“NOT a boutique hotel - more a hotel that's about to close!”
Reviewed 15 December 2009

Rubbish. Turned up and had to find someone to check me in. No restaurant - it closed 2 months ago as no-one patronised it. Dull rooms - no sings of luxury. Raid the larder utterly useless. Embarassing hotel.

I had the misfortune of staying in 'Southend's only boutique hotel' for 2 nights on business this week. My colleague and I are both used to staying in nice hotels and were keen to avoid the blandness of TravelLodge etc and opted to stay at Maison Renouf after being seduced by their promises of a style and service that made it stand out from other local hotels. It certainly did stand out..... but for all the wrong reasons!

1) The rooms are horrific. A few spalshes of colour have been added to the walls but this does not make up for the peach/avocado bathroom suites which have clearly not been updates in at least 20 years!!

2) I asked for a quiet room but this seems to be difficult to achieve as the hotel is surrounded by busy roads. I asked to be moved to a quieter room and was moved , but my new room had no hot water. When I complained in the morning, the 'can do attitude of the staff' was not apparent as I was told I had been moved into a more expensive room and would therefore be charged more moneyy - even although my water had been ice cold!! I was told I would need to move into yet another room as some poor unsuspecting soul was being moved into my room, even although they knew the water was cold!

3) The decor is simply horrid - note to the manager at Renouf - a few cheapo barroque style mirrors and some orchids in reception do not a boutique hotel make!! Most hilariously of all, the Maison part of the logo is a straight copy of the Malmaison logo - but with the Mal part of the logo chopped off!!! It really does have to be seen to be believed.
Stay at the hotel at your peril - you have been warned!!

I stay at this hotel frequently and it's always excellent. The staff is always very accomodating, nice selection for breakfast, clean facility. If you're a business traveller wanting a great place to stay, you can't beat staying here. I love the double duvets, Raid the Larder is incredible (not your usual stick of Nescafe), Free WiFi, Free parking. Common areas air conditioned.
Highly recommended.

Overall impression - grey/beige. And the artwork looks like Jack the Ripper met a graffiti artist.

Stayed here just the one night, which was more than enough. Check in was fine, with a friendly lady who explained they weren't associated with the Mal Maison - though the logo looks suspiciously similar.

Had paid for an executive double - when I pay for a double, I don't generally expect 2 single duvets, though at least it meant I didn't have to fight for it in the middle of the night. It may have been refurbished in the last few years, but the bathroom fittings looked at least 10 years old. They were clean though.

For this kind of money, air conditioning of some sort would be nice, because the moment you open the windows, you have the joys of Essex's finest boy racers tearing up and down on the road outside. Aircraft noise I expect to hear - it's at the end of the runway, and mostly just small Pipers & Cessnas.

We were told that the Brasserie was closed, which wasn't a problem as we were visiting rellies. It also meant that there was no hot breakfast next morning - just cold meats, cheese and pastries. Very little atmosphere in the breakfast room - more grey/beige, laminate floor and scuffed furniture.

Raid the Larder? Didn't find out about this until filling out the questionnaire next morning - looks like a cost saving - no need for individual kettles in each room, when you can have one in the corridor!

I could go on, but I think you get the idea...

This hotel was amazing. My 3rd visit to Maison Renouf. The decor, utlities and staff are all spot on. The food is uncomplicated and nicely presented. Free WiFi. Loved the Raid the Larder. Highly recommended!

For £100 this was a rip off. The room was average and lacked basic information you would expect, 'raid the larder' is no more than tea, coffee and package muffins, the TV kept flicking back to the menu and there was no remote, the staff were not friendly, the bathroom was a complete mismatch, the breakfast was poor. If it was half the price you wouldn't have any complaints, but for £100 you would expect a lot more.
