My boyfriend and I stayed at this beautiful B&B when in town for a wedding. The owners and very friendly and fun to talk to. We were really pleased with the room and facilities. The bed was very comfy and the whole place had the clean country homey feel B&B goers look for. It has everything you'd want in spades and then the perks shine through!
It started with Trixie, the local farmers herding dog who has become one of the family, greeting us in the lane. She's so friendly it's like having your own dog for the weekend.
In the morning we had an amazing breakfast with fresh fruit, homemade granola, various cereals, breads and so many different jams and spreads I couldn't try them all. Everything was laid out for us and ready to go when we came down and Mary Helen brought in some french press coffee with a smile and a joke or two. After our starters we sat for a minute with Ron and chatted about the B&B and the sugar bush while waiting for the hot entrée. We had the traditional eggs and bacon breakfast the first day, all cooked to perfection and then the second day Don whipped up some of his special orange zest french toast with their own maple syrup, served up with ham. Easily the best french toast and syrup I have ever had.
While there Don offered to take us on a tour through the maples and taught us about harvesting sap and how to look for the good trees and what not, then took us up to the sugar shack to explain the whole process.
They aren't messing about when they say it is the authentic Canadian experience. We loved every minute of our stay and will be going back for sure.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review of your stay with us. We really do enjoy being a part of our guests’ authentic Canadian experience. We are exploring the possibility of providing future visitors with an opportunity to make their own maple syrup in the summer! Who knows - you may be able to add this new adventure to your experiences when you next visit us.

In our collection of favourite B&Bs, this one is near the top of the pile! If it's a country setting you're craving, then you can't go wrong! It's located about half way between Ottawa and Algonquin Park, so an ideal location if you're en route to either. Don and Mary Helen are super-friendly, and full of information about the area attractions, including Don's pride and joy, the sugar bush, which is one of the oldest in Renfrew County. In the morning the aromas wafting from the kitchen bring the visitor eagerly to the dining room, where an extensive sumptuous breakfast awaits. Definitely on our "we'll come back here again" list!

Thank you for your review. Don and I certainly enjoy sharing our home and property with guests. We are blessed to have several good vantage points for spotting wildlife from the house. These days wild turkeys are on parade just outside our dining room window.

We’re glad we are on your “we’ll come back again” list!

We travelled to this area of Ontario with one of our siblings and their spouse. The country setting of this B&B is lovely. The country location is very quiet. It’s an extremely neat and very meticulously kept home. The beds were very comfortable. The owners were courteous. The neighbour’s dog is indeed a delight.

We’ve visited many top-notch B&B's across North America, and in Europe, and we all felt somewhat disappointed by a couple of things at this B&B.

We shared the 2 BASEMENT bedrooms. These 2 rooms share a bathroom. We found that there was quite a lack of counter space to lay out our belongings in the bathroom. The bath towels were quite rough in texture.

The Q-bed room is quite smallish and it’s located DIRECTLY UNDER the kitchen. The T-bed room is larger. It's DIRECTLY UNDER the main floor living room.

Our chief complaint was that there was no door at the top of the uncarpeted hardwood staircase that separates the MAIN level from the BASEMENT level. And so, the sound of voices easily funneled down the hard-surfaced staircase into our bedrooms.

We were all weary after travelling for a long time and we wanted to go early to bed (at 9 pm). The hosts had some company in that evening, however, and they visited in their living room, of course. One of the host’s voices was consistently loud for quite a long time into the evening and it easily carried down into the Q-bed room. There are French glass doors at the entrance to the basement's sitting room, but the glass didn’t seem to deflect the sound much.

As well, because the Q-bed room is directly below the kitchen, the quite distinct sounds of footsteps repeatedly going back and forth late that evening (for the company), and early in the morning, too (at 7am) was rather disconcerting. It doesn’t really seem fair to paying guests to have to listen to that kind of "overhead action" when a home is being used for a paying business.

The bedroom with the Q-bed has only a small basement-type window, and so, one cannot look out at all. We missed being able to do that, especially because we were in the country and we wanted to be able to enjoy that sort of view by day, and by night. Nor could one look out from the adjoining sitting room … no windows in there at all. The larger T-bed room does have a nice window.

We would recommend to any other guests to make certain that that there wouldn’t be any other adults or teen guest(s) in the 2nd basement room. Having one's own young children in the 2nd room would probably be OK.

This is because the adjoining sitting room (with a TV) is shared by both of those basement rooms. The Q-bed room is RIGHT BESIDE that sitting room and there is a large doorway. But, no actual door separates those 2 rooms! We saw a LOW folding screen lying against the wall that probably could be manually be placed across at least part of the doorway opening. The set-up would have definitely benefited from a sliding, pocket-type door!

And so, even if parents were travelling with their own teenagers, it might prove unpleasant if the parents wanted to go to sleep in the Q-bed room and their teens wanted to stay up later than the parents to watch TV.

Unlike many B&B's that we‘ve visited, no beverage was offered on arrival or at any other time, except at breakfast. That’s not an imperative, of course, but it’s always a nice touch to offer guests when they arrive. The hosts did not readily offer much information on local attractions to us, and as is common in many other B&B’s, we saw no informational pamphlets laid out for our perusal.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms would probably offer a lot of pluses.

We are responding to your recent review of our B & B.

Noise Level
We acknowledge your main concern about the “overhead action” and noise levels and are taking action to correct this situation. We completed the lower level area three years ago and put in soundproof insulation in the ceilings. We will ensure that main floor activities are curtailed after 10 p.m. Nine o’clock at night is a bit early to shut down normal B & B activities. Kitchen use will cease by 9 p m when guests are in the downstairs queen room. We do understand that a good night’s sleep is important.

As to your other comments …

"The Q room is small".
The sitting area and the queen room (Q room) are one room whose dimensions are 21 feet by 12.5 feet. The twin room is 14 feet by 12 feet.
The Q room may appear small when the sitting area is shared with family members in the other room. The Q room and T room are rented as a suite only to family or a group travelling together. Both rooms then share the sitting area as they wish. We assumed you would work out the use of the sitting area among yourselves.

"Bathroom Vanity is Small".
The bathroom vanity is 37 inches wide – a standard bathroom size. Guests sharing a bathroom are expected to clear the vanity after each use

"Rough Towels"
Our towels are line dried for freshness. Additionally, we do not use commercially perfumed fabric softener for both allergy and environmental reasons. Most guests appreciate our fragrance free policy.

"Welcome Beverage Upon Arrival"
We usually offer tea/coffee and a snack upon arrival. We apologize for this oversight on our part.

"Information on Local Attractions and Events"
Materials about local attractions and events, in addition to being available on most of our various listing services, are located on the shelving of the television consul on each floor of the B & B.

We too are disappointed – that your concerns were posted anonymously and not addressed to us in person where we might have resolved your concerns favourably when you were here. We also feel that your comments on an area of the house which you did not see are inappropriate even though they were somewhat complimentary.

In short, we view a number of your complaints as excessive and unwarranted.

For fourteen years we have enjoyed B & B guests from all over the world . Our reputation is very important to us.

Very good b&b located in a sugar maple farm just outside highway 60, about 45 minutes east to Algonquin provisional park.
Very nice bedroom and bathroom, generous breakfast. The hosts Don and Mary Helen are very nice and informative. In a b&b in the country you can real get a touch of Canada. Highly recommended.
Don't miss Don's guided forest tour!
