“Excellent traditional Yorkshire pub food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2013 via mobile

Looking for a gastro pub and service with finesse? Then what are you doing in Horton in Ribblesdale? I don't understand why this place has had such negative reviews. It's a basic no nonsense Yorkshire unmodernised local pub which serves traditional pub food to a high standard with excellent well kept draught beers including Black Sheep. We liked it so much that we went two days running. I can highly recommend Old Peculiar Beef and Mushroom Pie. The staff are a bit brusque as you'd expect in Yorkshire but I would prefer this to fawning waiting staff who repeatedly ask if you are enjoying your meal and then appear to be totally flummoxed if you don't say 'yes'.

“Unfriendly and unappetising”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2013

It's a shame that this is one of the only options if you need a meal in this area.

As commented on, there is a feeling of hostility to the place with the abundance of "do not" signs.

The food takes too long to arrive, and is of reasonably poor quality for the price.

It's obvious from the responses of the owners to previous reviews that constructive criticism is not listened to - therefore I shall comment no further:

"perhaps in New Zealand you don't know what proper beer is."

"I'm sure if you have managed to do the 3 peaks its not asking to much for you to walk the short distance to the bar to order your food. "

Need I say more.

“Fairly good food, good service, good price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2013

We stopped here for food after completing the three peaks challenge. One of our friends had to catch a train in 45 minutes and they brought his food out in less than fifteen minutes, the pub was pretty busy so was very impressed. All the food was fairly good pub grub but my wife had the roast chicken and it was a bit dry. The menu was quite good for a small pub, they had three real ales and a selection of other wines and lagers.

Overall, good pub food but don't expect gourmet.

“Fawlty towers”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

Positive points are that the landlord and lady are a comedy double act. Absolutely no idea about customer service. They offended the rest of our party although I found them amusing. Decided not to spend our money in the soulless dinning room and went up the road to the golden lion for big belly laughs good food and a cracking night.

“Unfriendly and a lot of notices telling what you can and cannot do!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2013

My wife and I went in here yesterday - there's definitely no small talk or pleasantries, in fact the bar staff couldn't even manage a "thank you" when they took my money. Unbelievable! They have about 40 different signs throughout the pub, you can't do this, can't do that (who are these people! do they not like customers?). The barman did give me quite a distasteful look when he saw me taking a picture of the notices splattered across the front door! It's more like a borstal than a pub and I won't be going again!
