“We had a good time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2007

Our flight was delayed for 5hours, we arrived late. The key broke as I opened the door. My wife's suitcase went missing on the plane. So very bad first night. The suitcase turned up the next morning - then we could relax.

Beach is absolutely great, and Habib is the only guy to speak to if you want to organise tours. After a few days you start to feel isolated, even on busy kendwa beach. It is expensive and tricky to move around the island. I would have liked to explore more.

The hotel itself? Satisfactory. Clean. Rooms are not five star, but they have aircon - which you need here. Bedlinen a bit cheap - not very comfortable sleeping as the week progressed.

Breakfast - very basic. omelette every morning, with some french toast and fruit. there are a few restaurants to choose from. Food is ok, and not overpriced. Having recently visited Mozambique I was a bit dissapointed by the overall quality of the seafood (Moz is so much better!).

People are friendly, language can be a problem.

Beach is AMAZING! Snorkelling was worth the $20US per person, and it included lunch on the beach. Stonetown is also amazing to see, beautiful buildings... the spice tour was cool - I think we have hotter spices down here in south africa though.

Overall I am glad we went. Zanzibar has an amazing vibe, beautiful beaches, amazing history. All of the resorts are very much isolated from the islanders, and this is sad. I would not go back, but I am glad I that I got to experience it.

Kendwa is satisfactory, the gardens are beautiful, and they are building a new swimming pool. Staff were extremely helpful the entire time, management as well. If you expect 5star luxury, you will be extremely dissapointed. If you expect decent, clean and basic accomodation, this is the one for you.

  • Liked — the beach! Great views and beautiful gardens.
  • Disliked — Limited choice in terms of going out at night.

Overall, our stay at Kendwa Amaan Beach Resort was very disappointing.

Firstly, upon arrival the management infuriated us; we were told our rooms would be $60USD per night however in order to pay in the currency of the country - Tanzanian Shilling, the hotel use their own exchange rate which is very favourable for them, and not so favourable for the customer. I would like to say that we were not exchanging currency, if we were, it could be expected that the hotel charge a commission or less attractive rate of exchange. Although ultimately, $1USD is NOT 1,400TZS.

As a member of the management team was present when we checked in, we voiced our opinion, in a very rational manner and it quickly became apparent that he couldn't care less.

Secondly, we chose to eat at the beach front restaurant - the Taj Mahal (previously The Titanic bar) on our first evening and after a delicious meal, the bill arrived with an array of various miscellaneous charges. Plus this, plus that, minus this, plus that....

As we couldn't make any sense of what was in front of us, we asked the waiter. He told us that the various additions were 10%taxes in order for a tarmac road to be made outside the hotel and this only applied to drinks. However the amount was more than 10% of the drinks, so we asked to speak to the manager. (Keeping up?!)...

The manager said that actually it wasn't a tax, it was a service charge and our waiter would receive 100% of that money as a tip. (this was however after much changing of the story, one minute it was a tax the next it was something else before finally settling on it being a service charge.)

This is clearly a shameless way of supplementing the hotel income in the hope that customers either don't notice, or can't be bothered to question it.

We are not new to travelling, nor are we difficult to please, in fact on holiday we allow very few things to irritate us, but we felt that Kendwa Amaan Beach Resort operates a particularly dishonest business. The staff we found were great and mentioned that we were not the first people to question the taxes and weird charges.

Interestingly, on our last day, the menus changed, to incorporate the 'tax' into the cost and service is not included...

first of all: we are experienced travellers, and we are usually on a budget, so we don't expect luxury nor 5 stars service but... Kendwa Beach Resort is not even 1 star! we paid 90 usd for a garden view room: it looked very old and poorly maintained and not decorated, with a really old bathroom.. but it was close to the beach and we though it could be ok... well.. we were sooo wrong!
after checking in, we found out that the sink in the toilet was broken, water coming out from behind and pieces falling apart... we informed the reception 3 or 4 times (early and late afternoon, before dinner, after dinner etc..), they promised it would be repaired but nothing! the room was also not particularly clean!
the next morning we told them again: they moved us to another room... ok... pack everything again, wait half an hour for the guy with the key for our new room, and here we are!
when we got back after the sunset, the main light in the room was not working (we couldnt see it before, cause there's no electricity during the day): walk up to the reception (no phones), they send a guy to fix it... then 2 more guys came... but after 1 hour.. no results yet! it took them 1,5 hours to fix a light!
when we informed the manager about our disappointment, he didnt care at all! we werenìt even offered a drink while waiting at the reception for the light to be fixed... When we told the manager we were thinking about moving to another place next door (which we eventually did: we went to La Rosa dei Venti... cheaper, cleaner but most of all nicer management!), he just said "ok, Im sorry"... Not really what you would expect from a "3 stars resort"!
oh, just one last thing: don't try espresso coffee at the beach bar/restaurant.. 4400 shillings for the worst espresso ever! we tried it cause we thought it was included in our breakfast, but unfortunately it wasnt (and of course nobody informed us of this), and they followed us to our room and knocked at our door to ask for payment.. stange methods?
so... Go to Kendwa, the nicest beach ever, but DON'T stay at Amaan Kendwa Beach Resort! It's by far the worst and most poorly managed hotel on that beautiful beach!

  • Liked — The beach.. but there are other, better hotels on the same beach!
  • Disliked — Everything: rooms, employees, management!
