“Nice little tucked away piece of tranquility”
Reviewed 10 July 2011

Me and my husband stayed here for 2 nights as our friends were getting married and holding their reception at the Kilnwick Percy Golf resort oppersite the Wolds...a mere 2 min walk away.

The surroundings are beautiful and serene. The staff were very pleasent and whilst there was no TV in the room which was beautiful and clean we didnt miss it. The breakfast was veggi only but again this was ok.

Would stay again if in the area.

Very fine accommodation if you're cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington on the Way of the Roses route. The Retreat is a converted mansion in a peaceful setting, surrounded by well-kept gardens. The rooms are spotlessly clean, there's good hot water and a very nice vegetarian breakfast. The Buddhists who run it are friendly and professional and there's no hassle. The only downside is that evening meals are not available, so it's a mile's cycle ride back to Pocklington to eat, unless the golf club across the road can offer you something (not available when I was there).

The b&b rooms are modern, clean, attractively furnished with kettle, tea, coffee, and toiletries - ie like a 4* hotel - but here you have the personal touch too. Your hosts are friendly and keen to make your stay enjoyable. The quality of food for breakfast and in the World cafe is excellent. The main house retains some touches from its grander days and is now a Buddhist Centre. The grounds with the lake and woodland are beautiful and peaceful. The woods were alive with birdsong and the pheasants strutted around the pasture. Great walks along the Wolds Way too to get an appetite for enjoying lunch in the World cafe.

2 night stay so that we could visit York. The room was small but perfect. The breakfasts were excellent and there was plenty of it. Location beautiful. We would happily return. We struggled to find decent eating places nearby for evening meals so check out trip advisor first. There's a lovely cafe within the grounds but it's not open every day.

What a gem. My friend and I stayed here for 5 days and were given rooms next to each other as requested . It was a such a tranquil sanctuary away from the usual busy working week but close to amenities.
The room was modern, clean and warm. The ensuite bathroom is modern with toiletries and plenty of towels supplied The furniture in the room is a good quality pine with a very comfortable bed and plenty of pillows and cushions.
There is a kettle with tea, coffee and chocolate supplied.A radio is supplied but no television. I thought I would miss the televisio but it was not so. The surroudings are so beautiful and peaceful it encourages you to take advantage of them and walk around the grounds or just listen to the bird song.
There is free wi fi if you want to take your laptop though.
The breakfast choice was very good though vegetarian. However I did not feel I had missed out in any wayon the usual breakfast fayre and the standard was very high and plentiful.
We are not Buddhists but did attend a 1 day course at the large Georgian house in B&B grounds and met some lovely people. The atmosphere in the main house was very calming. Also in the grounds is a coffee shop selling home made fayre and a small shop in the main house selling a small variety of goods. In addition an old church and lake are close to the B&B and house. The grounds and are picturesque to walk around and feel very safe.
You are close to Pocklington so can shop there or visit the local tourist attractions. We went to York and the Eden Camp in Molton which in itself was a full day out really interesting for all ages and very good value.
Sorry this review is delayed but I feel this is a wonderful little gem of a place that should be shared with others.
We will not hesitate in returning hereat least yearly and more if possible.

We were unsure of what to expect from our stay as the b and b is ran by buddhists and is sold as a retreat however, we were thrilled when we arrived. the rooms were clean and nicely decorated, quite small but had everything we needed.
The service was fantastic and plenty of credit to the girl who runs the place single handedly for her fantatic breakfast and kind words.
I m not a good sleeper but had an amazing couple of nights here, i think due to the quiet location and the peaceful atmosphere around the place.
Thank you for a nice stay.
