I stayed at the Surf Colony with my family and we had a wonderful time. Service was inconsistent. Water and electricity were occasionally not available. This was in May 2013-so maybe they worked out some of the issues. Food was OK--drinks were good. Pool was not heated but hot tubs were wonderful. We still had a lot of fun though--right on the Pacific Ocean--can't beat that view and the sound of the surf.

We had a voucher for this resort, waited a long time to use it, wound up being there during a very hot spell. I wilt in hot weather; nevertheless, we had an enjoyable time. Staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant varied from OK to good. Better to eat in town unless you just don't want to leave the complex. (We were in #18, a two-story, two-bedroom unit on the beach.)

The kitchen was supplied with pots, pans, microwave, toaster, dishes, etc.--but no dish towels or pot holders.

There is no AC, but the downstairs room (living room and kitchen) and both upstairs bedrooms have electric fans. This is fine--except when the electricity goes out. Then you have no fans, no lights, no water. Most strangely (and the reason for the title of this review) is that the windows don't open in the upstairs back bedroom or in the three bathrooms (and the bathrooms don't have any kind of fans or vents either). There's no way to get fresh air into the back bedroom (or any of the bathrooms) if you want the door closed. I've never seen such "sealed" construction in this kind of climate. Fortunately, we were all OK with opening the balcony doors and leaving our bedroom doors open to get air flow.

Also, the one-story, one-bedroom villas in the back row aren't offset, so they have no view of the ocean, only of the backs of the villas in front of them. Again, architect?

Nevertheless--a good time was had by all, and I have no complaints about management or staff.

(We did have to tell the bartender at the Hacienda Hotel at the end of the beach how to make a gin and tonic, though.)

If I knew how to give a half rating, I'd have labeled this 3.5, not 4.

Room Tip: Get a beachfront unit.

I'm not going to bother posting pictures as they would just be the same thing everyone else has on here. I'm also going to break tradition from my other reviews and list just pros and cons as it's the easiest way to describe.

PROS
Beautiful scenery, right on the beach (if you have a beachfront unit, which I highly recommend)
Great staff, very friendly and helpful to the extent of what they have to work with.
Nice grounds, well cared for.
Big pool, warm water. Lots of big beds to lounge around.

CONS
No screen door on our unit 9, and you have to leave the door open as there is no air conditioning in any unit. Consequently we got eaten alive by mosquitoes
Faucet in bathroom barely shot water toward the sink, but instead toward the backsplash.
Unit close to pool (unit 9) can be very noisy at night making it even harder to sleep
Cockroaches (nothing more needs to be said)
Sheets and Towels are old and many have holes or tattered.
Food and drinks at bar are expensive, even by US standards. ($12 burger)

All in all, if you're looking for a rustic place to stay and commune with the ocean this is great. Just keep in mind, it is rustic, not kept up particularly well and services are very limited. Bring lots of bug spray and you should be ok. Overhead fans help in the evening but you still have to leave the place open.

Room Tip: Stay on the beach side row, but get as far from the pool as possible unless you plan to be up late.

We have taken advantage of Groupon twice on week long stays here. Both times we planned on having our stay coincide with Peter Buck's January Rock Festival. From have a thatched cottage right on the beach, to happy hour at the Hacienda, to spectacular sunrises and sunsets, to lounging at the beautiful pool bar, to Baja Beans wonderful courtyard experience five minutes away, to all the wonderful places to eat in Pescadera and Todo Santos,to all the galleries and shops in town. Or just hanging out in a seemingly remote stretch of the coast and doing nothing it is a perfect holiday experience. Except for one thing noisy neighbors who apparently crowded in extra friends and were set on partying all night and no staff to do anything about it. Kind of makes you feel helpless out there aside from taking matters in your own hands. After that was resolved only a weak apology by staff and no comps were offered.

Room Tip: Number nine right by the pool

A bit out of the way but easy to find, the Surf Colony gives you easy access to the surf. We stayed in a two bedroom unit, #16. Be advised that the two bedroom units will only sleep 4 people. There were five of us and one person had to sleep on an uncomfortable couch. I did ask at the office is they had extra beds and was told that it would cost an additional $50 per night. That seemed excessive.

The kitchen was sparsely equipped but we weren't preparing meals during our stay so it didn't present a big problem for our group. The unit does not have air conditioning and if you are sleeping in the smaller of the two bedrooms, it is very hot and stuffy. The largest bedroom has a balcony with a sliding glass door that you can leave open which helps cool that room down. Friends who were staying in a one bedroom unit but not on the beach, complained that there room was also stuffy with no air circulation. Although there are ceiling fans. The master bath was very spacious. Minimal amenities in the bathrooms. We had to ask several times for beach towels and an extra pillow. Before we checked out, we had to turn the beach towels into the office before we could sign out.

The pool was very nice as was the beach side lounge area. We ate one breakfast at the pool side restaurant and the food was good and the prices reasonable.

Over all it was an OK experience and not a good value. If you are looking for luxury, this is not your place. If you are looking for an on the beach experience and don't mind the heat, this is for you. Also, the people staying the in smaller bedroom of our unit had bed bug bites. Not good!

Room Tip: Ask for a unit on the beach and avoid the units a row back behind the other units. Otherwise you get zero ocean view and no breeze so you can cool down at night.
