Owner description: Newlyn Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in Newlyn, Cornwall. Opened in 1895, and financed by John Passmore Edwards the gallery was conceived as a home and exhibition venue for the Newlyn School of Art the works of which are now largely located at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in nearby Penzance. For almost 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. With two venues we are able to offer a wide and varied programme across two sites, showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region. Newlyn has played an important role in supporting the development of 20th-century painting in Britain, and in acknowledgement of that history, our current programme seeks to reflect the ways in which contemporary artists, working in this country and internationally, use painting and drawing to express their ideas. The focus at Newlyn Art Gallery is on painting and drawing. Artists working in other media continue to be a part of the programme on occasions, but two-dimensional work is the clear focus. Recent shows have included major retrospectives by Roger Hilton and Breon O'Casey. At Newlyn Art Gallery, the pavilion on the seaward side of the gallery is a glass structure on ground floor level, which supports a first floor clad in wet-laid Cornish slate, a building method specific to the region, but rarely seen in modern buildings. The glass curtain wall allows panoramic views of Newlyn Green and the sea while sliding doors lead to a secluded garden and outdoor seating area. The Picture Room space shows changing exhibitions of works for sale. With an emphasis on affordable works, it offers the opportunity to buy paintings, prints and drawings by some of the region's most recognised artists. All profits from sales made in The Picture Room directly support the Gallery's education and exhibition activities. The Education Room & Studio Cafe on the first floor of the pavilion has a vast window offering panoramic views across Mounts Bay, as well as a skylight the length of the gabled ceiling. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome. We are a dog-friendly venue.

I was looking forward to visiting this gallery, expecting there to be some acknowledgement of Newlyn's Arts and Crafts history. I was very disappointed to find that there was no sign of it !

I wish we had checked some of the reviews here and not gone on a recommendation from visitors some years back. Lots of white space, little decent art, and staff more interested in the paper or text messages. The upstairs café does have great views over the bay - as does the open space in front of the gallery!

Very good coffee and cake. Interesting gallery of paintings. Lovely view over the harbour and a very helpful and jolly chap serving us.

The gallery was great, something different. You should visit the gallery and it has a great cafe with the most fantastic views.

Expected to see some Newlyn artists here but found that it has been hijacked by the Serota Tendency. The so-called art is nonsense Artboll**ks with huge blank areas of wall. The place feels cold and unloved. The cafe is little better. The person serving displayed some of the worst customer service I've ever seen - he ignored people at the counter and then had a range of excuses as to why he could not serve them or give them what they wanted. He wouldn't last a day in the private sector. Dire. Go to the Penlee in Penzance - it's miles better.
