I stayed here with my partner for one night as we went to a wedding reception nearby. The room was quite basic though clean and in good condition. The rooms are separate from the pub out the back, which was fine for us because it meant we could come in late without feeling we were disturbing anyone. There is a window in the front door to the room which lets the morning light in and could do with a little curtain!

The staff were welcoming and friendly, and accomodated our request for a late breakfast. The breakfast was nice. This is a fine place to stay though not particularly atmospheric or special and I feel it is maybe a little bit basic for the price.

I understand that the restaurant has just re-opened, and I sincerely wish them well with their new venture, but for us (a party of 4) it all seemed to go very wrong from the moment we sat down to order our bottle of red wine to be told that the one we wanted wasn't available.

Ok, so we can forgive them for running out of a particular wine. Next we looked at the menu and one of our group asked for the tempura prawns as a starter.....sorry, we should have been told when we sat down that they weren't available. This was a Friday night, which the restaurant claims is Friday fish night.....

We opted for a selection of warm breads as an appetiser. This was a generous portion served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, yet the breads were not warm, they were cold and bland. Our waitress took them away and heated them up for us, which I think meant putting under the hot plate for a few minutes as the bread then became dry and almost toast. We were not provided with small side plates either, so we had to eat the bread and make a mess on the table.

Moving on, we asked what was on the specials board....the poor waitress didn't know. So off she went to look at the board. The list of specials is not anywhere to be seen in the restaurant, instead it is on a board in the bar. This list consisted of fish dishes only, so the restaurant is clearly trying to define itself as a fish specialty restaurant. My boyfriend ordered the roasted cod with mussel sauce, served with new potatoes. It sounded nice, yet when this arrived it was the smallest thinnest tail end of cod with about 6 new potatoes, a handful of mussels in their shells and mouthfuls of bone with every piece of cod. So poor, indeed, that my boyfriend decided to abandon his meal and go and speak to the chef.

I had ordered a chicken Caesar salad. I did not fancy many of the things on the menu, so thought I would be safe with this, but sadly when this arrived, there was plenty of lettuce and about 25 olives. There was a slab of chicken, flavourless and plonked on top of the lettuce. There was not a Caesar dressing, instead it looked like spoonfuls of Mayo mingled in with the lettuce leaves. It was dire, absolutely abysmal and when the waitress asked if everything was ok, I informed her it was dreadful.

Quite a few of the dishes are not served with vegetables or potatoes and these have to be purchased separately.

We were asked if we wanted desserts, we declined as at £6.50 per dessert, I really do not think this offered value for money.

It was a very noisy Friday night with a large group on the middle table. The conservatory is very echoey, which as a result made the chatter from other tables seem extremely loud which meant at times it was difficult to hear our own conversations across the table.

To the chef and restaurant staff's credit, we were not charged for the 2 main courses and they did apologise offering to cook anything else as an alternative. We thanked them but declined,

Perhaps we caught them on an 'off day' but we will not be returning to see if this was the case.

Well after a long awaited re opening we visited the cherry tree for dinner + drinks and we were disappointed.
The menu is short and they managed to get things wrong which could be forgiven due to teething problems, but on the pricing I think its overpriced when you have to pay extra for veg & chips.
I had the skate at £14.50 which is a fair price one would think for a pub but that does not come with anything ! So another £3.75 for chips and your meal is getting expensive...check out their menu and decide for yourself.
For me its a nice local pub but not somewhere we would be eating to often as there are many other places that offer much better value for money.

We had a lovely meal at The Cherry Tree last night. The meals were lovely. The chicken was a large portion and was excellent. The fish and chips was massive! Nice friendly people make such a difference to the evening out, and the lady who served us was lovely. A very welcoming atmosphere with everything just right.

Well done! We'll be back!!

Stayed at the Cherry Tree for one night with my GF for the southend on sea half marathon. There were four rooms in an out building at the back of the pub which was closed due to a fire at the beginning of the year.

The room was well presented with the usual ikea type decorations. Some of the room could do with a bit of a spruce up. Painting coming off, the radiator in the bathroom had exposed wires etc. The carpet had stains all over.

The bed was a spring bed which you could feel whilst sitting/sleeping. It wasn't the most comfortable of beds or pillows. It was also very hot in the room. A fan would be useful?

I found it a bit weird there was no information about anything. No information about pub apart from a menu for the restaurant which had been closed for months? Why? How about some information such as check out time/local information/ where to go?

There were quite a few bugs around. We even had a cockroach run out from beneath the bed which was pleasant (I squashed it). The hotel/pub is in the countryside though : / which I assume may be an acceptable excuse for the large amount of bugs?

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was offered in the morning and we could order what we wanted. No beans though which was annoying but there was enough choice.

I am being picky but the cockroach and bed ruined it for me. Overall an ok night, would recommend for a quick one night stay (its in the middle of no where so you cant walk anywhere) £75.00 for the night was a little high.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same.

Yesterday we held my mum’s 90th birthday party for 50 people at ‘The Cherry Tree’. My mum chose it because of its lovely light and bright conservatory. Most of the guests were over 70 and it was a cold January day so we were delighted that the conservatory’s heating had been put on ready for us and was lovely and warm. The tables and chairs were all laid out as requested. The food was cooked to order and even though we asked for it to be brought out a little early, they willingly obliged. The food was absolutely delicious, all handmade and just the sort of thing our guests liked: both hot and cold food, scampi, chips, cheese, ham and mustard sandwiches, crisps, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, etc etc. I had been told they never run out of food and that is quite true! People had plenty but there was still some left over and they offered to provide more. But what really made the event was the staff. I cannot thank Matt, Mark and Alex enough for their help. They were all so friendly and actively wanted to make sure everything went well and you know, that makes all the difference. Nothing was too much. They found string and fishing wire to help us display some decorations, they helped pump up a extra large balloon when it looked like the balloon had broken, they lit the firework fountains on the cake and made sure that we were happy where they placed them, they kept an eye on the tab so I knew what had been spent, they cleared up with no fuss and had endless patience while everyone got in their way, they got my ipod to work so we had music. If you can’t find Ray Mears, then Matt is the person who will help you survive because his lateral brain will get you out of any scrape. Mark was charm personified, friendly, smiley and with a quiet authority. If you are thinking of organising an anniversary do, a christening, a wedding or even a wake try The Cherry Tree. I will. Thank you all you lovely people. You helped make my mum’s day!

We have eaten here several times now and though it time we give praise where due. Food and service is always very good. We are both foodies having worked in the hospitality and catering industry so easily recognise when a place has got it right.

Great work
