My visit to Sutherland was made all the more enjoyable by the friendliness of my hosts, Betsie and Kobus. Kobus helped me with the purchase of Karoo lamb and even took me to the Butcher to select the meat and collected it the evening before departure.
The room was comfortable and clean and there was an oversupply of linen and towels; extra blankets were supplied and there was a very welcome electric blanket on the bed which made going to bed in this very cold place a pleasure. The bathroom, en suite, was large and practical (shower only).
Sutherland is a typical Karoo "dorp" where a visit to the Southern Africa Large Telescope and
surrounding area is extremely interesting and informative.
We were extremely fortunate in that the past rains caused the landscape to blossom with fields of flowers in unbelievable colour - mauve, yellow, orange and white.
A truly enjoyable experience.
