“Place to stay after completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks”
Reviewed 5 June 2013

Myself, work colleagues and friends stayed here for two nights before and after completeing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.
Friday night arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff, helped in with our bags and shown to our lovely clean and homely rooms! The sausage and mash that night was second to none!!
Saturday we returned after a long day walking, the place was buzzing with people talking about their experiences, which the staff were also interested in. We were served an amazing evening meal in the dining room, enough room to cater for all 26 of us! This night my steak was one of the best I've had for a long time and not a single person wasnt happy with their meal!
Would certainly recommend this pub for staying at whilst doing any walks in the Yorkshire Dales, very welcoming, very clean and a great local pub!
Yes there are signs advising the rules and regs but perhaps if we all just adhered to them, it wouldnt seem so daunting!!! :)

“Just as a pub should be.”
Reviewed 20 May 2013

We ate here in the evening prior to completing the Three Peaks Challenge (3 mountains in 12 hours) and again on the evening of the challenge itself (very proud of our 9 hrs 50 mins achievement by four women in their late 40's!). The pub has an amazing buzzy atmosphere with everyone chatting about their experiences. We ate in the bar area, so as to savour the atmosphere some more. The food was superb, the portions huge and staff friendly and efficient. All in all, a great place.

“Not bad”
Reviewed 14 May 2013 via mobile

Ate here one night whilst staying at the nearby bunkhouse.

I ate here after completing the Yorkshire three peaks so was starving and tired. I ordered the meat and potatoe pie with suet crust.
It came on a huge plate with chips peas and loads of gravy.
The meal was alright, the suet crust was about 3 inches thick and too much to take in, even for someone like me who can eat for England.

All in all it was good to fill me up after the walk, and was better quality than the nearby Golden Lion.

The pub was really busy, but they seemed to cope with our large group, other than my mate ordering the homemade burger, which arrived without the meat in the bun!

Not a bad place for a bite to eat and a pint after a hard days walk

“Rules rules rules”
Reviewed 27 April 2013 via mobile

After walking a peak we wanted to relax and sit down with a cold drink in the pub.. Front door has so many DO NOT this DO NOT that signs. We walked through the door to see more signs!! NO MUDDY BOOTS. NO DOGS. DO NOT SIT AROUND THE FIRE. DO NOT DRY YOUR COAT NEAR THE FIRE. NO BACKPACKS. Which is rather ironic seen as its one of two pubs in the walking district. We had to sit outside due to having our backpacks, and we had our dog with us as he came on the Pen Y Gent walk with us. We sat on a bench outside and opened a pack of sweets for a sugar fix and a member of staff came and told us we wernt allowed to eat them as you can only eat food off their menu. We put them away but then had a member of staff just stood at the doorway staring at us to make sure we wouldn't get them back out and they just made us feel uncomfortable so we left.
This pub will not last long with the new owners. We have been in previously with our dog, our backpacks and even muddy boots, sat having a drink around the fire and it was fine and great atmosphere but next time we will choose to drink at the other pub.

“You don't have to do the peaks before dining, but it helps”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

The welcome was genuine, and the provenance of the food was impeccable. The dining facilities are basic, but genuine. You did dine with your boots on. After a hard day's walking the Black Sheep went down a treat, the Lamb Henry was exquisite and the Pork Special not far behind. I'll use the word again: the food felt genuine and cared about.
The service was a little mixed up - we got someone else's order twice, and the coffee required a little more insistence than was really required, but a pleasant experience topped by good food. Highly recommended.
