I stayed in a Jungle Lodge in Cuyabena and was instructed to go to Hotel D'Mario to meet my guide at 9am. I took an overnight bus from Banos, which arrived several hours earlier than expected (around 5am), in Lago Agrio. Because I was traveling by myself and had been warned to be particularly careful in Lago Agrio, I decided it would be safest to go to the hotel and wait for my guide there. When I arrived at the hotel, the person watching the door told me I could not come into the hotel and would have to wait for my guide outside. After telling him I had been told to come to this hotel, he told me if I paid him, $10, he would let me come into the hotel to wait on the couch.
You should not have to pay a bribe to enter a hotel! Clearly this was just one employee, but I was disappointed that Hotel D'Mario would allow behavior like this to occur.More
