money and doesn't want you outside its walls so if you're happy to stay inside and spend more than you would in Europe or the US then this is for you. Otherwise skip this place, you'll save some money and stay relaxed.

The views from Puri Bagus Lovina across the Bali Sea provide an immediate calm. Not so calming was the lack of adequate light in the rooms and the ability to keep the room cool on very hot days/nights. I also found the location to be quite buggy (no fault of the Puri Bagus). This is a simpler hotel with lots of families staying and some groups. It's likely the best in the area and is fine for a couple of nights stay. You just need to manage your expectations.

This hotel is absolutely gorgeous and perfect. The grounds are breathtaking, the pool is the most beautiful I've ever seen, fading off to the Indonesian Sea, the rooms are stunning. Rooms are all small bungalows with thatched roofs and outdoor showers! Just be sure to close the curtains on the front doors, as the bamboo blinds are see-through during the evening and although the outdoor shower is enclosed, the window into the bedroom is lined up with the front door windows and...you get the picture. The food was average and the buffet wasn't refilled as often as most places do, so there were often many almost empty dishes on the tables. On Saturday night they had Balinese dancing during the buffet dinner. They also frequently had musicians playing in the lobby during the day. Internet access was quite reasonably priced. The thatch-roofed platforms along the beach were so comfortable and scenic.
