If you're looking for a place to stay near York, waste no more time - just book this wonderful place. On the outskirts of York, and set in simply gorgeous and very extensive grounds, this bed and breakfast accommodation is located in an annexe off the main building, a most impressive house. I stayed with my daughter and we each had a single room and shared the bathroom which was for our use only. The double rooms all have their own en-suite bathrooms. The whole place was spotlessly clean and exceptionally comfortable. Everything you needed was provided - good toiletries, local information, etc. Run by a group of Buddhists, the peace and tranquility pervaded everywhere, and I had the best two nights sleep I've had in a long time. All the staff we met were very friendly and courteous. Our vegetarian breakfast was cooked to order and was simply delicious. I couldn't believe you could get such a high standard of accommodation for £30 a night inclusive of breakfast. I highly recommend this wonderful establishment, and I will certainly return.

Me and my husband stayed here for 2 nights as our friends were getting married and holding their reception at the Kilnwick Percy Golf resort oppersite the Wolds...a mere 2 min walk away.

The surroundings are beautiful and serene. The staff were very pleasent and whilst there was no TV in the room which was beautiful and clean we didnt miss it. The breakfast was veggi only but again this was ok.

Would stay again if in the area.

Very fine accommodation if you're cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington on the Way of the Roses route. The Retreat is a converted mansion in a peaceful setting, surrounded by well-kept gardens. The rooms are spotlessly clean, there's good hot water and a very nice vegetarian breakfast. The Buddhists who run it are friendly and professional and there's no hassle. The only downside is that evening meals are not available, so it's a mile's cycle ride back to Pocklington to eat, unless the golf club across the road can offer you something (not available when I was there).

The b&b rooms are modern, clean, attractively furnished with kettle, tea, coffee, and toiletries - ie like a 4* hotel - but here you have the personal touch too. Your hosts are friendly and keen to make your stay enjoyable. The quality of food for breakfast and in the World cafe is excellent. The main house retains some touches from its grander days and is now a Buddhist Centre. The grounds with the lake and woodland are beautiful and peaceful. The woods were alive with birdsong and the pheasants strutted around the pasture. Great walks along the Wolds Way too to get an appetite for enjoying lunch in the World cafe.

2 night stay so that we could visit York. The room was small but perfect. The breakfasts were excellent and there was plenty of it. Location beautiful. We would happily return. We struggled to find decent eating places nearby for evening meals so check out trip advisor first. There's a lovely cafe within the grounds but it's not open every day.
