“Fantastic retreat in the Andalusian Mountains”
Reviewed 26 November 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Everything you have read is true - and then some.
If you are looking for guaranteed sunshine, peace and quiet with the Andalusian charm but without the overcommercialised tourist resort feel La Solana is for you.

The villa is genuinely great; 3 very spacious bedrooms, big living room and fully equipped kitchen (no dishwasher). The pool with adjoining pool bar is something else too.

The villa has tons of outdoor space (incl covered options) which basically means you are never indoors.

The villa is completed secluded and offers amazing views of the surrounding country side with its acres and acres of vineyards and orchards.

This unique remote location does however mean a significant drive to local towns and supermarkets which some would argue is not for the faint hearted. After a week or so the drive from the villa to the main road is about 10 min or so - on day one the same drive will take you approx 30 min - the Grand Tour will certainly scout this location for a future episode.

Jenny and Phil are your hosts whilst on holiday and they are just fantastic - fast response times, anything you need nothing is too much trouble and Jenny even leaves her personal Andalusian travel kit (maps / books / tips) behind for you to use during your stay.

The area surrounding the villa is very Spanish and lacks the typical Costa Del Sol plastic fantastic feel (but you can still access that in about 40 min!).
Lots of sleepy Andalusian villages where you can brush up your Spanish and eat delicious food at prices from the Peseta era.

Highly recommend a holiday at La Solana if you are in need of a proper battery reload with plenty of sunshine and relaxation. Make sure you rent a proper car with enough power as you will need it going into el Campo.

Phil and Jenny - thanks so much for being fantastic hosts - hope to be back.

Many thanks for confirming again how much you enjoyed your stay. We agree that the villa has an interesting drive through the vineyards whilst enjoying distant views over the mountains. This is part and parcel of getting such a secluded hideaway. It was great to see you and we look forward to seeing you again.

“Wonderful”
Reviewed 21 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We had a wonderful stay at La Solana. Jenny and Phil were gracious hosts and we were warmly greeted upon arrival. The view from the house was spectacular, and made the slightly scary drive up the mountain road worthwhile. La Solana is a gem and it really is a must-visit location if one enjoys stunning views, great weather and an authentic taste of Spain. We would happily visit again.

“Beautiful location, spectacular views.”
Reviewed 21 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Firstly the villa itself is spotless, quite well equipped and very remote.
so if you are looking for a holiday away from the flocks then this is the place.

There are a couple of local villages which offer good restaurants and mini supermarkets (Covirans) for you to stock up on esstentials.
They are about 25 minutes away car essential.
Our favourite was El Borge, but Al machar and Moclinejo are gorgeous.
A little further out is Comares well worth a visit.

There really is nothing more spectacular than the views at La Solana, it is quiet breathtaking.

There are a few con's to being so far up in the mountains, one being that the travel to the villa is on a dirt track with sheer drops on both sides on some of the journey, so if you suffer from a fear of heights this might not be for you. One of our party really did find the journey to and fro quiet a challenge and if she had known before hand she would have reconsidered this as her stay, so just to warn you in advance. The rest of us found the trip fine and the views spectacular.

the pool is a fantastic size, but .... at night and being so high up you are going to get bugs etc. nothing major, but in the morning instead of being able to jump in for a morning swim the pool had a layer of nasty little mozzie type bugs and although there is a net we had to get in, in pairs with a mesh curtain/tablecloth to really clear the pool so a cover really is a necessity! it didn't stop us enjoying the pool although a pain in the morning having to clear it out.

There is a shortage of water here so we had to have the tank filled weekly. Not a problem as a quick phone call and the water was back on. But you do have to be very economical with water. again not to much of a bug bear but worth knowing.

wasps are a pain in the butt and the kids had a screaming fest every day so had to eat in side most of the time. again being up high as we didn't find this when we visited beaches etc. A fly swatter keeps them at bay!!

That really is the only negatives and the pool problem could be easily rectified.

So if your looking to get away from the flocks and the beauty of a mountain retreat then don't hesitate. you wont be disappointed, its a simply beautiful place to relax.

Enjoy. :-))

Many thanks for your review. We are very happy you all enjoyed your stay at this fabulous villa set in the total seclusion the Mountains of Malaga with its stunning views. By its very location the route to the villa is along the side of the mountain which as you noted the other members of your party adapted to very quickly.
The insects learning to swim in the pool is not usually a problem as the skimmer sorts them out. There has been virtually no rain since last summer so there is a desperate shortage of water with the pool level being a little low to enable the skimmer to work efficiently.
We look forward to seeing you again in this beautiful part of Spain.

“Beautiful and secluded for peace and tranquility”
Reviewed 16 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

I have just returned from 2 weeks at this amazing villa. It is absolutely stunning and the views are heaven. We travelled with another family so there was eight of us in total. The villa is a lovely size and has a really good size pool for all eight of us to get in at the same time and plenty of room. It is equipted with everything you will need. Jenny and Phillip are very helpful if you need them. My one problem and the reason I didn't give five stars is the drive up the dirt track from the main road. It is very bendy with sharp bends and very narrow with sheer drops. Thankfully we had a big 9 seater van and my husband and the other driver got used it quite quickly but if you are faint hearted then it's not great. I struggled quite badly (the only one in the group) has I have a fear of heights but I didn't let it spoil my holiday and just stayed in the back on the inside. I think the pool could do with a cover has every morning it was full of insects and the two men had to clear it every day before anyone could get in which was a bit time consuming. Other than these two things I have said it really is the most beautiful villa in a beautiful area of Spain.

“Absolute Peace and Tranquility”
Reviewed 29 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed at this Villa for a week in July. The villa is absolutely perfect if you want a large villa and a reasonable sized swimming pool, well equipped and plenty of room. We were blessed with fantastic weather the whole week as you would expect in Spain in the middle of July. The villa stands on its own with the nearest neighbour about a half mile away.Fantastic views of hills and valleys. The villa has its own olive, lemon and orange trees and the fruit you can pick direct from the tree. Ample size kitchen, outside dining and breakfast table to watch the sun rise if you are up that early. Barbeque and plenty of space around the pool. Now for the drawback, this drive to the villa from the main road is along dirt tracks for about 2.5 - 3 kms with sheer drops and blind curves not for the faint hearted. You need at least a 2.0 litre car or a four wheel drive not the Fiat Punto 998cc that we had.We would definitely return.

Very many thanks for your lovely review. We also love the valley with its seclusion and are thrilled you enjoyed it as well. We look forward to seeing the three generations of your family again. We agree the "country road" is better suited to a larger car but you get used to it very quickly.
