“A brilliant birthday break”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

My wife and I have just spent four nights in "the wheelwrights", one of the two self catering cottages at the Old Forge. We loved everything about it and had a brilliant time. Lucy and Tim are wonderful hosts and they both are natural at it! We just could not fault anything!

I chose the Smithy as a Birthday getaway for my Girlfriend. We both love classic cars so took our 1966 Volvo Amazon with us, the surroundings were perfect. On arrival late on Thursday we were met with a warm welcome and an even warmer roaring fire. The first evening was made all the better with the home made flapjacks left for us. We needed a relaxing break after working flat out without stop for far too long and this was the perfect answer. I can't fault a thing except out time there just didn't seem long enough, 3 nights and I wanted to stay another 3. All of the other guests in the B&B, caravan and Shepherds hut were as in love with the place as we were.
The chickens, donkey, cars, vintage enamels, pumps all made it feel a very special place but nothing could beat being woken by a tawney owl sitting outside of our window twit-twooing early on Saturday morning.
We are booking for spring again and i think this won't be our last stay.
The pictures used don't do the Smithy justice and I didn't get a better picture of the interior but it's comfy, cosy, has an unusual "quirky" layout.

Room Tip: The Smithy is perfect..just perfect

This was an amazing place to spend our first anniversary! We loved everything about it. Our hosts were very accommodating, the surrounding countryside is beautiful, the chickens/horse/donkey add to the rustic charm and the breakfast was as wonderful as previous reviews state. However, the real star is Sam the Shepherds Hut itself. We loved the decor, the games, the candle light, the stove, the comfy bed and our picnic/BBQ area. The other facilities such as the tuck shop and the private loo and shower made for a very comfortable stay. My husband also loved the vintage car garage and all the retro memorabilia around the Old Forge. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a very romantic holiday!

My Husband surprised me with a trip to stay in the Shepherd's Hut, Sam at the Old Forge for our first wedding anniversary and it was just perfect!

Sam was delightful, a perfectly kitted out, extremely comfortable and cosy little hut surrounded by amazing views, Scrumpy Jack the Donkey and a herd of chickens who followed us everywhere, even into the compost loo! Tim and Lucy the owners have created a fantastic escape from the stresses of everyday life, they really are living the good life. We've come away with hundreds of ideas of how to make our own home more interesting.

Such a refreshing change to stay somewhere so full character with such amazing people. I feel like I've come back from a month's holiday, not just a weekend away!

I find it hard to write this review as I spent last weekend in the Green Room (which is in the main house) and I didn't really want to tell anyone about it purely because it was so fantastic. Both Tim and Lucy have an incredibly special way with both their guests and local community which is a rarity nowadays in good 'ol England. Every morning you are greeted with a warm smile, fresh roast coffee and pressed apple juice (and I saw them pressing the apples myself with a home made contraption which Tim made in his garage!) a breakfast to die for - dropped scones, bacon and Dorset honey was my favourite. After breakfast there are always plenty of cuddles to be had with the dogs, horse and Scrumpy Jack the donkey xxxx. I loved every minute of it, not just for the fact that Lucy and Tim have such an excellent eye for detail and are true Wombles but because I felt so welcome in this truly special and loved family home/holiday hideaway. It was a truly refreshing experience and I hope it stays just the way it is. Thank you Lucy and Tim xxxxxxxx

Room Tip: All the rooms are fabulous (the Green Room has an en-suite), I definitely want to try out the carava...

My husband and I stayed in Rosie the Gypsy Caravan over the bank holiday weekend. We had a fantastic time. The caravan was compact, cosy and beautifully restored. It was lovely. We had sweeping views of the countryside form our caravan, and a family of chickens, Scrumpy Jack the donkey and a horse for neighbours! They were adorable. A very peaceful setting and a relief when you want to get away from the stresses of city life.

Lots of nice pubs around. You definitely need to book ahead if you plan to eat in one of them, as we were turned away from 3 before finally finding somewhere to have dinner on a Saturday night.

The owners Tim and Lucy were lovely too. Friendly and hospitable, and on hand if you needed any local information. Tim PLEASE do build that BBQ area that you talked about! Breakfast was made from locally sourced ingredients and was delicious.

Can’t wait to try out the Shepherds hut next time!
