“Oasis of calm”
Reviewed 29 April 2011

What a lovely, tranquil place. Couldn't fault a thing. This is ideal getaway place and the hosts, Lorel and Michael are superb at what they do. The house is such full of character and they make one feel so at home. We will definitely be revisiting.

Location, service, value all excellent. All the comfort of a great hotel in a stunning, peaceful rural location combined with homeliness such as log fires and an open heart. Really comfortable beds and linens completed the picture. Lorel really wants you to enjoy your stay and share the magnificent house and gardens where she lives. Her generosity of spirit suffuses the atmosphere. We left Higher Melcombe feeling like we had really switched off and shaken off stresses of London life ready to face the world refreshed and renewed. Mission accomplished.

Lorel and Michael have restored this fabulous Tudor manor house to an immaculate standard. They could not have done more to make us feel welcome and to ensure that all was well for our only too brief visit . We cannot wait to return , and to enjoy the rooms , the garden the delicious food, and the warmth of their hospitality.

I stayed at Higher Melcombe Manor in July this year and thoroughly recommend it to those in search of a gorgeous getaway in the heart of the Dorset countryside.
The Manor house itself is spectacular and through careful and exquisite refurbishment manages to create a seamless blend of historical house with modern convenience. The rooms are gorgeous and even though you are staying in someone's private home, you have a sense of luxurious privacy. The gardens are stunning and the surrounding countryside is wonderful - make sure you have a car and go exploring. The hosts are fabulous and as Alfie the lurcher poses on the front lawn you could be forgiven you have woken up in a bygone era. My weekend was the perfect getaway from the rat race and I look forward to my return visit.

Take a break at Higher Melcombe Manor, and you enter another world. This is the English country house experience 'par execellence'. You soak up the seclusion and beauty of another era, yet the house has been sensitively renovated to provide 5 star accommodation while still keeping the aura of a time of gentler pace and refinement. Nestled in the hidden folds of the Dorset countryside, you can embrace the scenic beauty and explore the never ending lanes and walks, or just idle away the day watching nature, breathe in the exotically clean air, 'talk to the birds', or while away the time in the village pub! Stay for a minimum 3 days, and you will forget where you came from.

A stunning manor with it's own adjoining chapel, surrounded by quintessentially English gardens, nestled amoungst the rolling Dorset hills and diary farms. Inside, the rooms have been finished with great care using fresh, stylish fabrics and colours with newly finished bathrooms. All the benefits of staying in a truly historic manor, without the ancient, cold, limscale stained bathrooms and horsehair mattresses. Breakfast was excellent and Lorel is a very keen and enthusiatic host. High end on price for a B&B, but it certainly delivers.

You approach the house up a long private road with mature lime trees to the left (and masses of daffodils – it was April) and lush green hills away to the right.

Lorel and Michael made us feel very welcome and everything was done to help us settle in and relax.

The house is lovely and steeped in history. It has some really beautiful rooms, gardens and panoramic views in every direction over green fields and undulating hills.

Nothing seemed too much trouble for our hosts and we were able to easily make flexible arrangements for meals to fit around our trips out.

All our bedrooms were spotless with fresh flowers, comfortable beds and crisp white cotton sheets.

This is excellent accommodation and a lot of effort has obviously been put in to make this house elegant, welcoming and very comfortable.

My top tip is to stay for at least two nights. One isn't enough!
